What source do you use for Castor? I've looked at what's availabe from our local drug mart, but don't know it that's applicable.

Sig Castor oil works good. Bakers AAA Degummed is good too.
Now the pharmacy castor oil would work, but it has to be plain, unflavored, pure castor oil with no additives. Some brands at the pharmacy add stuff to it. The pharmacy castor oil is degummed too.
Oh yeah, Klotz also sells BeNol Castor oil which also works good too.

What is nice is you can buy it in larger amounts than the quart bottles everyone else sells.

Iget my castor from the Wal Mart pharmacy in little 4oz bottles whenever Ifeel the need for just one gallon of break in fuel. Imake certain it is unflavored and degummed variety and it works fine for about $2.50. Otherwise Iget it from SIG when Ineed more than just a quick little bottleOlube, it would be very expensive to mix a gallon of fuel at $2.50 a 4oz bottle.
Pharm grade is required to list its ingredients.

Jeffie,

Pharmacy castor is not degummed.  It is better than that!  It never had the gum in it to begin with.  Degummed castor is made from the left overs from the first and second pressing. Because this may have a small amount of ricin toxin it cannot be used for pharmacy castor. You should only use first pressing castor which has no gum.

Why not use fuels with a high oil and castor content for the life of the engine?

I just purchased a gallon of fuel from the LHS with 5% nitro, 11% castor, and 11% synthetic lube (I think it is labeled as PowerMaster CL). I plan on using this fuel to run my Fox 74 Eagle 4. I do not know the state of run-in for this engine since I bought it from the RCUniverse Buy-Sell site, but it has been run previously.

Would I be ok to run it with this fuel? Or should I add some more castor oil? I have a small bottle of pharmacy castor (pure, no additives) that I purchased 4 years ago and has been in airtight storage. If I need to add more castor, can I use this old castor I have? If so, how much should I add?

I liked PowerMaster fuel. 22% total oil is great. 50% of that as castor is fine. For a ringed engine this is more than adequate! Now an engine with a lapped steel sleeve and iron piston, I'd insist on 100% castor for break in.

Ok, I still have to do more work on the airframe. But when I'm done with that I will fire up the 74 on the ground and see what happens.

By the way, the fuel cost me $13/gallon. Not bad compared to what others are screaming about price-wise.

I think a lot of users became spoiled with running 15% or even 20% nitromethane content fuel. so they sort of expect they always have to.
It is a extra money maker for the stores and manufacturers though.
I only break out the higher nitro content fuels when I have a need for it. Which isn't really all that often nowadays.

I think the last time I used 20% was when I had some ASP .61 four stroke engines I was working on, and they didn't run well on 5%. At the time all I had was 5% and a old jug of 20%. The engines ran on the 20% really well. So I assume the engines would run well on 15% to 20% fuel.

Oh yeah, the Fox hawk 60 is one of my favorite engines. Some of them can take a long time to break in and try your patience and use up a lot of fuel in the process too. But they can be real screamers and can really rev up spectacularly. It is a awesomely scary experience to have a .60 turning 21,000 rpms on the ground. Plus they aren't really much larger than the modern large case 50's, 52's or 55 engines either. I am thinking about running one again on that new Hangar 9 Jackal speed plane.

these pop up on ebay from time to time too. There is a guy on ebay "Sheldon Hobbies" that is selling the Fox aluminum motor mounts for the Fox Hawk 60 too.

Check out the paragraph dealing with propeller selection. yeah 25,000 RPMs, and this was in 1976 too.

here are mine, as leftover from my pattern days

Back in the 1960's the Fox 15X with the racing mods was capable of 30,000 plus RPMs. I used them when I was first getting into Quarter Midget 15 racing way back when. At first I simply used a control line engine with the racing parts. After a race, I would flip the plane inverted and wait for the engine to quit. I was using a fixed fuel pickup. the RC systems were larger and heavier then, so trying to get more than two channels in a small 15 plane was almost a exercise in futility. Later I tried the RC carb version and it worked well too. But for a heavy 15 size QM plane, I had to run a larger prop than the little tiny 5.5x7 prop, so the RPMs were down to around 16,000 to 20,000 or so. I ran a bladder fuel tank with the RC engine and used the throttle to just kill the engine. The bladder would flood the engine and kill it. A controline speed racer was about the only thing capable of running the little itty bitty prop. The speed planes typically needed about 10 to 30 laps to get airborne.

I bought a Fox Eagle 74 muffler from Sheldon Hobbies. I had a good experience, super fast shipping.

I thought I would mention it again here in this thread about Fox engines and instruction manuals for them.
But if you need a instruction sheet or manual, they have them here: http://web.archive.org/web/200505100...com/index.html

Most of them offer an HTML version and a PDF version. Some of the HTML's don't have the pictures, but I think all of the PDF versions do, so try using that one.

Ok, when you first go to the web site. You'll see a "Owners Manuals" in the left menu selection window pane. Also on the right window pane you will see a "Owner's Manual" link to click on as well.
That takes you to the list of Fox engine manuals. You then click on the one you are interested in. You'll then be presented with the HTML online version. At the top left of the screen you will see a PDF file link that you can click on to download the manual in a PDF format.

Unfortunately the original company for the website had gone away (out of business?). Someone was lucky enough to archive the website to save it for us. But many of the pictures were lost though. I think we had some people discuss these head button mods in this thread here someplace further back. i remember reading about it someplace.

I think they were mostly discussing the fox .74 engine head buttons a while back though.
here is one old thread on them: http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_38...tm.htm#3808309
or
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_32...tm.htm#3552362
or
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_26...tm.htm#2992414

now Ajcoholic has done these head button changes before.
here is a thread where he mentions it and has a pic or two posted still

Default RE: Club FOX!

I need your help guy's.

I have 2 FOX Eagle 60, one is the older Mk1 and it's so sweet.
In that one I have a Fox miracle plug 80/20 FAI fuel and it runs on a 11x7,5 or a 12x6

But the newer Mk4(I think) from 1989 is the problem child, it was NIB and I broke it in on the stand with 4 10oz tanks, I use the same plug, fuel and prop as the Mk1.
I put it in my engine test bed(RCM Trainer) and it is pinging and going lean in the air, I make it real rich and it wont fly.
So after 6 tanks of 80/20 fuel I remove the head, and ist full of soot and carbon.

My K&B 61 with 45 tanks of fuel is much cleaner.

The carb is a Mk X, and I have no trouble with tuning the engine.

Could it be the head button?
It has real high compression and it kicks back a lot, when I'm starting it, I don't use a starter.

If I use a colder plug it's harder to set a low idle.

Thanks.

P.S It runs so good on the bench, but once it unloads in the air it's pinging and getts to hot and looses alot of power and sometimes quit.
