Oh, and thanks Hobbsy.

I think that I just replied. This site is cryptic on the PM thing. Hit send and the screen goes blank, no confirmation. Let me know if you get it.

well I got sick of looking, and decided, I ordered my calipers (and other things), last night, got them today, shipping was only $12.

you can see to the left of the zero in the photo that the lens came with a very small scratch on it, I couldn't get away from that could I

Definitely! Although it may be a while before it warms up enough in Iowa.

I believe it. The cambox probably adds more strength. The front bearing area is beefier or at least deeper than the original design too.

Isn’t the out of round rear opening due to the plastic rear cover?

No,it's down to flexible arf blue engine mounts mostly,if it happens at all.Apart from the new cam cover and back plate my new fa82 looks identical to the old pair.

Dave what do you think the consequences of running a gallon of proper rc diesel fuel through the new red turbo diesel car be...sure would smell good.Wondering about the mileage tho.

More likely a combination of the two. Those equipped with aluminum plugs never go out of round, The 72 and 82 that I use metal mounts and the lower saddle with never go out either.

Gary, is that a modified control horn holding the vent line on the firewall?

Also, can the rear opening of an engine case ever be out of round far enough to make any discernable difference in engine performance or longevity? Seems to me it wouldn't matter much, but then again I've never had one that was out of round far enough to interfere with back plate installation. I've never measured one either.

Nice work on that engine mount. I'd give my left arm for a mill.

Got a brand new one here for a 45 Mk II. Tag says I paid $13 a few years ago. PM me if you can use it.

Probably no big deal aside from making the aluminum backplate difficult to fit properly. Also a pretty good indication of the mount lugs being displaced a bit.

I got my Bridgeport about 20 years ago. The head needed total stripping and numerous parts. Paid $100 for the mill and spent about 100 hours making it right! Not to mention $400 in bearings, dog clutches etc.

I wouldn't be without the Clausing 4900 lathe and that old Bridgeport. Good tools. Figure I got the Bridgeport for less than the cost of a Saito 182 and it has done a lot more for me over the years. The lathe I got from a school shop auction when the college brain trust closed down Shop classes in schools. That was another well spent $1000 plus the tooling like chucks ,collets, steady rests, tool holders etc.

Of course, loading and transporting them home requires a bit of rigging and grunting too. The mill is under 1 ton and the lathe about 1/2 that.

The machines pay off real well, better than having a few more engines around Very durable, they last several lifetimes and produce a lot of unique parts and tools.

Don't recall what I cut that bracket from.

Interesting shot of my 82 piston. When I first saw it I thought, Wow detonation and cracks!!! Neither, just post casting shrinkage or some kind of casting flaws that were too low to machine off. Whew! Still, I'm not jumping and up down for joy at how it looks if you know what I mean.

I was very surprised to find that no machining is performed to create the valve reliefs, just cast and left that way.

Where's everyone at? There are two other pics online of Saito pistons with casting flaws similar to my 82 piston. One had a single flaw and the other had two flaws in the same locations as 4 of mine (outward from the valve relief areas at an angle). Those owners were told to run them, nothing to worry about. Also on mine the material thickness of the lip around the perimeter is not uniform. What do you guys think, should I worry?

This FA 65 was flown hard for ten years. It was my go to engine and was on about ten different planes. The last plane was an Ultrasport . Then it sat for twenty years. I took it apart and found the crank bent ,The connecting rod damaged beyond repair. I rebuilt the carb after soaking it in an ultrasound machine. I ordered all new gaskets and bearings . I got a new connecting rod and streightened the crankshaft. Still need a new truturn prop nut. But it fired up and ran like new .

hey guys, I thought I would show you my regulators I got to control siphoning on my upside down/downside up Saito 100 and 115,, the regulators are OS Heli regulators, these babies are slick..

note the banjo bolt, this banjo bolt is from an OS 61FX/91FX remote needle valve, the banjo bolt's threads (1/4x32) are the same as the threads on the OS Needle Valve Housing.. see below in the engine photos how the OS Needle Valve Housing holds the Regulator to the OS Carbs,,,

I will drill out the banjo bolt's center hole .016" larger from the bottom and tap it for a 3.5x 6mm threads to install a Fuel hose barb. the hose from this barb will go to the Saito carb (s)..
then for each regulator mount, I will take 1/2" x 1/4" aluminum stock and drill a 7/32 hole and tap for 1/4x32 threads so I can screw the banjo nut to the mount. the banjo bolt will hold the regulator to the mount.. I will bolt the regulator's mount to the engine mount.
to lighten the 1/2" wide aluminum stock I will have to mill down it's width some or mill holes in it.

it will be a couple weeks before I start on it, cause I have to order the taps and drills, and I want to order some stronger aircraft quality aluminum stock.
I know-I know, you guy are thinking I should have started long ago on it, but I tell you, I work better when time get's short,,,,, got to order fuel too..

Jim

That looks familiar. I think there was a similar conversion here or perhaps another site. For some reason, Greg K comes to mind.Maybe it was you ???

Pretty interesting conversion.
Have you had problems running those engines inverted in the past?

Gary, some 2 or 3 months ago you and I talked about this in PMs,, no, I have not had siphoning problems (to add I have not yet flown my Saitos), but I have read whereby many people have had siphoning problems with their inverted 4 strokes, and some of those were here on the Saito page. some people say they start their engines with the plane upside down, then once it's running good they pick the plane up and turn it right-side up, that's not for me, plus I like the idea of having the regulator, I would like it get 2 more, one for my Saito 100T and another one other for my K&B 100

I have 5 saitos and an OS FS all mounted inverted and have never experienced siphoning. In one case the tank centerline is 3/4" above the spray bar, still no problems. I fill the tank with the throttle closed, don't over prime and use an electric starter.

More: When filling a dry tank from the previous day's flying session I'll plug the exhaust and flip the engine over 4 times with the throttle wide open. After the first start of the day no more priming and between flights I keep the throttle completely closed.

that's the hobby right there, I have seen it happen many times> what happens to some does not happen to others..

I first ordered one regulator for my OS 70 Heli engine, it's a bolt on fit so I figured why not try it, then I bought the Saito FA 100.. LOL then I bough the 115 from my fiend Garry, I got the regulators for a better price than listed, the Towers listed price is $115 for just the regulator. but if you bought the OS 50 Heli engine conversion you get the $140 three needle carb and regulator for only $90, of course now the conversion's price has gone back up to $240, so now I have 2 brand new $140 three needle 50 Heli 40L carbs to sell cheap.

sorry I screwed up, had to edit
Jim
