Default Saito FA 30

Hi !

Does anybody use this engine and what are your experiences with it ?

I wanna use it for WWI aircombat 1:8 and low Nitro , maybe 7% or lower .

In Germany we don't want to use a prop with more than 4" pitch , but what is the right diameter for this engine at this pitch ?

Rolf, I think I can get you in the ball park, mine turns a Graupner 10x5 at 10,100 rpm on 10% nitro, I would think a 11x4 would be a good choice.

Corected tipergraficle earor.

Sorry Asmund, I corrected it. You're right, it would rev a whole lot.

Hello; I have a Zingali 10 x 6 three blade pn my Pixie bipe on the Saito 30. It turns 9200, and provides plenty of thrust for the draggy biplane. I wanted teh three bladed prop for scale realism. I have used 10 x 5 and 11 x4 on Surpass 26's, and a 10 x 4 on my HP 21 4 stroke.

The 30 is just too nice of engine to discontinue. I am wanting one now. What is the larges plane this little engine will pull. I am thinking about a trainer, kaos, stick,or more like a ultra stick plus kind of plane.

Hi !

Thank you for sharing your experiences !

@ Hobbsy

I think i'll go with you after breakin .

@ Jetpilot

I don't make the rules for german WWI combat , but they want limited speed for more realism for speed and climbing during fight , not so fast as it is in WWII combat .

@ all

More experiences are welcome .

Hi Rolf

It's after midnight there. You should be getting your beauty sleep. I responded to your same question on RC Network a few minutes ago.

The Saito 30 that has been referred to in this thread has been the 30S.

The earlier 30's had open rockers.

Have no clue as to what the "C" is for? Horizon often tacks on designations to Saito's that are hard to figure and/or meaningless like 150H for example.

When the AD people were writing the AD, the Saito example they were looking at was a "C" production sequence engine?

But the last batch of 30's sold by Horizon had a production sequence of "E" stamped on top of the right lug.

Hi w8ye !

There must be a reason , why the SC-version will cost 35 Euros more , than the SH-Version .

SC=210 Euro
SH =175 Euro
GK=185 Euro

Currently Saito just has a 30S and 30S (GK)

The "GK" stands for the black one with the gold valve covers. (Golden Knight)

There is no SC on the Saito (Japan) site.

Barry, my favorite kit for the .30 is a Sig LT 25, I add a nose gear and bolt on wing to them.

Hobbsy, hmmm. A friend of mine says that everybody should have a LT-40. Maybe the 25 would be a good kit to build. Maybe clip the wings and take out almost all of the dihedral? Shorten and widen the ailerons? Or, leave it stock? The nice thing about a top mounting wing is that you could easily build an extra wing if you wanted to experiment with new ideas.

The LT25 is almost as big as a LT40. It is just built extremely light.

I would put the little .30 on an Eaglet 50. I've got an old one with a pre-Surpass 40 (probably way less power then the .30) and I love flying it. Gathers a crowd at the field. I had an LT25 with a Magnum .30 four stroke and didn't really like it too much. The plane is so big and creates so much drag. It was just too slow and unresponsive for my taste, I got boared real quick.

Putting together a Global T6 with a Magnum .30 now. Should do well despite the flat bottem wing. Could not resist the price of either at a time when my budget is thin, (kids almost ready for college).
