Yes, many do not understand that an engine on the ground turning the same prop at a higher speed is both more torque and more power. The top HP comes in play only when the plane is flying and the prop unloads, then the required torque decreases, but the engine that maintains the torque better will spin that prop faster.

Ed,

Speaking of Enyas, did you ever get your 60XLF-4 GP?

The Merlin was built by Packard under license from Rolls during WWII and used in several planes including the Mustang. Packard had even refined the design by making soome of the external plumbing internal to the casting creating a more durable engine with regards to being shot at.

Then it's still a Rolls Merlin. Remington Rand made Government 1911 pistols as did Union Switch and Signal but they were still Colt 45's.

"2 cycle vs 4 cycle" ....... Hate to say but there's no such thing.
Why do Americans get confused with this? Every engine going has 1 cycle. intake, compression, power and exhaust. What you mean to say is 2 stroke vs 4 stroke.

Sorry to be annal but it's just the wrong way to say it.

Kevin,

I believe you should get your terms in order...

[link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Two-stroke_cycle]Two-cycle[/link].

[link=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otto_cycle#The_Otto_cycle]Four-stroke[/link].

The terms 'cycle' and 'stroke' are being used interchangeably, everywhere.

Yes, they are being used interchangably, which is incorrect. The marketing folks messed this up long ago in the US (don't know about anywhere else) and this is why we Americans use two cycle and four cycle instead of the correct term, two-stroke and four-stroke.

Of course, we Americans are pretty much illiterate anyway - even the college grads. When is the last time you heard anyone pronounce veterinarian correctly? Everyone says vetrinarian instead.

A cycle is one complete combustion process. The two-stroke utilizes one up and one down stroke for a complete cycle. The four-stroke needs four complete strokes for one cycle. But you know this, I'm sure.

Kevin Bell- It's just the way we say things here. Nobody is confused. Saying it both ways is considered normal. Both terms have been used for a long time.

And one way is correct, while the other way is wrong. No "normal" with it being incorrect.

I "seen" is another favorite of mine. <G>

Just the local dialect, Ed. You ain't seen slang until you visit England! I enjoyed hearing it when I was around a lot of British folks. I know that the Germans and Dutch have their Southern dialects just like here in the U.S. I learned slang German from their 'deep south' when I was there.

Time to move on and stop criticizing how people talk in different areas of the world.

I'm not a supporter of "No child left behind" philosophy.

It is up to the elders to teach the youngsters what is and is not appropriate, Barry. I figure that if you don't make an effort to be a part of the solution, then you are part of the problem.
