My little Saito .30, which is one of the first sold is mounted in the PSP. Today I am going to wring it out then mount it on a newly finished LT 25, it hasn't been flown for about 5 years. I am setting up an 8 oz tank to match the one in the plane, then run it at full throttle for the whole 8 oz to get general idea of the available flight time. 8 oz should be plenty. The previous LT 25 had a nose gear, this one is a stock tail dragger.

Dave that must be something to look forward to eagerly, for my money they are the best bang for buck/capacity saito on the market and what's even stranger is that it sounds bigger than it is.

Mike, the 62 is going to be a good engine for the 4*. A 56 would be a great engine too for yanking the 4* around if you had one of those. The 4* is about the same as a Kavalier and my 56 was a lot of engine for the Kav.

As I said, I ran the Saito .30 at full throttle for an entire 8 oz tank minus about 1 minute to warm up. It peaked at 10,300 rpm with a Bolly 10.5x5, I richened it to 10,150. I took a picture at 22 minutes, (picture #1) from there to sucking air was 32 minutes.

Dave, I've always believed that full throttle runs like that does an engine good.

p.s. Is that an old Tower starter on the bench?

I agree. that is actually a Sullivan Hi Tork, I have DynaTron that is suffering from much use and some abuse. I only use it on the big stuff. The .30 has been flown for several hours, mostly on LT 25's one with a nose gear, my own doing. The new unflown one is a tail dragger with Kevlar pull, pull tail gear. I just ordered a couple of Windsor 8x6 three blades for the .30, you know how I luv three bladers. My guess is that it will turn the 3b at 10,000.

Hobbsy, I have 3 Sullivan starters on battery packs, a pair of Hi-Torqs and a Dynatron. Picked up that last one for a song recently as the previous owner bent the shaft with a prop strike. Took it apart and straightened it at work. From what I can see the only omission on their part was at least a bearing on the rear to handle the end loads.Did some dim checks and with a bit of effort could mod it for that, but have to stop that sort of thing and concentrate on getting all the projects ready for the season.

Anyway, they were also selling Sullivan batt cases with the charge indicator at the Toledo Show for half price as they forgot to bring the bracket assemblies. Easy fab as I had done the same on the previous pair so I moved things around. The smaller have been relegated to the normal cone and heli shaft start and the Dynatron is on that new Sully pack with a 4S LiPo and the larger cone for the 125's. Should be able to handle anything in the fleet now without dragging the field box and cables.

As I mentioned I recently traded for a baffed 100. Just installed the bearings and reassembled. Seems up to par and should be a good addition to the others waiting for a firewall to bolt to, I also am picking up a T/F Spit kit and have to decide which spare, the 91 or 100, would be the best match.

Barry look at the old bench run photo's and you will see two pieces of old rusty twisted steel rio bar,you will notice that one of them is bent,it's what dave used to start that contakerious(sp) high compression 150 that backfired every time you flick the prop.

Good one Pete, it doesn't do that anymore, I only had one straight bar left. C&H Hall Effect Sensor courtesy of Dan. Home made timing plate, removed after timing.

If you could find a CDI small enough to tuck into a .25 size airframe, you could fly it all morning on 8oz of fuel @ 1/2 throttle on a 1600 Ma battery pack.

Thanks Dan, Interestingly the FA .40a has a similar but two needle carb both have sort of built in velocity stacks.

On the saito 30, in my texaco model I was getting around 3 mls per minute burn (with a 4 pound model) on 5,000rpm. I was using I think a 10x6 prop (nothing special), oil was the dreaded 15% and 10% nitro (CD supplied fuel) so I would expect with moderate handling that the 30 would fly for about 60 minutes + on an 8oz tank. I only retired it from the texaco model because the deisel I fitted is meaner on fuel and I get to supply my own and in the process don't "stress" the 30 with low oil content fuel.

FNQ, I'd bet you're right about 60 minutes, I wanted to know the worst case scenario at full throttle. I'm going to do a 6 oz tank today, the one that's actually in the model.

