Default Super Tigre question

I've got a Super tigre G34 in my Sig Kobra which replaced an O.S. 25 LA. Two questions:

1. I've heard to ditch the stock glow plug that came with the engine and replace it. Any suggestions as to with what?

2. The Kobra is a small plane so the Super Tigre muffler slides a good distance on to the exhaust header. Most of the header is protruding into the muffler. I was wondering that with all that header tube inside the muffler if there wasn't a bit of a back pressure situation being created at full throttle. Is it worth it to trim the header tube back a bit or leave it as it is?

Thanks,
Dan

I had the same question you do just last week when I mounted my ST 51. I put the muffler along the header and made a mark on it so I would only slide it on just far enough to seal the exhaust. I had enough room so I only wanted the header to just go in enough to seal. I felt if the header went all the way in it would cause back pressure but I don't know.

I never was successful in sliding the Super Tiger muffler all the way onto the tube. The engine ran best with the muffler out as far as it would mount.

On the old Italian Super Tigers, with the genuine Super Tiger glow plug..... the plug would only last about 10 minutes.

I used OS #8 plugs in them.

I bought my first Super Tigre in 1958 and have bought many, many since then. Every one of them was great. I never, never had a Super Tigre glow plug I liked. I regarded them as nothing more than sling shot amo.

You can cut off header for more flow and use a RCLONG FOX plug.

You could relieve the muffler without hurting anything as long as you used a small prop like a 9-6. As far a Supertigre plugs go, I say don't knock it till you try it. I have had very acceptable performance with all of my Supertigres using the plug they came with, although I have found some others that are better (K&B and OS). Strangely I have also had good results with the carburetors that they come with.

A 9x6 is what I'm using now with the motor. I flew the plane on Sunday all afternoon with the stock Tigre plug and have no complaints yet with it. I went ahead and trimmed about 3/4" off the header pipe but didn't really notice much difference in the performance of the engine. After getting the low speed needle where it should be the transition problems I was having to full throttle disappeared. So far the engine really performs for only having 8-9 tanks run through it, very smooth. Made a Supre Tigre believer out of me.

Im using an early production G34H with the older style (noisy) muffler. I have been very happy with its power and reliability, its one sweet little engine. Try running a small drill up the stinger and see if that makes any difference.

Same here, although over the last decade, I've taken to using the stock ST plug as long as I can during the break-in of the ringed Tigres. Why waste a good plug when you're just going to run blubbery rich anyway? Sometimes I have to leave the DC power on, but it runs long enough to get through the really rich part of the break-in. How long is that? It depends upon the individual fit of each engine.

I'm about to bench break-in another ST G2300 with the intention of mounting my Davis Diesel conversion head as soon as I think it is broke-in enough. You should see the size of this Diesel head! <G>

Ed, I ordered a 2300 yesterday, I decided my K&B 100 Diesel conversion is a little light on size for my 12 foot TeleMaster, so I'm going to be setting it up as Diesel also. I don't have the engine or head yet. The engine should be here thursday.

Between the two of us, Bob is going to have to hire folks for a second shift at the Diesel fuel plant. <G>

Ed, we should compare notes in this thread as we do our break ins. Mine will be run on Fox 5% nitro fuel with 20% castor and a Fox Miracle plug unless a plug comes with it, then I'll use that one.

I hope that I can join you in this joint effort.

I'll be burning up some old (not real old) Sig 5% nitro fuel with 20% castor during break-in. So our results should be fairly close. I'll use either a 16x6 or a 16x8 for the initial runs.

I was using an 18x8 on my last G2300 and it handled it fine.

I'll probably fly the Dieselized version on my Giant Big Stik. That should be nice. I was thinking of using a 20x8 or 10 on it once it was Dieselized. It should be really quiet.

My 2300 arrived about 6:30 PM yesterday, I only got a chance to lift the top off of the box and take a quick peak, it and the 12 foot TeleMaster arrived together.

Good for you, Dave.

I have been wondering about the Super Tigre glow plugs. The old ones weren't useful to me. I wonder if they have changed them since they are being made in China? Some folks seem to like them now. Maybe I'm still living in the past?

I prepared it for its first run, I wrapped Teflon Plumbers tape around the muffler bolt. The two carbs show the difference between the 3000 carb (left) and the 2300 carb, they have the same throat diameter but the 2300 carb has a fat spraybar. The instructions say that the LS needle is factory set, this one was set 75% of the way across the cats eye (lean), as you can see the 3000 carb has it 50% of the way across and idles and transitions great there. I moved the 2300 LS needle to the 50% position, I did not want to cook the ring finding out that it was set too lean. The interior of the engine is prestine, as you can see I gave it a shot of Corrosion X, if there were any metal flakes in there, they would shine like stars on a clear night in the CX. The weather is foul here, wind so strong it's making my shop creak and groan.

Thats an extremely interesting observation of the spraybars; I would've thought that ST would just punch out a large style carb to cover the giant scale stuff from the 1.4 on up; apparently not so.

Roary, I have four of the big carbs like on the left, one has a straight hole below the barrel, no divergent like the two in the pic. and one has a taller intake above the barrel.

I found the same thing with the spray bar in the carb for my G34, way too lean. Ibacked it out to about 50% and adjusted from there. Idle and transition through midrange to full throttle is beautiful now. I thought they were supposed to be factory adjusted???

1) I like the Fox RC long plug in my ST's

2) I have not noticed any difference in performance with the muffler full in or full out on any of my ST's( I've got 2 34's, 3 GS40's
and a G51)
