Bo, my Saito .80 and Saito 1.50 are both early high compression versions, from memory one has 14.4 to 1 and the other 15.6 but I don't know which is which. Someone once post that an .80 that Clarence Lee tested had 13.8 to one, I am not "expurter enuff" to cc them. That 8.1 to 1 is probably corrected for port timing.

CR for diesels does vary. Effective CR, not the quote geometric CR is what makes things happen. In general though, model engines are all the same. Measuring CR of a Saito isn't easy. The typical method is to put the piston at TDC and fill the combustion chamber with oil. it's fairly easy to trap air and get a false figure. I've not measured CR of Saito engines. The OS, Enya, and Sanye four strokes I have measured have been 7-8:1. Most four stroke engines have no squish to speak of and have a hot exhaust valve to initiate combustion. I find each four stroke needs a slightly different setup to run as diesel.

I am also a long-time user/fan of Enya Engines. I have read most of this thread and I hope I am not repeating something that was already said. I spoke to an MRC representative at Toledo last month and asked him why they quit marketing Enya Engines. He deferred me to a fellow who was standing nearby who was the former MRC "marketer" for Enya Engines. The answer was simply that the demand for Enya engines was low. And Enya, who handmakes their engines, would have infrequent distribution of their engines because they would produce so low of a number (he mentioned that they would make a production run of about 200 engines of a particular size). In addition, the decrease in the dollar and susequent rise of the Yen, not many people were willing to pay more than $225 dollars for a 60-size engine. This is just my opinion, but as an R/C consumer if we use a quality product we have to be willing to keep paying for it. We can't always go for the bargain product. Back in 1981 I paid $50 for an Enya 35. In 1999 I paid $109 for an Enya 50 CX. Today I could purchase an Enya 60 from Japan for around $240. Would I? Heck yes. Even though a Chinese made Evolution goes for $100 and whatever? Heck yes.

I Love them too. Bought a .60x in 1980 for about $89.00. Still going strong! I also picked up a .40 ss bb for $69.00 just recently from a hobby shop. Was lucky enough to find a .45 BB TV on ebay for $41.50. The guy didn't know what he had,You could tell it had never been run. ( : The .45 is actually lighter than the modern .40.I'm putting the .45 in a Great planes Fun One. Look on ebay people buy up estates for little money and sell things they know little about. Also found an HB .40 never, ran with a perry carb,$21.50! Super running engine. I agree it's a shame we can't get a supplier here for the Enya's. Some one on a review said it best ( OS is the Toyota of R/C engines and Enya is the Accura)

Just stopped in to report I am a double Enya engine owner now. no not a twin.

Ipicked up a nice Enya .60-4C . Icleaned it up and ran it the other day but Idont have a muffler so Ididnt take a power reading since no tank pressure had me concerned about it going lean.
Iwonder if the crankcase pressure could be used if a T fitting was installed for excess pressure relief?
Anyway it runs really smooth and starts really easy although it seems a bit heavy.
Any advise from the more experienced members?

I don't believe those required any tank pressure and came with a straight pipe.

I didn't use any E. pressure on my .80 4C either Jeff...just a short header...doesn't appear to need it.

Friend of mine never used any with his 1.20 4C either...actually, he didn't even use a header, because he couldn't. Part of the exh. port threads were broken out in a previous crash. He then put the engine in a G.P. DR-1 Triplane. The right out of the exh. valve blat sound reminded us of a full scale rotary...[8D]

Just picked up a 2nd hand ENYA 11CX Diesel. What a delight. Looks like it has only been test run. Really good compression.

I tip my hat to ENYA for keeping diesel variants of some of their smaller engines available.

I actively run a .40fs diesel, a .60fs, a .46fs and .90fs. None uses tank pressure and all four are very reliable. The aged .60fs is great. Mine has run on glow, petrol and diesel, so far. Later this month, it's going flying on Ullswater (wx permitting).

I also have a 1.20R, but haven't run it ... though I confess to fondling it the other night. It's very, very nice.

I have a 1.20R also, but I also have a VT240. Now there's an engine worth fondling.

Ran the 60-4C today. What a champ!!

I used a large prop to keep the rpms down since it hasnt run in probably a decade . Itried to search but couldnt come up with a manual for it, any ideas?
What prop is everybody using on theirs? Ihave heard they like rpms but Iam leery of overrevving my 4 strokes. 10,000 is my self imposed target rpm static.
Thanks team!!!

