The ST45 on ice is yours for the asking! The last 2 stroke I had was a G21-46 that I got from Dave on trade.Darn nice one. I only wanted that because I had one on my first Kadet MKI forty plus years ago. My son is building another MKI so I gave the engine to him.

Other than that;

I can't stand 2 strokes

Gary, thank you for the offer, but the 45 is too small, LOL dry it out and take it to the swap meet, sell it for $15 or $20 for gas money

but couldn't you come to love the HP rear carb 2 strokes, you can get one in a 40 size LOL

Jim

45 too small ?

Shoot, I remember back in 1962 thinking my brand new Fox .15X was huge!

Flew that great big DeBolt Champion "trainer" okay.

The big old Taurus hailed a huge load of radio with a little .35 .

Gary! You may have just helped me identify my vintage highwing plane. I've searched online off and on for almost a year trying to figure out what plane it is with no luck. Turns out it may be a 56" Hal Debolt "Live Wire" Champion Mk1. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

Ready for a run.
Good morning from here to good evening there. The Keleo ring is on, 15 degrees F is too cold for "ME" to run it. The little plane is nearly ready to cover, I seem to bog down when that time comes. I'll get it though.

Well mister Hobb’s looks good.
What kind of experience have you had with the Saito 180.
I have made a couple high compression 180’s but never really ran a stock one just looking for some input

Good morning CC, I have never owned a 180, only a very early 150 and a 220. I have a friend in Princeton, W.Va. who owns five of them and he loves them. Interesting story, Bobby got one of the first 180's that Horizon shipped, he broke it in on 15% Wildcat pretty much like I do it. He installed it on a plane, filled the tank with 30% fuel and about one minute into the 180's maiden flight the crankshaft busted it's way down through the rear of the crankcase. Horizon sent him a new engine, no questions asked and he never looked back. Bobby runs them hard.

What compression ratio did you settle on, my 150 has 11.24 to 1, Saito lowered it in the later ones. Thanks, Dave

You gotta watch those ringless pistons, they'll fool you.

Well, gotta choose your battles but I will be making a ringed piston for the old open rocker. Originally ran that one on Cool Power fuel.
I would love to fly that one again someday, soon.

This 45 I owned for a brief time had no ring and exhibited poor compression when hot.,I had no interest in it beyond it being a novelty which is not a good reason to buy an engine.
Yes sir, I remember Clarence Lee saying the the ring less Saitos had poor compression when hot, made them difficult to start.

And a bit anemic as well from what I've read. Things got better with rings and hotter cams. Both the 30s and 45s ringed engines are reported to be lovely runners. I would love to have a 30S for my mystery vintage highwing plane.

The old 30 is the only un-ringed Saito I have owned. Both of my .45 as well as the 45 Specisl are ringed engines. All are fine runners. Tach readings aren't everything; I really like the mild cam timing for my low and slow, figure eight touch an go flying fun.

The 45 are very nice running engines.

The little 30 should be too, once it gets its fresh, ringed piston.

Yes, folks say those milder cammed Saitos were a joy to run. Idle very smooth at very low rpm.

It'll be interesting to see how good of shape the cool power left the cam and lifters in on your 30 when you tear it down.

Doesn't the 30 have a taper bored cylinder for the non-ringed application? How will you handle that if going to a ringed piston?

I have a Saito 1.80 on my large HOTS. I want to add a pump to the engine. I have used Conley (Perry) Pumps and have really enjoyed using them. I have had half a dozen Saito engines, but never had used a pump on them. I feel my 1.80 doesn't get enough fuel in loops. I am looking for a pump but have had no experience using them on 4 stroke engines. Any help I can get will b greatly appreciated.

how about a pump off an OS 155 (click my first link), but most likely it runs off crank case pressure so you will have to tap the back side of it for a hose barb, and make a mount for it. if you want it check into it well so you will know if you can put a hose barb on it. and you will have to tap the engines back plate..

also, with a pump on such a large engine will you need a regulator ? if you do some of the OS 91 and 105 Heli engines have regulators, I bought some for my Saito engines I will mount inverted, the older os 91 regulator is like $70 or $80, and the newer one is nicer but cost $115

https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...EARCH=OSMG2200

newer regulator here,,
https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXZTC9&P=7

the older regulator here, Discontinued but still can be found on the net,,
https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXMLA1&P=7

there is one more OS regulator, it's the same as the older one in my last link, but it mounts like the newer regulater..

Jim
of course it's a Saito

Glowy i some times wish dave would wear glasses when taking photos, just kidding dave, did you sneeze when you pulled the trigger? i looked up 15f and it converts to -10c here which never happens. We are on the right side of the globe at the moment and are having 100f and well over days full of sunshine, good old west aussie summer weather.I'm not bragging seriously!

Glowy i've never used cool power but have read about people calling it cruel power, whether that's just a vent or not i don't know.If it's true that saito ringless engines operate on the same pinch point principles as cheap smelly two strokes i'm happy they stopped making them it will be interesting to hear how gary plans to approach the job,i agree with his opinion the tacho readings don't tell the whole flying story. It's far more important to match the right saito engine to the best airframe.

ps cajun like dave i run an fa220 and have no problem going vertical except keeping the model in sight. When you say you 'feel' your fa180 is starving going vertical when performing a loop,is that towards the end of a ten minute flight? there are some tuning remedies among other things you can easily do.Most people here know i'm fairly simple and i've watched a lot of people fool with perry pumps on four stroke engines and rarely get it right, leads to a frustrating day at the field with bugger all flying done.If you can, stick to the kiss principle.

Pete, I took that picture to show a feller how much oil the little 30 expels, it's not the picture I intended to show. I'll find a better one.
I am going to install a new alternator on my F 150 today, I guess at 216,000 that's OK, I ordered a new Bosch, (not rebuilt).

Taper, if any on the vintage Saito 30 is not enough for concern. The cam in that engine was replaced fairly early on, around 1982. Yep, the fitting on the cam box is the vent.
My first Saito and my first four stroke. A good learning tool.

Heatwave here, north of Canada today, 4°F (-15.5°C) No big deal, cold happens.

Pete, Gary, see what I will be picking up Saturday in NH for my smelly 2St HP 61. it's a Hobby Lobby TeleSport, 60" span, just what I want, round wing tips, round rudder. I will bash it into an open cockpit, and tighten up the cockpit a bit, love the open cockpit sport planes. maybe lower the turtle deck a bit too, maybe I will put the landing struts in the wings and use Robart Robostruts

it's untouched, it will be my first kit build, I will most likely screw it up LOL, but it will be fun building/trying LOL. now I got to figure out what scheme for the covering.

EDIT, I just thought of a name for it, it has to be an old name, for an old racer,,, "the Spark O Matic

Should be a fun and easy build for you Jim. Looks quite similar to the Great Planes Super Sportster I had.
