The Steen's "C" was a petroleum based synthetic, as many synthetics still are.
Sadly, this is very true. Many oils being marketed as synthetic today are not true synthetic but highly refined petroleum products. The oil companies put a lot of pressure on the API to remove any distinction between true synthetics and these highly refined petro products. As a result, oils listed as synthetic probably aren't built from the ground up and still retain many of the undesireable aspects of the petro base stocks they use. They ARE better than the older technology petro oils, but are in no way equal in performance to the true synthetic oils.
