Old Fart, tried the 30 in the Rainbow but liked the OS 20 (4S) better when it was fitted, almost similar performance and given we (my mate and I) don't race around the circuit when sport flying it was the best combo for us. On the glo plug thing WHY don't people (for "normal use") use the factory plugs or at least the factory recommended plugs. I use Saito plugs generally and OS F plugs for performance. Never had a problem with all the various fuel mixes that I have used. I once used an Enya 3 with 50% + nitro and that was interesting once I got it to run. Sold the engine soon after to a person desperate to have it. Wood ducks are every where.

In fact, that's the kit mine is going in. I was lucky enough to run across a NIB GK version. The 4*20 is about half built as Sig designed it mostly with electric in mind, so some changes had to be made. I needed an access cover to the fuel tank. I don't like torque rods so I added an aileron servo in each wing. The Saito 30 is too long for the cowling, so I had to build out the nose almost 1 1/2 inches. I also added counterbalances for the elevators and rudder.
I'm not much into high wing planes anymore, but I considered the LT-20 at first. They're just too expensive. They were $125 a year or so ago. Too much for a small kit so I passed until I saw the 4*40.

I have been running FOX plugs in all of mine without issues. Also picked up some Merlin plugs, and they work well too. The only one I will be looking to get top RPM from is the 72 in the Somethin Extra. The rest are in planes that top speed is not something they need. Dont need to rip the struts off my Cubs.

I have a Saito 100 FA can anyone tell me if this would be decent for a 90" wingspan Great Planes Cub? I only fly scale so i am not looking for a rocket ship.

If your plug is too hot you enrich the mixture to quench the plug and retard the timing, as you do you the engine will pick up speed. Being rich of peak does not mean you are at the optimal mixture, rather it is a compromise between mixture and timing. If it is too rich it will smoke heavily. If you were too switch to a cooler plug you will find that it will now pick up RPM when you lean the mixture. If it is the correct heat it will have more RPM than with the hot plug and will not smoke as much. You will have more power and better fuel economy. You cannot truly properly tune an engine without trying several glow plugs.

Thats the GP ALMOST 1/5th scale version like the SIG, and thats the engine I have on mine, and its FAST with a 14x6 APC, best prop for scale would be an Evolution 15x6 prop, if you can find one. A 70 flies the GP one with authority so the FA 100 will be plenty.

I think on the nose I would take the easy way and just have the stock extended, slab fuselage sides, like the bigger star models. Funny, after all of these years, I have never owned a 4 star. I have flown them a few times. Seems like a good platform for a leisurely engine like the .30. Originally, and the only aircraft I had it installed in, was one of the old Polks hobbies .25 sized Fokker DR1 triplanes. That was a fun combo. So fun in fact, I flew it into the ground eventually.
Hey Bruce, I know you read stuff on RC Universe a while back. If you're still reading please jump in and give us a few words of wisdom, okay? We're a pitiful bunch in this club and I don't know how we get by. And, I may have a few more "indestructible Flying King" stories for you.

Barry, I know this is not big headlines but here is a shot of the Saito .56b I stumbled upon, I like the look of the b's. I have had two previous .56's and they are sweet engines.

I have the OS 70 in my Great Planes Cub 90 " and it is perfect for scale flying....the Saito 100 would be overkill if you like that...if you ever put floats on it the 100 would be perfect though....

A new build Fokker D8 turned up at the field the other day, it has an OS 30 gas engine fitted. The whole outfit, radio, plane and engine were brand new. On start up the engine had fuel pouring out of it. Long story short the owner had dropped it (the engine) onto the carpet in his workshop. It appears to have stuffed the carby. It also appears that the carbies on OS gas engines are susceptible to any sort of impact. Comments any one?
