Looking at BJ's video brought a question to mind. A few years ago a mate bought a 180 single. He put the recommended prop on it, but in wood, not plastic.
We had all manner of tuning issues, with the engine rattling and backfiring the prop off several times on throttle up.

We tried everything we knew with no success, until we eventually replaced the prop with a plastic one because the wooden one got damaged.
Problem solved. The added weight and flywheel effect of the plastic prop was what it needed all along.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Nice run BJ. I just broke in my Saito 1.00 twin doing my usual 10 minutes at each 1,000 rpm increment up to 8,000. That took 40 minutes, I then topped off the 16 oz tank which was about 1/8th" from sucking air, and burned about 10 more oz. I indexed the grub screws in the HS needle knobs so they face straight forward at fully closed. In the picture they are 1.5 turns open in picture #1, I picture #2 you see the lazy man's throttle rod, more function than beauty. In picture #3 it is running at 6,000 rpm. It's a keeper

Saito 1.00 twin, new and unrun but old in age.
Prop===Bolly 13.5x6
Fuel===WildCat 10% with 18% full synthetic
Exhaust, stock flex pipes
Plugs==Fox Miracles, new
Max rpm==9,605
Best idle==2,100, I had to open the airbleed screws. quite bit to get that.

James, I've never owned a 1.80 but have a high compression 1.50, (11.24 to 1), I run Master Airscrew Classics or Mejzlicks on it for that reason. It has C&H Ignition on it now, it's a ***** cat.Picture #2 is what the 1.50 will do to a Graupner 16x8 when leaned a little too far.

Dave glad you like the twin so much,don't they sound great? re your running out of fuel have a look thru the clear plastic tank and watch every drop of fuel get sucked in before the 'air' has time to think about filling that space.I don't know if that is linked to exhaust pressure values,or not.

James it probably was'nt the prop but they get damaged along the way.Nice engine and lots of power.

Trev what's with marcus ambrose? has he got to fat eating american oversize meals and racing nascar,or has hungry jacks meals and sweat it out v8 supercars got the best of him?

Thanks Pete,, I looked up Clarence Lee's test of the 1.00 twin and he got 9,350 rpm with a 14x6, so my 9,605 with a 13.5 x 6 Bolly looks very good. I don't like the sound of the pipes. They sound like a V twin lawn mower with a blown out muffler, I'm sure I can sweeten the sound with a couple of TurboHeaders. I have them already. This how I rigged up my 1.30 that I eventually sold.

So those Praying Mantis forearm lookin exhausts are called 'Turbo Headers'?

If so, that's what's on my 180

Re Ambrose - don't write him off just yet. I think the local boys are giving him a bit a belting around the ears - kinda like "welcome back" *thump!*. But I reckon once he gets the feel of the Ozzie 8's again and they get the car up to scratch, he might be doing more fighting up the pointy end...

Sorry BJ, I did not mean to mislead, here is a TurboHeader, they are compact, have a neat sound and enhance rpm by 250 to 360 or so. Christian Traders in your Country markets them.

Oakies - yeh, they look a bit different to anything I have.

They create a nice sound you say?

Must look into them a bit further then

I thought he had quit racing. We get ANDRA now on one of the racing channels.

IIRC, Marcus has come back to racing Ozzie V8SuperCars with backing from Team Penske. It's basically the old DJR (Dick Johnson Racing) team with Roger (?) Penske's involvement.

rofl !

Edit: I don't get what's happening. I entered "ROFL!" and it came in lower case. Also made my sig "Cr" instead of "CR." Couldn't fix it either.

What the ........?

I think it won't let you enter more than about 50% upper case in a post.

It's meant to stop ppl flaming (yelling).

Not much problem with flaming, talking Saito has a calming effect. I've got one of these coming pretty soon. Picture #2
Back to my 1.00 twin, I changed the exhaust to two of the older, long skinny .50/.56 mufflers. I'll try it tomorrow. It should have a really pleasant purr. L:ike picture #1

HI DAVE. I AM TESTING THE NO YELLING FIX IN THE POSTING SOFTWARE. IF IT DOES COME THROUGH IN ALL CAPS, I AM NOT YELLING AT YOU. ANYWAY,YOU SAID YOU WERE ALL CALMED AT THE PROSPECT OF GETTING YOUR 1.82T.
WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR USE OF THE TURBOHEADERS ON THE 1.00T? I WAS INTERESTED AS I MAY DO THAT WITH MY 1.30T, EVEN THOUGH MY NEW CLUB DOES NOT HAVE A STRICT NOISE POLICY.

Sincerely, Richard

Old Fart and others, re Ambrose well don't know what he is doing, I have lost a lot of interest in tin tops since the V* Super Car thing became our reality. I am an old Bathurst man having been involved with both Holden (principally) and Ford through my then employer Ansett. We had lots of specialist equipment plus QC F27's (for transport) that both those teams used at various times. For the the others if you can get footage of the Bathurst races of the 1970's and 80's you will see what I mean. I guy punting a car around the track for 500 miles by himself (no relief drivers) and the best year for me was when Brockie won by 5 laps and set 2 track records in those last 5 laps, and the most note worthy was Bill Brown (I think) demolishing an XY GTHO 2 years in a row on the armco at the top of the mountain. And for our NASCAR friends the other point of note was NASCAR banning Moffats XY GTHO from racing in NASCAR because it was to fast. In virtual street trim (all the interior in place) it still did nearly 200mph at Daytona and that was in the early 70's.
I didn't see Ambrose race cause we were testing for the up coming Canowindra O/T and Nationals O/T comps. Got some good gear working especially the Saito 30 for Texaco.

How'd you do that? I didn't know other than the originator could edit a post. Good work, have you been doing it all along, like for cr's post?

The TurboHeaders will be mounted when the break in is finished, I'll get numbers from the stock type mufflers first. I seem to only have one cast muffler of the .50 size.

it wasn't me. It was the yelling Nanny in the software. In fact, I tried posting in all caps too.

Must be some kinda well-kept secret.

I've seen it in other threads on other sites too - but as soon as I go over about 50% upper case in any of my posts, it gets converted to all lower case.

What THE?

Pete, Interestingly they sealed themselves to the front of the carb, I flared the carb end the same as the front. When I tightened the screws down in the mounting plate the plate flattened the flairs out sealing them, good thing even if unplanned To create the flairs I used a dead center for a lathe and pressed it into the tube using a 6" vice and some scrap wood.

FNQ,

You post about the XY GTHO piqued my interest. That was some car! Also read about Evan Green and the "Supercar Scare." Typical knee-jerk politicians. That guy Green sure shot everyone in the foot, including himself. I got a kick out of the solid-lifter Cleveland V8 being called "the rattler."

I came by a Saito .82 mounted in an airplane I picked up. Great running engine.
