Hi Dave. Any chance of some thrust measurements between those two props? What prop would you suggest for break-in and then normal flight for my 100 on a TF AT-6? Thanks and VBR to you and yours.

Sincerely, Richard

Yep, flying with a LeRhone you needed a seat with a built in funnel and ejection tube in the bottom of the fuselage. Just don't be over a friendly trench on release!

What was the term that was coined by the old pilots? Something to do with the castor oil, scarfs, and having to run to the crapper the moment they land.

On the 100, with an APC 14x6 I hit 10,500 RPM. I adjusted the radio end point to keep it below 9600 RPM. Man could that motor and prop move the Cub. Now I just use the Evolution 15x6 on it, looks scale like, sounds scale like, and flies scale like at half throttle. Really good combination for an over powered Cub.

Richard the 15x6 seemed to be perfect for the break in, I don't get all carried away with heat cycling and all that. There is nothing in a Saito that can benefit from it. I just do what I do to get 40 some minutes on it and they're ready to go. It doesn't take hours or gallons of fuel. I have never worked out a way to measure thrust. I should toy with that idea though, the longer prop would look better on the AT6.

AC, do you have picture of the Evolution prop and is it from Horizon? Thanks, Dave

I have the new 1.25 in the PSP ready to go with a new MA Classic 16x6 on it. I also have an old Graupner 15x8 to try also.

If you can find them, appears they are discontinued.

Shame too, I busted my spare in the failed maiden of the Biper.

Hello all. I haven't posted in a while and wanted to get the latest trends and ideas.
I have a few models that are Saito powered and I would like to convert (or replace) for gas power.

I have a low time FA-125 that runs great in my TF P-51. A FA-72 in my classic Kyosho Stearman; An FA-100 pickled just sitting in a box...
I have a fairly new FG-14 that needs an airframe...
With the high price of glow fuel and I don't see it going down any time soon -- I think it is time to jump. I love the saito sound in the mustang and can't see putting in a DLE or something 2 stroke.
Is converting the 125 worth it? Is there a kit from CH Ign for this small engine? Should I just sell it and get the FG-21 instead?

How well does the converted engines run vs. the same FG size? Any experience you care to share?
Will the glow carb do the trick or will a 3rd party carb setup be better?
The Stearman is a really tight install and it will be a trick to add the ignition box and second battery...

Decisions --- Decisions! Any thoughts are most appreciated.
Thanks!

That depends what you are going to fly it on. Anything more aerodynamic than the Hindenburg and it will unload & over rev in the air.

SR, I was being sarcastic. RC, don't listen to OF, he likes ragging on the 125. CH Ignitions has what you need, but you have to call them to get it, they don't list it on their site. It's a future mod for me too.

How much flex on the MA? That is one reason I stopped using them, seems like a waste of power with how much they flex, changes the pitch of the prop when it does that.

Remember the flex with the original white nylon (Top Flite ?) props that you had to boil before using or they would throw a blade? I still have a 9x6, on a K&B Greenhead .29, but would never use it.

I was using a Master Airscrew Classic fiberglass reinforced prop, they don't flex.

Would be interesting to see the difference in thrust between the different size and brands of props. Maybe some means of putting the test stand on a roller rail with a spring scale to measure thrust. Thinking something like a pair of drawer slides to mount the fixture to so that its limited to only the distance the spring scale travels.

Yes they do dave i have a 15x8 mas classic like that one on the 115 which is in a midget mustang. You can safely stand to one side when it is properly tuned and give it the berries right off idle and watch the prop tips arch forward.Good prop tho and on that midget in a dive it rips the prop tips and makes a nice boom sound.Might be different with a 125

In the 15x8 size you have the K prop which has thinner, narrower blades than the Classic 16x6, honest..

If you used a digital fish scale, then the movement of the engine/slide would be restrained by the scale.

Safety first though, always want something to stop it from moving just in case the scale detached.

Well test it first with your 125,then you can start with the 30,45,56 and just ease up the horsepower scale.Dave you are right it's a k prop.

Well, it fills the bill with a better prop than an APC. I am sure Horizon accomplished that with 30% fuel.

Key Features

  • Less weight but more thrust
  • 10 ounces lighter than the FA-120
  • Turns an APC 16x6 at 9,000 rpm
  • 13mm Muffler threads
