If you pull the intake lifter, it should just pop out, you can use a pushrod to time the cam. There is a hole in the cam that you drop the pushrod into through the lifter hole. Set the crank to top dead center and drop it down.
If all the parts are from the same engine, you can disreguard the following. When you tighten down the cam housing, just start with the screws finger tight and see how the crank turns, tighten a 1/4 turn and try again. If you start to feel any roughness, IE the gears binding, you need to shim the gear housing up. I've used a soda can aluminum for a shim with good results, sand off the painted surface and clean the sharp edges. The crank should turn freely with no evidence of gear interferance.

The dot goes towards the front and the little end of the pushrods go towards the rocker arms

I was looking at a 182 that is disassembled beside me and the dot definitely goes towards the front on this engine. The side with the dot has the chamfer in it.
Edit
Zombie, Whoever wrote that piece in your club news letter was better with writing articles than they were assembling Saito's. You can see right in the second picture where he has assembled the connecting rod on the crankshaft backwards.
In these pictures you can see the chamfer in the crank end of the rod and this goes towards the crankshaft. He shows it reversed in the second assembly picture. The difference in the thickness of the wrist pin boss of three different 91 pistons I measured was not more than .004mm which is .0015". It would take digital calipers to measure this difference?
On this rod, in the pictures, the dot definitely goes towards the front

Jim:
The chamfer in the big end is the important thing - the chamfer should be against the crank shaft. All I can say is I've never seen the dot on the chamfered side. Doesn't mean it couldn't be.
Bill.

You're absolutely right that the chamfer/bevel on the rod needs to face the crank - which would be forward. But this discussion did get me to wondering a bit. So, I called Saito Service at Horizon Hobbies. Their advice is to disregard the dot completely and go by the chamfer/bevel on the rod. Seems there were rods marked both ways - which were used and sent out in assembled engines. No mention of how many.
So, it is possible to see the dot facing either way when correctly assembled.
Glad to learn this little piece of knowledge.
Regarding the pictures above - it does look like he may have the chamfer/bevel facing the wrong way. [sm=lol.gif]
