Tower muffler keeps coming apart!
I have a Tower muffler on my Irvine 46 and the whole muffler keeps coming loose. Not that the muffler is coming loose from the engine, but the 3 piece's of the muffler. Do you guys have any tips on how to fix this other than just tightening the bolts down? I'v tried tightening them but it only last for about 5 minutes in flight!

Are you using a nut on the screw? If i remeber right, my Tower 75 uses a 4mm nut on the screw. I went to the hardware store and got another one to use as a locknut.

Yes I'm using the nut that came with the muffler. Theres a large screw that gets tightened down then the nut that goes on.

Ok I will try the double nut idea. I Just took the muffler apart and was wondering if I should add some type high temp. sealent when I mate the parts back together? Also should I use loctite on the screws and nuts? If so what type do I use blue or red? Thanks for the replies!

Hi Gang,
I have three tower mufflers, and have had these problems myself. I use Hi Temp Loctite to seal each section. Then I coat the threads of the screw with hi temp Loctite and tighten everything up. I also use double nuts on the end of the screw. If your muffler is used, before you try to seal everything up, biol the disassembled muffler in antifreeze for at least 10 minutes to thuroughly clean any oil residue from the inside. Then wipe it all down inside and our with an alcohol soaked rag and let it dry. Then you will have a great seal and it wont come apart.
Have fun

I don't have a Tower muffler, but with all my mufflers, I usually seal them with a high temp silicone type sealant and tighten it down with the supplied screw/nut. I think it also cuts down vibration between the joints which in turn may cause loosening. I never had any problems with them coming apart. It also helps prevent oil seepage on the muffler joints. Hope this helps...

3M's Weatherstrip Adhesive seems to work fair on 46 size motors. It will even seal the motor/muffler joint and any seam in muffler. I first thought it would burn off but it doesn't.

I have a Tower 75 that lost the lock nut at the field. As a temporary fix, I tightened the long bolt and used a wheel collar as a lock nut. Since it has yet to come loose again, the collar has been a permanent fix. I'm going to leave it on. Why fix something that is not broke?

Thanks for the tips guys. I went ahead and added another nut to the back half to keep first nut from coming loose but the muffler screw didn't have enough threads to hold good and I ended up striping the threads right off the screw! The first one is still holding good, I might just dab some locktite or epoxy on it to keep it from coming loose again.

I had the same problem with my friends tower trainer that came with the 46 engine and that tune pipe type muffler.
Just put some loctite, let it set and you won't have that problem any more

I have resorted to using lockwire looped around the muffler to make sure when it does come loose I retain the parts. More recently, I have not had a problem because I torque the jam nut on and then brad the end of the screw. Keeps the nut from coming off and if done right will hold all the parts nice and snuggly together.
I have gone more and more toward four stroke engines and do not have the problem anymore.
Cheers,
Chip
