Default Saito Rings

Anyone worn out a Saito piston ring?

I've torn down my preowned 82 a half a dozen times to trouble shoot and replace/clean various parts. Looks like everything is a go now except maybe the ring. Each time I reassembled it with the ring gap in the exact same position to minimize break in wear. The first 4 times I torn it down the ring gap position was in the exact same spot after running. These last two times it wasn't, it had rotated 45°, then 90° and peak rpm is down from 9700 to 9350. Idle is now unstable at 1900 where previously it was rock solid. I checked the intake tract for leaks, tried a new F plug and the valves are seating perfect so maybe the ring has had to re seat too many times?

Some of you here seem to have run endurance tests on Saitos, really put them through the wringer. What say you?

It doesn't matter where the ring gap is, it works the same everywhere and since it's not pinned it won't stay put.

I got to look inside the smelly two stroke K&B 45, the cylinder hold down bolts had red Loc-Tite on the full length of the threads. I was lucky to get them out without twisting them off. The cylinder has plenty of pinch, the crank bushing is slop free. The bolts are all 6-40 and not the typical 6-32.The head gasket is an O-ring, that's new to me too. New bolts and gaskets coming.

Hey all
A local to me guy has a Saito 3.25 five cylinder radial like mine. Trying to work out a way to add it to my collection. He mentioned to me that Saito had dropped that engine and it is unavailable new.
Anybody have a back story on that claim?
This on is the dual plug per head, I believe that is later than my single plug motor.
Whaadayano bout that historians?

The engine code for the 325-r is X, they no longer have the engines, just parts and only 38 of them: https://www.horizonhobby.com/SearchD...ain=&pageView=

https://www.horizonhobby.com/product...A-y-saie325r5d

Here is some more skinny on it. This one is engine code Y, the code chart has the numbers transposed as 235R5D, the D for dual plug.

Wow, they actually have cylinders for the Y: https://www.horizonhobby.com/cylinde...y-sai325r5d01c

Speaking of springy, I received the new valve springs for the 82. The free height of the new springs is .005" LESS than the old ones. Didn't bother to install them, nothing wrong with the old ones.

It had never had a battery installed and the cables were gone, I made my own, it starts instantly. I had to rebuild the carb and replace the fuel line and fuel filter.
USPS tracking still says that the 120-R Keleo exhaust is still coming today, so wile waiting for that I've been rescuing a 7,500 watt Porter Cable generator. It has a 13 hp Saito engine in it.

Generally on larger engines most folks tend to avoid placing the end gap in the middle of the thrust face. Many assembly manuals specify the preferred stagger at assembly.

Dave

Double check, those screws may be 5-40 . Just a wee bit smaller OD at .125"
They were quite popular back in the day.

Gary, they are 6-40 and I'm glad the instructions mention it because I almost ran a 6-32 tap into them. That might have made a real mess.

Yo Crunch, have you run that 82 yet, it should be smooth as glass.

Okay, just thought I would offer a heads up. The 5-40 and 6-40 get flip flopped at times. The 5-40!are easy to spot being an even 1/8 inch.

Yep, sure is a good thing

Thanks for the heads up. I ordered a new set of bolts the Red Loc-Tite left them messed up. I have enlarged the occasional had bolt from 4-40 to 5-40 so far that has not caused any problems, but certainly cured some.

boy, I like the Hog, but it's a bit bigger than I want, but maybe I will buy one, but I will have to look a bit longer to see if I can find something a bit smaller, but just as sporty,

actually I am looking for 2 birds, one for my HP 61 and one for my K&B 100, I would like planes in the 68"-62" span for the 61 and something like 64"-66" for the 100,

rather ARF or a build kit, any body have an ideas ??

Because if they are going to make a 100cc or bigger inline twin or triple gas engine i'll buy it and it's going in this thing

And get flown like this, nice CARF mustang boys

Glowy when you took the barrel off your fa82 you can grab the big end of the rod and try to pull the piston out without putting a finger on the top of a valve,it takes a lot of pulling if all is good.

Now,an analogy if i may, please bear with me.Most, but not all diehard motorcycle riders will read motorcycle magazines and use the internet to read motorcycle related articles/blogs...where they discuss among other things what a motorcycle manufacturer has just patented for use on next years models, and what everybody thinks is a fair guess at size, performance and weight figures.Motorcycle manufacturers as a group suffer from the same leakers that gummints around the world do,right or wrong.
My question relating to SAITO fg engines is this...does anyone here know where you can go to get a peek at what saito are or may be producing in the near future??

Jim,

Take those Hog plans to Kinkos. They can shrink them to any size you want. I did that with a Fly Baby and it worked out well.

How about a Venture 60?
I have a new kit. A lot like the Four star 60 but sportier. Many folks do a clipped wing version and they always fly well. One of the nicest kits you will ever see too.

Not sure how this applies. I was primarily interested in your experiences with saito ring wear.

Not always, I've seen rings spin in full size engines and I've seen them stay exactly where I put them when I built the engine. I think it depends on the concentricity of cylinder, piston and rings as well as many other factors including but not limited to harmonic vibes. As I mentioned earlier I have seen them spin and not spin in this saito 82 as well.

As with Gary, I am interested in your experiences with saito ring wear Dave.

Yes Pete, it takes a lot of pulling with the valves closed, even more now that the valves aren't leaking.
