ELECTRIC TO GLOW CONVERSIONS?
Now I know that the latest craze among modelers is to take a perfectly reasonable plane and make it buzz like a hornet. I however like the grunt of glow and am currently swimming upstream, I want to find a good electric aerobat (prefferably 3D), and stick a real engine in the nose. Any suggestions?

Awesome, there are people love glow power! I want to hear about all of your elec to glow swaps, keep it coming in. BTW, anyone heard about the E-FLITE Extra 260 3D ARF? the pics show a pretty light airframe, but plenty of room for the goods. let me know what you think[8D]

If you hack off the the electric mount and epoxy a firewall made of plywood flush to the existing one toss some triangular pieces between that and the fus sides I would say you have it made, the rest of it looks pretty strong you can always put in a couple of stringers in the fus. if you feel better almost no weight the of course engine mount bolted to the new wall
you will plenty of access to put in blind nuts to the back of the wall for the mount, get out the dremel martin
have done this a couple of times you may have to chop the battery tray to get in a tank then just use some light ply at the right height for the tank

RE: ELECTRIC TO GLOW CONVERSIONS?
what if two hardwood rails were to go through the firewall into the radio comp. that would give a solid mounting surface and put the engine out far enough to reach the front of the cowl! I tried this on a mini funtana and it only added .75 oz!
Do you think that this plane wil be able to do flatspins, blenders, waterfalls, or high alpha knife-edge? Can anyone out there give me an insight into how this bird flies? then again it is a new release, oh well.[sm=confused.gif]

RE: ELECTRIC TO GLOW CONVERSIONS?
I just completed structural work on an E-Flite Mini Funtana that I put a Mangum .15 in. The mods are pretty straight forward, the nose was reinforced, the wings were glued on, and the battery compartment was converted to hold a 2 oz sullivan flex-tank. The engine is mounted on two 1/2" rails. The setup is pretty light (little under 30 oz.), can't wait to see it fly.

RE: ELECTRIC TO GLOW CONVERSIONS?
Just finished my latest project, a Mini Funtna conversion to a Magnum .15. It flies really good, suprisingly different from the electric version. The elec version was kind of twitchy, where the new model is a great pattern flier!. it will do precice aerobatics as smoothly as my twist. Has anyone gotten this plane to flatspin? I can't get it to flatten out and decend, it always wants to drop a wingtip.
Possible future projects:
- Great Planes ElectriFly Super Sportster EP ARF 48"
- Great Planes E Performance Series EP YAK 54 3D ARF 41"
- Sig E-Force Electric 3D ARF
- E-Flite P-38/F-5E Lightning 400 ARF
- E-Flite Cap 232 BP ARF
- E-Flite Ultra Stick 25e ARF
Some are impractical, but cool. should make for good brainstorming. Feel free to add more to the list, and I want to hear about YOUR conversion!

RE: ELECTRIC TO GLOW CONVERSIONS?
Man, this thread has warmed the heart of an old man who feels like glow power is going the way of the dinosaur. Every model airplane magazine I see has mostly electric powered planes and even old standbys that are being powered that way.
I would love to see any 'electric plane' that was made especially to be electric and that was converted to glow power. This is awesome!

Maidend a Ultra Stick 25E yetarday with a ASP 25 on the nose, realy nice plane.
The next one is a Mini Ultra Stick with a 15 should be a blast.
A freind of mine has a OMP Katana EP with a ASP 15, much better plane than the E version, will fly totaly unlimited 3D
Regards
Dries

RE: ELECTRIC TO GLOW CONVERSIONS?
Sorry Kostas, ther isn't any way for me to get video onto the thread without a video camera!. I flew the mini funtana again with a 8 x 4 APC. Vertical is about 3/4 throttle, and it does 3d beautifully. I found that by moving the cg 3/16" behind their range, it flatspins like mad (and I think I like that)!

RE: ELECTRIC TO GLOW CONVERSIONS?
cmartin, the new gp yak 54 you mentioned above has some issues. There is a thread in the elec forums about this plane and it looks to be built too light. Many confirmed cases of the elevator failing, and some clame the wings have failed. Most of them that built it say it is way to light for glow conversions. Something to do with vibrations. Also they said it wouldn't be possible to fuel proof everthing.
Lekky people may just be overly pessimistic huh?

I'm not a big fan of yaks. They fly awesome, but are rather ugly. Here's one, what about Seagull Model's Extra 300, It features a 43" wingspan and is kindof lightweight (33oz flying weight). I've included some of my "Beauty Mods"!

Here's a good cheapie:

Make sure if you cover it with poly that it's waterbased polyurethane and not polycrylic. If you use the polycrylic from the spray cans eventually it will get sticky.

RE: ELECTRIC TO GLOW CONVERSIONS?
I have two versions of the Great Planes Super Sportster EP: one with an AXI outrinner and a 3S2P pack and one with an OS 25FX. The mods were minimal (reinforce the firewall, replace the stock wooden mount with an adjustable glass mount, and replace the stock control rods with 2-56 rods). I actually did the conversion twice, since I lost the first one due to onboard battery failure on its third flight (CYCLE YOUR NEW RX PACKS [:@]). I also needed to add about 3/4 oz in the tail for balance.
Both versions of the SSEP fly great, but watch out for flutter! (that's why I stiffened the pushrods all around).