Boys,i've happily spent this anzac monday public holiday here flying my h9taylorcraft and trying to get the 182 twin in the ballpark needle and screw wise, was'nt real successful today but good fun,it sounds so good in the air and on the ground.Just got home and unpacked it all, settled down with a beer and some good music to have a chilled out reflection on the days flying when the next door neighbours house alarm went off with a really annoying wee waa punctuated by the cats got it's tender parts caught in the rat trap again.Don't you miss real burglers who all seem to be quiet when they break into your house?

Maybe be I can offer some input on adjusing dual carbs.

As usual peak both HSNs before trying to adjust the LSNs.

On my FA-300TTDP, I set the LSN on each carb by tweeking each at the lowest stable idle. Lean out 1 of the LSNs until you detect that cylinder falling out, then open just a hair more than is needed to bring that cylinder back. Repeat for the other carb & check transition.

Pete- or it's a husband adjustment tool his wife uses on him.

Dave, I asked because I have an ancient Tower starter that looks like that one. It must be 30 years old and will turn over a rusted battleship engine if needed.

I just ran the little Saito .30 again with the aforementioned 6 oz tank but used a MA 3 blade 10x5. Much to my surprise the rpm are nearly identical to the Bolly 10.5x5. I gave up after 30 minutes and tank was still half full. I just ordered a TruTurn 1.75" 3 blade spinner for it. I did a more flight like run at 5,500, 6,500 and 7,500 in flight like time spans with occasional 30 second runs at full throttle. I settled it in at 10,100 rpm about 2 clicks rich of peak, got a nice steady 2,200 rpm idle on the bottom.

I have found that the only real advantage of 3 bladed props over 2 bladed ones (all things being equal) is the distance from the prop tip to the ground. The equivalent 3 bladere is general a smaller diameter.

A three bladed prop should be smoother if you have good leading edges on it and it is balanced, run out checked, etc.

I like the braking action on 3 bladed props on the down lines.

I mined through my props and found a Graupner 9x7 3 blade prop thinking it would be a match. It is an overmatch, the Saito .30 could only manage 8,100. That little exhaust really barked when it was working that hard. The Graupner was a good match for the Irvine .25 Diesel conversion.

Hobbsy give it more nitro the 30 will take up to 30% depending on what you want but 15 to 20% is a good working range with 20% synthetic oil.

On starters. I have a real big one (starter) that I have yet to use (chinese), a standard sullivan, a pro torque, (both used on standard engines), an Align "walkabout starter ", lipo powered great stuff, have yet to find a "normal engine" it can't start (up to 40cc) and a you beaut little sullivan that I use to beat to death recalcitrant cox 049's. It actually spins faster than the little "dickens"

LOL There Oldfart. Don't be that way! Lover your mum' I lost mine in 72. Her middle name was Kate. I world war 2 a (Kate) was a KILLING AIRPLANE. And i don't mean she (THE KATE) was a sleeper of an airplane. Now the Zero was. I got one that i just had to have and it's been standing behind the door in the bed room for the last three years. I have been trying to trade off the 180 that is in my brother's Chipmunk for two cheep 26cc gas motors from HK, BUT! I think i'm going to scale it out and put the 180 in the Zero and make it and the Yellow Aircraft T-6 into a show plane. The Zero has a 80"Ws, Shows a 30-50cc gas. The T-6 gas a 101"Ws. It has a G62 and I think ii'm going to change it out for a BME 102 (This thing is a brick) I built two of them 25 years ago at the price of $6000.00 for both and his has been rebuilt two times. I wish i could afford a Radial for both, man that would be sweet! l also have two TF P-47 to rebuild. I do more work in retirement then i did when i was working, guess thats better than being dead! lol The hold up on the Zero is retracts. BUT! No puns on your Mom! Love her for a long time, for if not for our Mom's we would not be here!

Default Thread Diameter and Pitch for Bib Block Rocker Cover Screw

Does anyone have this information?

I fired up my FA-180 today & noticed the exhaust rocker cover dancing around. One screw was backed out about 1/8" & the other was missing. I must have forgotten to tighten them down the last time I was had the cover off.
