Well good news is I would much rather fly the Rascal with the DA100 than the CARF 330L it is on now. I have never flown it, nor do I want to. I might just strip it of servos and everything else and use them in the Rascal. It has a Powerbox, two Lion packs, 32 ounce tank, and 8 high torque digital servos, along with a standard throttle servo. IIRC the Rascal uses 4 in the wings, two in the tail and one for the rudder, so I will have a spare servo. The biggest unknown about using the DA 100, the prop clearance. It swings a rather large prop, 28x10 is what I have now.

I'm swinging an 18 X 8 on the Rascal 110 and it has ample room for more so I'm thinking of going to a 20 X 6 for more thrust & better brake effect for landing..

Given that the Rascal 168 is 53% larger, it should have room to swing a 30" prop. You might consider going to a 30 x 8 for the same reasons.

So a 28" prop only has 14" swing and the 168" rascal sets what 12" of the ground at the landing gear. So I think it will be fine

Yep, after watching the video I can see there is plenty of ground clearance. The wing design looks very strong with a full center section and 4' tips with dual tubes to attach them to. I think the DA100 on the 168 would be the equivalent to the Saito 100 on my 1/5th Cub. Calls for a .60 FS, and I have a 1.00 FS. The 168 calls for a 60CC, and I have a 100CC.

.
But you'll still be relying on 2 nylon bolts on a 44# high wing.

If you pull a + 4 -G maneuver, that's 88#of dynamic load on each nylon bolt. SIG only spec's a 60cc maximum. When you exceed the spec, you need to make sure the airframe will be up to the added stress.

I would add some wing struts.

The other alternative would be to substitute metal wing bolts, but then will the anchor points hold up?.

I have been looking around and see that DLE has a good price on 111. But I sure would like to put a big saito in the rascal. Refresh my memory, what is the biggest saito they make.

Boy there are so many choices. It all depends on how I would like to fly a big airplane.
now I see the problem that acdii is having. Well at least I still have a lot of time to ponder.
Sure would like to see a Big saito in it.

This will probably be available before the Rascal 168. It has the Ray English intake modifications for better A/F distribution. The FG-84 has had temperatures that vary widely between cylinders and this modification has addressed that flaw.

I fly the same and agree but we should warn dave because he's a true blue ace tuner,we all know that. With a worn out old fox miracle plug and a quality apc prop he'll pick up lots more revs on his favourite saito and he might accidently stand behind it and get blown bass ackwards.Grey props to you dave

Just discovered this forum. Getting back into flying after after a forty four year hiatus. Have a lot of these saito engines and love them all. Is it still possible to join this brotherhood?

No way, I just got it in June and took three trips already that we normally would not have been able to afford when you factor in hotels and meals. Been to Utah and back. Got some really nice pics too.

My brother and his wife sold the house and bought one of these last November. http://leisurevans.com/unity/ They have not stopped traveling yet! They got the floor plan with the Murphy Bed and the bump out.

It needs a Saito on the bonnet - just like the Flying Lady on an RR

I am seriously thinking about this end of life approach. When you consider the initial cost of the RV, and the low fuel (diesel?) mileage, what does the cost per trip, amortized over the RV's life and resale value, compare to what trips by car and hotels would be? Did you have to sell your primary residence as did another poster? If you did, do you have a trailer to tow behind the RV to hold your RC stuff Thanks.
