For me the 90 is so the muffle is under the cowl, and not sticking out the side, which would put too many holes in the cowl for my liking. Right now I am flying without the cowl, so have some time to decide since I want the engine broken in fully before I cowl it.

I used the Saito 12mm 90° adaptor & the stock "tomato can" muffler on my (inverted) FA-91S to have the exhaust exit the cowl bottom center just ahead of the firewall. That combo works very well to keep a neat cowl installation W/O any extra holes.

I think you're on the right track.

Old Fart no on the ceramics, my partner in crime is on a road trip up north. However I will endeavour to get the data if you want to play your self. As a side line, I have a Goldberg Shoestring which requires a "racing OS 35 and 8 servos" It has ailerons, rudder throttle and elevator. I am considering a 40 fourstroke or maybe a G500 with a tigre paw muffler. Your thoughts.

I believe my kit said 29 to 35 (2 cycle) for engine size.
If you could come up with a Saito .56 in good shape it would be just about perfect with an 11x6 APC. I think the .82 would be overkill.

The 56 with a 12x7 is a lot of engine. An 11 may too little prop for a 56.

Barry saito say 11x7 to 13x6 for the 56,hows the ragtop on the honda s2000,still fending off the cats?

Huk if you run an 82 in your you can do with a 14x4 wide blade you could hover it all day,the deccy will do that with a 14x5 but i prefer the 14x6 apc as most of my flying is low level aero's and touch and goes specially cross wind it is good practice. The deccy has very good acceleration and you need it to practice downwind touch and goes. It's not my favourite aeroplane but it's the one i fly most and the large hole in the cowl makes it easy to get on with if you fly it a lot.My favourite aeroplane is the h9 taylorcraft with the saito 182 twin fitted and it's great for scale aerobatics and very similar to fly like the deccy with 82 which is why i fly the deccy so much.I have to say the taylorcraft is a bit more forgiving and it sounds nicer.

Skypup best wishes on that trip down memory lane friend.

Trev i'll wait re the ceramics but i do have an engine in mind.I hear the goldberg shoestring kit is quite rare nowadays so i would probably build it and hang it from the ceiling with a nice gk saito in it.

My favorite prop on a .56 is a Graupner 12x6 and a 12x7 or a Bolly 13.5x6 on the .62. I found some .56 numbers on a CD.

Old Fart, my local kit cutter (Wolf Models) will get the job of duplicating the Shoestrings bit cause I intend to race it. I know this is off topic but think about this one of our local gas turbine jet jovkeys got his nose out of joint by being done like a dinner in the circuit by and electric ducted fan. Boy did it go, but didn't sound as good as a Saito. He later totalled a P47 with a big Moki up the front. Day good no wind off to the field (I hope)

Hey all,
Looking for a little comparison or opinion concerning the Saito inline twins. How they fare up with similar size singles - 91, 180\220 - or other twins, say - 91, 182.
Many Thanx

I have an FA-200Ti converted to CDI/glow fuel. It is comparable to an FA-180 CDI conversion as far as power output. 7850 RPM W/an 18x8 propeller.

I would suspect that the smaller FA-100Ti would be comparable to an FA-91S.

Be forewarned, they desperately need dual carbs as they run horribly unbalanced as far as A/F ratios. One cylinder runs slobbering rich when you adjust the needle for best average mixture I can't remember which cylinder ran rich.

While I didn't see the usual 200-300 RPM improvement in WOT performance from the CDI conversion, I saw a 70% improvement in fuel economy.

On GI (glow ignition) it drank 12oz of 15% nitro glow fuel in a little over 7 minutes @ WOT. On CDI it took it just a few second over 12 minutes to drain the same amount if fuel.

Overall I like the engine & when converted to CDI W/glow fuel, they are pretty economical on fuel for the amount of power it puts out.

Very smooth too & since it has a 30° offset crank, it is an even firing twin (360° firing order) & is very easy to convert to spark ignition.

Hope you had a good day flying trev did you warm the fa65 up? re circuit collisions that's what i'd call bad luck at best mate

T man i don't have an inline twin but have watched a 220ti fly in a nice mustang and they sure sound good, plenty of get up and go,bit more than my 182 twin at a guess.

Sr if it was you who posted a vid of a friend while back with a 200ti being flown in a skyraider? can't remember but whoever was flying it really knew his stuff,it's worth watching the vid just for that.T man the engine sounds just beautiful.Sr can you post a link for t man ? that would be awesome. Now if i've got all that wrong i'll just shuffle out to the shed and start finding some saito spare parts i now seem to have

Man Sammy, I sure would not want your job. I was club pres in San Diego one year. It was a pain,
I just want to build and fly, and help with maintenance. And oh; eat food

OF, sadly I had to sell that beautiful .56, that spinner came from an El Cheapo $99.00 ARF in which the rods were all too short, the wood too soft, the covering barely stickin to it. I made a few passes through my band saw with it and scrapped it. It came out of China via Canada. I still have the silver .62 though.

