OK richard you win,got me with tractor photos i'm hidin under the desk.Can we call it a truce if i fit saddlebags to the duke?

Richard and Pete, here is a little trivia, Harley was the first to use one quarter speed cams, supposedly to reduce friction and heat and reduce the torque required to turn the cams. They were made by a man named Schaller. As you can see this bumpstick by Ed Iskenderian has twice as many bumps. They never really caught on.

"Ver' Interesting, but strange" It looks as if the two cam lobes per exhaust (or intake) have different timing. Could it be that with four valves per cylinder the two intake (or exhaust ) valves would be offset in opening and closing to increase their duration? Or, am I way off on what is shown?

India? I'm talking about the USA! But since you wanna go international, there are still over 50,000 YUGO's still on the road in Serbia, where they were made under license by Zastava. The Zastava plant was destroyed by allied bombing during the Serbian/Croation conflict. Zastava is back in production today, selling mostly in the eastern European market. There are still many YUGOs on the road in the USA. How can you ignore all the owners' clubs worldwide when you claim the car was a failure? All those folks have running YUGOs.

I suspect you have an attitude that you can't defend rationally but won't give up. Forget it.

Default Saito FG-40 info wanted please

I've posted the same request on the gas forum too, hoping to benefit from the wider trawl.

I have been flying a couple of FG-36's for the past few years. Mine are the really early ones and have been trouble-free. I'd like a tad more power for a 27.5% Bucker Jungmeister I designed a while back which came out rather heavier than I wanted, and if the FG-40 would give me 400 or 500 more rpm on an 18x8 APC wide blade, it would probably do the trick. The 36's give me about 7700-7800 on that prop, and I'd like at least 8200-8400.



Or, is the 40 better on bigger props, say 19x10, on which prop I think the 36 would be lucky to reach 7300 or so.

Can anyone help?

Starting a new Saito question: I recently purchased a used Saito FA-56 and ran it on the bench. I used a 12x6 MA prop, 20% nitro/20%synth oil. It ran quite nicely even though I didn't have a way to tach it since it was late in the afternoon shade. The questions I have are:
1. I would like to reverse the carb orientation, but I can't because the intake manifold is stuck in the carb and I am afraid to apply too much effort to twist it. Any tricks for that?
2. The compression feels very soft statically even though the idle, transition, and wot performance were quite nice. Should I do something about that? I guess top end performance is the sole indicator of compression health?
3. Can the FA-56 handle an APC 13x4 prop? I need something with 4 inch pitch only because I want to put it on a floater plane. I suspect a 12x4 is too small for this engine?

H, the O-ring may just be stuck a little in the top of the carb, they don't turn easily anyway. I can't respond to the popsickle stick prop question, I've never owned any, I prefer, make er go props. Is the valve lash OK, not set near zero as some advocate. I have been using the Saito provided gauge for 28+ years with never an issue. Thanks

I set the valve gaps to .04 pass, .10 no pass. For the o-ring, can I use some penetrant oil to help loosen it? For the prop, I need a low pitch (x4) because the Rascal 40 would never land if the prop pitch is any higher. All I have is the APC in teh 13x4 size and I am too cheap to go buy another one.

A year or more ago I bought a used Saito 125 ( I think its 125) and put it in a Top Flite P51, Today was the first day I had a chance to fire it up. All I can say, the previous owner had tuned it well. It fired right up ad ran perfectly. It flies the Mustang very well, nice flight at half throttle. Hoping I can keep from cracking up the plane on landing so that I can get good at flying it. I finally worked out the snap roll issue by reducing the elevator throw, and it is a nice flyer.

The test run I made showed that this engine is a nice one. The idle was so steady, fast throttle response, and the 12x6 prop was ripping. I just need to flip the carb orientation to fit in the old plane. Based on what I saw with the 12x6 prop, I think the 13x4 will work. But I need to check it to verify. This is my first "small" Saito, my others are the 82, 91, and the 180 (which I sold). I purchased all of them used with no problems at all.

Hi hsukaria.
I use the "power factor" to get ballpark prop selections.
The power factor is a comparative number calculated by multiplying the diameter squared by the pitch.
ie a 12x6 would have a power factor of 12x12x6=864.
the 13x4 would have a power factor of 13x13x4=676.

It is therefore slightly less propellor for your engine and you can expect slightly more rpm.

Below is the data for a Saito FA82B recommended props. You can see that the data points fall in a distinct region.
Any unlisted props can be used if their calculated data falls within this region.


Now this is the data for the FA56 recommended props, with your 13x4 added in in red.


This post is an attempt to help hsukaria, but also a discussion point to which I would welcome comment from the more experienced guys.

Ok i'll think not very seriously about the king and queen seat..but apehangers?? i'd shoot myself first to save the duke

Charley okc feels like that way about YUGO that i feel about harleys and dave forgives me for that plus! if the 'allied bombers" had managed to lob a few through the LADA fourwheel drive factory there's many people who would shout them a box of beer at least.

Huk i've never run a 56 but my 62 loved a 12x6 popsicle stick..

No I didn't. Regrettably you didn't understand that reply. The reply was in respect of the OS 40cc petrol and had nothing to do with the Saito 40cc..

Some of the guys here dont like stinky engines, if it aint glow, it dont go. I have run both glow and gas, and love the efficiency of the FG-11. The FG40 might pull more RPM than the 36 after break in, that 4CC could be the difference you need. I would put the FG57T on it though if it would fit, then you have plenty of power, and one bassadd looking plane.

Thanks acdii. Funnily enough, I don't find the Saito petrols stinky at all. They run so cleanly that apart from a dab with a damp cloth at the rear of the cowl to remove a smear from a small oil weep from the exhaust rocker cover, the models don't need washing after every flight like equivalent size glow-powered models. I recently re-engined one of my models with a 40cc Laser 240 vee twin glow engine and have rarely had such oily hands before. So the Saito 36 is going back in even though the Laser is 500rpm faster on an 18x8 APC wide!

FWIW, here's how I dispose of the crankcase breather oil on my 36's:



The result is no breather oil anywhere on the models. Additionally, the Walbro carb won't let fuel through unless the engine sucks it. This means that I can block off both fill and oveflow vents to stop petrol fumes coming out of the tank. You can't do this with a glow carb, since if you do, if the vapour in the tank heats up in the car on the way home, the pressure in the tank will increase and force any residual juice out through the carb, to drip onto the car floor. I only made that mistake once.

Judging by the apparent reluctance of anyone to own up to having a Saito FG-40 it looks as if I'll just have to cough up the dough and see for myself.

The engines are a whole lot cleaner, but the fuel itself stinks, storing the fuel is dangerous too unless you have a shed. My T-Clips is gas, and even though its sealed up, it will still smell after a while, especially if its in a hot trailer. I scavenge my crankcase to the exhaust, so other than a few specks on the landing gear, no cleanup needed.

Pete maybe I'm going to the dogs, I am buying an other OS, a .95v and am looking at a water cooled Harley. A Saito 1.25 is in my slightly more distant future too.I may be busy tomorrow, all the stuff I need to re-charge the AC in my truck is coming. Yes, including a vacuum pump. A new tool never goes to waste.

any good videos on how to take apart a satio fa100 and replace the bearing do i need a gear puller for the prop ring thanks
