Are Enya engins still made? I can not find them. I had my first one fail after about 300 hours of use. I had a conn rod snap. It was a grand engine.

I just ordered some gaskets from Ken Enya for a .60x ,The charge was only $4.95 with shipping! It only took a few days to get. Of cores it was very light so that's why the shipping was so cheap. If you find the engine prices to high try ebay I got a .45 TV BB from the early 80's for only $41.50 and it had never seen fuel!

I have only ever owned a few Enyas. This has been simply because they are not generally available where I am.

My first was an Enya 15 back in the 70s. It seemed to take an age to run in but once it had it lasted well and had excellent power for our combat models. It lasted a lot longer than my OS 15.

My second was much more recently - an old well worn 46 4c. It was sold as "excellent condition, low mileage, only driven by careful old lady etc etc" but when I received it I could not turn it over at all. It was totally gummed. A bit of a dip in some hot glycol and she was off and running. She could probably do with a new ring and that may happen eventually.

Next was a 40SS plain bearing again from eBay. It is in excellent condition and I started looking round for a second one which turned up a couple of weeks ago. "Excellent compression, low hours etc etc". Rubbish. The piston could almost rattle in the bore but the rest was in good condition so I emailed Ken Enya in Japan and he was able to supply a new piston and liner for a very reasonable price. She is now like new and ready for me to run it. The total cost was still very low so I am happy.

I do not know another company that has such good support for its very high quality products. I love 'em and there are bound to be more in my shed. I think I'd like a 53 four stroke next. And then a diesel of some sort.

Love 'em ... but they are pretty rare in the UK.

I have a .46 4c, a .90 4c, and 1.20 R. Chunky and well-engineered.

I regularly get to fly one of the .40 4c diesels ... which is easily my favourite engine EVER. If only they would make some larger four-stroke diesels. I did ask the Enya bods whether they had any plans to extend the diesel four-stroke range; but the answer was "NO".

I love to hear more about why you like the diesel 4 stroke so much.

Thanks,

Well, it's frugal, quiet, modestly-powered ... but best of all, it absolutely will not stop running as long as there's a whiff of fuel available. Have flown it for many hours, now, and it has never quit.

Great sound. Tried any large props with it?

Since the 40d fourstroke has fixed compression the only way to use a larger prop is to shim the head to reduce compression and unshim it to run smaller props. Here is an Enya .25 turning a Graupner 12x5.

Yep, that's right; fixed compression limits the prop choice. We experimented until we found the prop with which the engine was happiest ... and we've stuck with that one.

Ah, makes sense.

That Enya 25D beats my Saito 45 on a similar prop. My diesels are all PAWs, but that would be a different thread.

Have you flown the Enya 25 on anything yet?

No sir Jim, I have a LT 25 close to ready for it, if somebody would tell me to get busy on it, I would.[8D]

I've been investigating my Saito .50, with a view to doing a diesel conversion.

Decided that it's impossible, using the existing head. This has a domed combustion chamber and canted valves, making it impossible for me to increase the CR. But, I could use the existing valve gear and patch a new steel head onto the existing barrel. The new head would use vertical valves, allowing more flexibility with respect to CR.

Now, a question. The Saito head has very nice bronze valve guides, which I would be minded to salvage and re-use; if possible. Have any of you chaps ever removed these guides? How did you go about the job? I imagine that heat and pressure will do the trick, but it does no harm to listen to others' experiences.

Secondly, what CR are you using on 4-stroke diesels? This question may be better directed to the diesel forum, I know.

I also concluded that a diesel conversion of low CR Saito is near impossible. Some should have enough compression as is, but my experiments with an FA-80 showed it was light on compression.

I'm pretty sure valve guides in model engines are cast in. If you have the ability to make a four stroke head I would just make new guides. I have the other problem. I have an Enya 46-4C head with worn guides and seats. I want to make new guides. It seems a fixture to bore out the old guides is going to be the toughest part. One of these days. I suppose it would be easier to just buy a head.

We had a thread over in the diesel forum a few years back. http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_90..._1/key_/tm.htm

B, this is an early high compression Saito .80, I have run it on Davis ABC fuel a couple of times, it has too much compresion, if you could get hold of one of them you could lower the compression with a shim under the cylinder if it you think it worth the trouble. I pulled the cylinder off of it the other day refinished it with 1200 degree paint from NAPA. It was pretty skinned up after 20 years of moving from plane to plane. Anyway, at about 5,000 rpm on Diesel fuel it begins to sound like a black and gold grenade. A Lavona cell would be even better if somone would make you one.

Enya makes a 1.80 (30cc) glow two-stroke engine that would be easy to convert to Diesel or gas/oil ignition.

Answer to Ed's question: Yes (how did I just notice, after 15 pages that I haven't put my 2 cents in yet? )
My first r/c engine was an Enya .29 IV-TV in 1974, which I wished I hadn't sold a couple years later. I found one on ebay a year or two ago, in great condition for less than 20 bucks!

I've got 3 .15's, the .29, a .35 and an .80 four stroke...great engines.

This is interesting because there seems to be some dispute over what should be the "correct" range of CR for these engines. I have read of people using CR in the range 16-22:1. And yet, My Enya 60 four-stroke, for instance, will just about run as a diesel ... but has a CR of just 8:1; according to Ken Enya.

I don't suppose that you know the CR of your Saito .80, Hobbsy?

Of course, the compression ratio is varied in proportion to the amount of ether in the fuel, the size of the propeller needed to fly the model the best and many other things. Me guesses that that is why the two-stroke Diesel engine makers produce their engines with a variable compression feature. Yeah, I know. Which ear? (smile)

What about making a four-stroke Diesel with a variable deck height mechanism (I'm visualizing a Saito cylinder jug)? The length of the pushrods problem that will surface could be circumvented by using electric solenoids to open and close the valves at the proper time, making deck height not a factor for proper valve operation.
