Can you substantiate that claim?

OS's philosophy at the time was that the four cycle was a ''Sunday'' type engine.

Not that there is anything wrong with that, being a Sunday only flier.
Now I will have a problem defining "Sunday Flier"!

P.S.
My apologies to Seinfeld.

RE: Club FOX!
I'd be more concerned that there wasn't a viable US manufactured pattern engine other than maybe the custom built Lee Custom K&B 61. The AMA kind of shot our home grown engine manufactures in the foot.

Maybe. But that wasn't my point. The moderators have edited my last responses to the point that all context was lost.
As this is their site I guess that is fine. But as my name is on the account they should have the courtesy to leave an editorial notice!

I admit I was trying to stir up the pot with my last comment. If there is any forum where you can and should make a comment like that, it would be in this one. Fox has remained faithfully American through the years and if anybody deserves solid and dedicated support by the American hobbyists, it would be them.

I am one of those, I use their fuel, glow plugs and have about 20 of their engines. I much prefer a 10,000 to 12.000 rpm engine to a 100 gozillion rpm engine. Charles Thacker who seems to be the day in and day out boss at Fox also loves his Saito .80.

RE: Club FOX!
One of what?
Fox has always had engines that made very good torque. In the case of the long stroke Eagle II, III and IV they could also breath at higher rpm. This is because as the stroke gets longer the port area in our sleeve timed engines gets larger for the same timing.
The Saito is a fine sport engine!

Konrad

RE: Club FOX!
It was odd that the Fox 1.20 ran best around12k to 13K rpm. My MVVS 1.20 runs best at about 8K rpm. These are both 20cc opposed flat twin two cycle engines. This is a rare example of a Fox engine not liking to run slow. The Fox 40Q is another that comes to mind.

I'm just now getting started with Fox engines, so I can't claim much. I don't have Saito's, Enya's, or YS engines. I know they are good, but I don't have that kind of $$ to spend. Most of my engines are the cheap stuff, and I always try to see how cheap I can go.

Now I'm not cost driven, but rather value driven! That is why I loved the Fox when I flew glow.

Admittedly, cheaper doesn't mean better value. But as I get started in this hobby, I think that you can get value without spending a bunch of money. I see my fellow club members blindly buying a certain brand of engine (brand name omitted to avoid a conflagration) simply because everybody else is buying the same.

Marketing can be so dangerous!
So can the PC movement, to the point that nobody dares say anything for fear of offending some OEM! This tends to impede the free flow of knowledge!

Konrad,
I don't think that, but a very few people, would know what variation .78 engine they had. You would need to identify the different variations for us so that others would know what to look for.
heck i cannot tell you what my .78 variation is. My .78 started life with a dual plug head and later after I had to do a rather radical landing onto a paved runway, I had to replace the head and they only had the single plug heads at that time. Mine was a relatively early model as it used to have the exhaust throttle baffle on it. I had removed the baffle to use a muffler.

What model of 0.78 do you have? The performance changed significantly though out the production life of the engine.

Well, if it has muffler tabs it is a late 70's or later. If the carb look like Earls then she is from the late 70's or earlier. If the carb barrel moves back and forth (in and out) she has the Mk X carb and is from the early 80s or newer.

thanks

If it is a older baffle plate piston design, the idle bar plugs are best. It was the nature of the baffled engines, in that there tended to be larger fuel droplets that could cause the glow plug to cool off at low speeds, so they put on a idle bar to help keep the fuel from cooling off the glow plug coil.
Now on the old dual plug engines, one glow plug is a short reach plug and one is a long reach plug. Generally the glow plug closest to the intake port is right over the top of the piston's baffle plate, so you can't use a idle bar plug in it, it has to be a short standard plug.

What Earl said is good.
Now there is a bit more to glow plug selection. Do a search for glow plugs. Also let us know what type fuel you are using. The later Foxes for the most part like low or no nitro fuels. And all Foxes like fuels with 100% castor oil preferably more than 20% oil total oil content.
All the best,
Konrad