Enya recommend 16 x 4, 14 x6, 13 x6, 11 x 8 or 12 x6 .

I am running a 12 x 6 at the moment, on my 60-4C, but a 13 x 6 would probably be a little sweeter. Mine is running straight fuel and is happy enough.

They are good engines.

There is very little in the manual that you would need to know. Valve clearances, cold, are 2 to 4 thou. That's about it, really.

The Enya 60 & 80-4C are among my favorite engines. The previous post with the prop recommendations hit it on the head. Also a 12x7 and a 13x5 works well too. I just run 13x6 props on the pair myself. The 80-4C is actually a .74, derived from the .60. Both are super sweet engines.

Guys,

Just found this thread while searching for tuning instructions for an Enya 49. I cannot seem to get the thing to run correctly. Only way it will stay running is full throttle. Running Omega 10%. Can not get the transition from idle to full throttle correct. Idle is OK while on the ground. Has plenty of power at full song. Cut back to anywhere near half throttle it will run 4 or 5 minutes then starts to sputter. Slowly advance to full it might catch up it might die. Nail the throttle it dies. I have dismantled the carb for extensive cleaning to no avail. This engine caused a crash on another trainer I had it on. I have had so many dead sticks, I put an old K&B 40 back on it. Barely gets it off the ground but at least I can land with the engine running.

If any of you have any ideas or a link to where there is instructions on tuning this engine please post it. Conventional tuning doesn't seem to work.

The postman just delivered a .61CXR today.

This is the ringed version of the .61CX and it looks absolutely beautiful. I need a rag to mop up all that quality that is oozing out of it.

Bummer, just go here and ask, Mr. Enya will send you the instructions.

Deadsticks do not crash airplanes, unprepared pilots crash airplanes. The pilot is responsible for how the engine performs.

As far as the engine is concerned, gloplug selection and condition can make all of the difference in perfprmance.

The Enya .49 two-stroke is a revver. Don`t be tempted to load it down with a large 3d prop.

Good luck and let us know how you fare.

YEEEHA! Just won a brand new in the box .60IIIB on Fleabay for 47 bucks! I already have one that I paid a little more for last year that is not even broke in yet, but I couldn't resist! Now looking for the strap on muffler...

Put a 12X8 APCon the 60-4C and it ran 9200 rpm, impressive. Ithink Ifound my combo. And on just regular old SIg 15% fuel.
It idles beautifully and the air bleed carb is so easy to tune it is embarrasing. Why dont more manufacturers make simple air bleed carbs that actually work instead of trying to make a more complicated twin needle that they screw up?

Enya four-strokes were designed to rev up, according to the early reviews and manufacturer's information. Imposing a 10k rpm limit is being ultra conservative, but it sure won't hurt anything.

Stumblebum, I am surprised no one responded directly to your running problem with your .49. I do think that your issues will reside within a standard tuning regimen. Did you notice the glowplug color? Does it seem to die hot? If it is newish than I remind that Enyas are tighter tolerance than most. You need to do a standard ultra rich run-in and than from that starting point slowly lean it down from a "4-cycle" sound (it literally is firing every other time even though mechanically a two stroke), to the point where it just starts to run a higher RPM. Run it just lean of "4-cycle" for a couple tanks on the ground (I shut it off half way...cool a bit and restart it). The plug is your main cue to settings. You may have too hot or too cold a plug, also. If it runs as long as you say, than fuel tank position may not be a problem. I would assume (if I were you) that the engine is fine and that it is operator error. Start rich and slowly get the main needle leaner. If you have an airbleed screw then you open it up (counter clockwise) to lean the low RPM response a bit (very sensitive...go no more than a quarter turn between adjustments). I hope I helped...but then I may have confused you? The Japanese instructions are actually interpreted poorly into english. It is tough to go by their instructions actually (one MAJOR problem with their import into U.S.). Good luck, and get back to us with some more info?

Actually what I'd like to know is what's an Enya .49? I've never heard of one and at first I thought it should have read .049 until I saw he was going to replace it with a K&B 40. Now I know Enyas are good but........

The Enya .49 was one of the first schneurle ported Enya two-stroke engines of the seventies. It was considered a hot sport engine by the standards of the day, IIRC.
