ST3000 problem
I'm having an ST3000 problem and just can't find a solution. The engine goes just fine early in the run but after 4 or 5 minutes if I throttle back at all the engine will flame out. It does it consistently and I've seen more than one of these engines do this. I've tried different plugs with no effect. I run Cool Power ST fuel in it but it makes no apparent difference. I don't think this is a plumbing problem. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm stuffing this engine into a 4-Star 120 but need to develop a higher level of confidence in the thing before I fly it. It had been in a Hangar 9 Edge 540 and demonstrated this problem every time I flew the thing. I'm out of ideas and thinking real hard about an OS 1.60 right now. Solutions anyone? Thanks.

RE: ST3000 problem
G'day Mate,
First off, how much oil do you run in your fuel, the large ST's like a lower percentage of oil, around 10 to 15%, after run in. 15% oil for running in, about 2 gallons to run in then lower the oil to 10 to 12%, & see how that goes.
I personally don't like ST engines, & that is why I have a 160 FX, but I know a fella in our club that has a ST 4500, & he found it was too high an oil content that caused most of his flame outs. Also make sure that the plug is NOT an ST plug, they don't seem to last very well at all, & the motor will quit, in the mid range when the plug is dying. Low speed mixture should also be as lean as possible, to heep the plug hot, idle pinch test here.

Sometimes when an engine is running really hot, and you throttle back....it will
die for no apparent reason. By the time you land it, and recover the plane, it
doesn't seem to be hot any more. This can turn in to a real head scratcher....[]
You might try another fuel....one containing castor oil, and plenty of it. I own and
operate a 3000 myself....I use Powermaster....I have good luck with it.

RE: ST3000 problem
Unlike the "big tigres", the 2300 needs 18% oil in the fuel, an OS-F plug, and 5% nitro. I have a feeling the engine is run too lean.
Look at the http://home.wanadoo.nl/pereivers/home.html article for further info. With the proper fuel, plug and carb adjustments, which with ST carbs are in the 1/32 idle needle turn range, the engine is ultra-reliable.

First the ST3000 is pre the Big Tigre fuel. 5% blend will be fine. 4 or 5 minutes screams out tank location and low tank pressure. The last resort is tune engine with 1/2 tank full. That will probably get you a little rich on full tank.