Old Fart, interesting day, guy who flew P47(didn't own it) totalled a Composite A/c Gee Bee 1. DA 110 on board and to my mind a "good crash" that is no doubt about what to do with the a/frame (bin it) and the mechanicals all appeared to survive. Went back to watching his 6 year old son flying his trainer. Windy day lots of variables so no O/T flying with contest models and my "second stringers" were at home not ready to play with. One guy is about to "experiment" with a Saito 30 powered foamie. Should prove interesting. They are all off to the Coota Cup next week new models, new Saitos and old McCoys abound so we'll see the results in a week or 2. Lousy day today so I might get out of mowing the yard and into the shed, fingers crossed. Now Saito wise I've been looking for info on Saito open rockers. Things like horse power, fuel burn etc any one point me in a suitable direction.

Trev you should'nt ask anyone here to point you in a direction,it can be downright dangerous,if you ask me! and if there's no-one here who is'nt licking his lips at the thought of a saito 30 flying a foamy don't worry mate..they're already dead (which is just as well cause they buried him,it's an aussie sense of humour and a popular saying here) that coota cup sounds interesting long as there's plenty of fourstrokes.

Dave i think i know what you mean re selling engines you like a lot.

ps sammy can i post you my old flak jacket ?

Sure why not! I hate to say it, BUT! lt was kinda funny, l'm old but, one was 73 and one was 60+ almost 70, it was like two 12yrs olds kicking sand in a sand box. The 73yr old cleaned the clock of the other guy and sent him to the ER with a broken leg (THAT WAS NOT FUNNY) The 73 yr old wen't to jail. And yesterday l went flying and my Saito was trying to (POP) like a valves was louse?? I had a corvette years ago that l had a big cam in it with the stock rocker arms and some times is would drive the push rod threw the rocker arm and that would make it pop. What is the valve lash setting on the Satio 91?

The FG-11 is getting better each flight. Fires on one flip once the carb gets fuel. RPM's are starting to pick up too. They guys at the field could not tell that its a gas engine, sounds no different than the glow engine. That makes me quite pleased, the T-clips would suck if it sounded like a sick chain saw like the 4* does, though the DLE20 is running better on the same fuel mix as the Saito. The T-Clips has become my favorite flyer, replacing the LT-40. Which is a good thing, the LT-40 is on the bench needed a pushrod replaced for the rudder, it is sticking too much to be effective on taking off and landing.

I also got my 100 GK running again, once it got fuel it fired right off. That is a tricky one to start, it likes to run backwards if I dont flip it fast enough, and the starter has problems too with it, but it eventually fires the correct way and runs like a demon. The plane however is not ready for prime time, I dont feel like it will fly well with how the tail is at the moment, the right elevator is warped, the balance tab on it sticks above the stab and there is a twist from one side to the other, thin I will see if I can get replacements from Tower since they were like this when I installed them, but didn't notice until the first flight. I was focused on the inner part where they join together making sure they are equal to each other. I tried to fly it yesterday, it taxied well, but on power up, as soon as it picked up enough speed to lift the tail it nosed over, and there is not a lot of up elevator either.

I'm running the Saito FG-33R3 (with Ray English mods) on 15:1 synthetic and turning 9450 RPM in flight with carbon fiber 18x6. Max recorded temp is 199 degrees on 75 degree day [on board telemetry]. Per the manual, the max RPM is 9500 on 18x8.

Question - should I up prop to increase load to stay comfortably under max RPM? If so, 18x8, 19x6? or, I'm fine spinning 99.9% of max.

Cheers

Was that 9450 RPM on a downline with a high throttle setting? I don't mind running near the redline occasionally but not as a steady diet.

.

Too close to redline to suit me unless, as Charley said, that's WOT in a dive.

Gripes, bad day, dang. I can count my blessing I never encountered the likes of that.
Had to suspend for a period of time guys for repeated safety violations. And another member decided to use our runway for a touch and go with his ultra light and brought a bunch of heat on us. The only time it ever got real heated I sent the guys arguing, home for the weekend. Got back up first. So it did not go any farther. Sometime it seemed like I had a whole bunch of adults going on 12.

No, level flight, full throttle.

I'll up prop for a little more load to stay under max RPM.
