I fly my Skyloop 404 off the Marymoor park grass field in Seattle. It is a low wing trike gear airplane and is fairly heavy. It has a Saito 45 on it turning 9000 with a TF 11x6. I gets off the ground reasonably well. Your high wing low wing loading trianers with a bigger engine turning 10,000 should be no problem.

The conditions at our field can vary quite a bit depending on the weather. If its been raining all week and we come out on Saturday the grass can be tall enough that we get a green film on our props. When the grass is this tall 10,000 rpm just doesn't "cut it"!! The green film has to cleaned off after about the 3d flight or it starts to affect the prop balance. Its also the reason we use 3" tall wheels as our standard. We suggest to new flyers that come out with the 2 1/2" wheels from the kit to change them for 3" Sullivan or Dubro light weights. [8D]

7000 on 1/5 HP is possible and I did it. If you look at the specs for the old Ohlsson 60, you will see that it's rated at 1/5 HP. I ran a TopFlite 14x6 on one and got just under 7000 rpm on it. It flew a Sig Kadet Senior just fine. Here is a picture of that very engine. It was modified and uses an OS 4B carb. It also ran on a straight alcohol to castor oil mix of 3 to 1. That's 25% oil.
It takes about 1/2 HP to turn a 14/6 7000 rpm. Rating means nothing, may be a typo. The Webra 25 is rated at 1.1 hp.

No pre war 60 sized engine was rated as much as 1/2 HP. The average 60 was 1/5 HP. The Ohlssons were the standard of the day up through the late 40's and 1/5 was the best they could do. I think maybe you should do a little reading on the history of the model airplane engine. The Webra is rated 1.1 at well over 18,000 rpm.

The latest OS car engines are pushing 3 HP at 38,000 rpm. That engine with the prop it would turn at that speed would do nothing on a SIG Kadet senior. It would just sit there and scream it's little heart out and go nowhere. rated HP means nothing, USABLE HP is the figure that counts.

Regarding 25 engines on a 40 size trainer, I just want to say I have seen too many newcomers crash their planes before even getting airborne, due to lack of power to get up high in a hurry. I always tell my buddies to get a powerful engine to get in the air and then throttle back. We mostly use 52-53 twostroke engines in 40 sizers and 12.25-3.75 or 12-4 props to get brisk takeoffs.

Well heck, If that's your philosophy why stop there?? Let's get a 108 or even 160. We can always throttle back. I have been an instructor for over 30 years and a 25 powered airplane that uses a 40 is not under powered. If you look back you see that the engine recommendations stated a varied size as in 25 to 40, or 40 to 60. Like I said the Falcon 56 recommended an 09 to 19.

did you get that backwards?? I was refering to 40 size planes powered by 25 engines(as was mentioned in the thread), not vice versa. 52-53 engines don`t weigh more than 40 size engines as they are made on the same size crankcase(I guess you knew that?) Do you feel that a Os 50 sx in a 40 size is overkill?? No I guess you don`t

By the way it is no philosophy, it is just common sense.[sm=lol.gif][sm=lol.gif]

You said you tell your buddies to "get a powerful engine to get in the air then powerback". I think an OS160 is a powerful engines.

It is a philosophy. Look up the word.

Ok I am going back to the original question.

Since my thread was hijacked about putting .25 motors on trainers.

Jaka- can you tell me where to get an MVVS .25?

Thanks Toes,

I think my flying will improve even more, when the wind is not drying out my contacts and making me blink like a flashing light.
It was a good time!

Racing what? Is he racing underpowered 40 size trainers
Where is this thread going? Does he do some sort of 25 class racing and wants to try the 25 engines in a bigger trainer or what?

Sorry about that, I just read the whole thread over again and realised that it was not the thread starter who was thinking of using .25 engines on .40 trainers[sm=red_smile.gif]
I`m out of here

ASmund,

We are actually racing Q25 or q500 planes with a .25 motor. It is a club racing circuit.
We are getting many people involved with this.

here are the rules, if your are interested!

thanks, it sure looks like fun. Maybe I should try to get some of my buddies into this so we too could race a bit. We are doing some freestyle racing now with what we have at hand. Several different planes and engines in a mix, it is fun too but it would be more fun if we all had the same equipment
