What Prop for Satio 180 Wood or Resin?
I've read loads of threads and still have a question.
Well first I have a Wild Hare 73" span Edge 540 that has a Saito 180 in it and weighs 10 3/4 lbs. I do like aerobatics and can do some 3D.
I would like to know what prop to run, I like a 6" pitch for good thrust, it seems to keep the control surfaces working at slow speeds.
I've seen a lot of people suggesting the APC 18x6 and wide 18x6. I've seen some suggesting a Menz 18x6 and has good results, is it worth going the extra for a Mejzlik 18x6?
I've heard that the 4 strokes need a glass resin prop for a flywheel effect to keep it running smoother at low rpm..... Is this true??? Is the torque too much for wooden props??? It's so difficult to make a decision when you hear so many different opinions...
Here's some photo's of the changed colour scheme.

RE: What Prop for Satio 180 Wood or Resin?
Only one way to make that choice--------you're going to have to pick your range and go fly. Then Pick the one that gives you what YOU want.
If you are into 6 pitch preference then you are going to have to go to 18X6 as the 16X6 and 17x6 are light loads for the Saito 150---------and I can assure you that there is a noticeable power difference when you go to a Saito 180 from the 150 ----- as in LOTS.
APC or wood again is a personal choice and all the benefits are NOT in one material.
Wood props generally rev (spool up---a misuse but common today) much faster.
The weight of an APC gives a flywheel effect (only good at idle) but accelerates more slowly.
The wood prop is generally the reverse.
I have used the term "generally" as the aerodynamics of the two props are different. The APC is commonly felt to be the most effective in aero-design qualities due to the strength of small sections. Wood has to have a thicker section because of the lack of strength in a thin design (airfoil percentage).
There is no way in the world to answer that question for someone else's flying preferences----YOU have to do the experimenting and selecting.
BTW talk about an aerodynamic area that has more twists than turns---------props are certainly at the top of that list.
MY experience (no one else's) all APC's smallest you can run is 16X8, then 17X8. You aren't able to go to 6 pitch until you get OVER 17".
Last line ----same as the first -----YOUR perference/choice.
On 17X6 my 150's could over rev it easily (above 9600-) the 16X8 will turn those figures on a 180. My 150's turned the same 16X8 at 8800-8900. The 180 on that prop runs easily at 9600. With those numbers in mind I wouldn't even consider a 17X6 for a 180----simply not much load, however if you find it fits your requirements-----be my guest.
Note - (fuel=Wildcat 15/18 all syn. 1500'ASL, 85*F, TNC Tach.) and those are STATIC numbers! Your choice --- there is NO 'pat ' answer.
P.S. Nice looking plane-------keep it that way

RE: What Prop for Satio 180 Wood or Resin?
I have used APC 16x8, 17x8, 18x6w ans MenzS wood 18x6. All these props works great but until now I like the MenzS 18x6 best for hovering and the idle is smooth and low so there is not much to worry about.
I think a smaller prop like APC or MenzS 17x6 would also be great as long as you dont use full throttle in a dive.
However starting the engine becomes more difficult with a wooden prop compared to a APC. A chicken stick would hurt the prop and is out of question so I use thick gloves to turn the MenzS wooden prop without hurting it.

I must have a weak 1.80. Either that or it will get much better as I burn more fuel. With the 18x6W on 30% I was turning about 8,000 with terrible spool up. It was even trying to over heat on the bench. The 17x8 Zinger would fly it OK but the verticle was not great. That is why I tried the 17x6 APC. It gives good verticle and just over half throttle hover. I would like to try the Menz but I am already $60 deep in props. BTW 2,100' ASL 15% powermaster. The 30% I tried was Rich's Brew. It works great in my 82.

Don't confuse the performance levels of a Zinger wood and an APC each at 17X8!
Big difference.
I flew Zingers for years in Pattern--------BUT-------- since APC I haven't been tempted.

Yeah somethings up with your engine , Coolpower MVC 15% 18x6W I was cranking out around 8300 and that was really rich.
Here goes what she flew like with the 180 with those numbers in an 11.5 pound plane

Well after watching the video I am convinced something is up with my 1.80. I thought I heard yours bog down toward the end of that first verticle but the spool up between yours and mine is night and day. I think I will recheck the valves, start from scratch on the needles and maybe try it without the Cline.
