At least we aren't having castor vs synthetic arguments anymore.
I trust my tuning but synthetic still burns to ash too easily for me to trust it without some castor protection. Just my thoughts about engine protection, etc. Castor has some downsides to it, but nothing I can't live with
as a side note, MECOA recommends 50% Castor for their HP 61 and 120, I don't know about their other engines

Hi Dave, because to blw Castor's higher flash point is like buying insurance.. I have an old friend from my teens that was good enough of a mechanic to be on Suzuki's MX Team, he told me that there is no better oil for a 2 Stroke than Castor, it simply protects the best, but it has that gumming effect and leaves residue everywhere

Jim, 2 strokes are the only kinds of motorcycles I ever owned way back in the 70's. You're right about the heat because those things would very hot. Plus, you have to burn out the carbon every day too or they would run like crap until you did. I had 2 bikes that got holes burned through the piston crowns.

Some guys came up with the idea that if you had two sparkplug holes in the head you could run a cold a normal temp plug in one hole and a hot plug in the other hole. If you fouled a plug you could just switch the wire to the hot plug and keep going. More than one guy burned a piston that way. The too hot plug still ran too hot even though the spark plug wire was not attached to it.
I switched my MAICO to Mercury Outboard oil and never fouled another plug, Castrol R would plug it before 50'.

in my dirt bikes "in the mid 70s to early 80s" I would only run Castol R, never a fouled plug, but, there was one shop that sold "Full Bore" 2 stroke oil, I don't know what it was made from but it sure did out perform the Castol R in such a notable way, but once the shop sold the oil they had they never bought more, it was a low end shop that only sold a very low number of Bikes, maybe 10 or 15 (Suzuki)

I have not posted here in a long time. I purchased an OS 15LA from Hobbsy a couple of years ago and installed it on a Hobby King ministik plane. I must say it is an amazing engine, so easy to use with more power than other 15-size engines that are heavier. Plus the muffler is very quiet. Thanks Dave!

I have had no interaction with that engine, the only thing I can tell you is that with all the OS engines I have had, they usually tune around 1&1/2 turns on the high Needle, that is for both Heli and Plane engines, as for my 61FX Plane engine, it's Idle tune's at about 3/4 turn from fully close
I hope that helps
