Hi guys,
does anyone know when they introduced the 400 with the black valve covers?
It appears that it has a better finish to the aluminium parts than its predecessor?
Are there any mechanical differences?
Thanks in advance.
cheers steve

@ yachty. I bought mine a couple of months ago. I have put 5 liters of fuel through it and it seems fine. As far as I can tell there is no difference between older and the latest models except external. I did not open the engine so I dont know what bearings are used. I am very happy. As I said in a previous post, I picked up in a manual for OS that the breather must be plugged while running and then to be removed and drained after flying.

I bit the bullet and bought one of these motors to go into a 77" ziroli stearman.
Everything had a light coating of oil, but no where near enough for running. I stripped the motor down and flushed out with degreaser. There was a lot of machining residue including metal filings. Some of the residue I needed to "scrub" off with an old toothbrush. The cam followers are flat bottomed but needed a bit of deburring on the end. On re-assembly I used liberal amounts of klotz oil to make sure everything had loads of lubrication.
I haven't run it yet as I will be buying a gas conversion kit - initially just the plugs, CDI module and sensor ring from CH-Ignitions, with the view of also replacing the carb with a walbro one later on.
I was going to put a single cylinder motor in the Stearman, but after mounting the radial in, I am in love and so pleased that I decided on this motor and not the single
Here's a photo of it mounted in the unfinished stearman... Yes, the rocker covers and exhausts are still off. I will put those back on later

Thankyou for the compliment. I am definitely enjoying the build and can't wait to fly the plane when it's finished with the nice roar of the radial up front
The plans were purchased from Ziroli Giant Scale Plans. I also bought a short laser-cut kit from Laser Cut Kits Australia. A short kit is basically all the "fiddly" bits like wing ribs and formers. You still then have to go purchase all the other wood and fixtures. "Long" kits are also available from other laser kit cutters.

I have finally had a chance to run my motor up Started a lot easier than I thought it would, which was a nice surprise.
Currently, it's running on 20% oil and 80% methanol with CDI ignition and an Aerostar 19x10 prop. It is able to spin the prop to 7500 rpm which I was surprised about due to being about 600 metres (2000 foot) above sea level. Head temps during the second run-up were around 60 degrees Celsius.
With varying rev ranges and a lot of the time spent in the 4-5000 rpm range, it is only using about 400ml of fuel.
Idle is a bit dissappointing. I can only get it down to 22-2300 rpm. This is with the carb fully closed. I suspect there might be an air leak where the o-ring on the throttle body engages with the carb body. I intend on getting a walbro carb and fuel pump setup which will fix the sloppy tolerances of the stock carb.
So far i am really pleased with this engine. It sounds incredible and is also quieter than I thought. Will look into a ring exhaust for it down the track as well.

I have uploaded a couple of videos to my youtube channel. The first one is of the first start of the motor
The second video is with a temporary ring muffler that I made out of clear plastic pipe (PVC) It was more to gauge how much room I have to squeeze everything into the stearman fuselage.
I was surprised at how well the pipe lasted and the sound from it was incredible.

That sounds great! I have done nothing to my stearman. The energy is just not there. Hopefully I will get to finish it once they get my ticker going again.

I have now converted my ASP radial over to petrol (gas) with the help of CH-Ignitions for the CDI ignition and timing ring, and Morris Mini Motors for the Carburettor, manifold and micro pump conversion kit.
I managed to get a quick (10 minute) run the other night. Here is the YouTube link for the latest video.

I put my hand up to trial one of the CHI CDI units while they were developing them... but, sad to say... despite all their promises of delivering a unit for testing, I never got the chance to try one.
I guess I'll just have to find someone else, hey?

Yes, I remember reading the saga of trying to get a test unit. CH-Ignitions have updated their web site since I bought the unit and they now have them listed. Now to make a ring exhaust for the engine.

There is another ring other than Keleo, I have it but can't remember where I ordered it anymore. But it was online, do a search. Its a bit slimmer and has 2 pipe "exits" at the bottom a la Pitts muffler

Justengines has their "JEN" exhaust collector, but it's more expensive than the Keleo...

And there in lies the issue... That's about $300 AUD for us Aussies.
I was planning on making my own exhaust ring, if for nothing else but to say I made it! I have 19mm (3/4") and 8mm copper pipe for the ring and have bent up the main pipe section for my "V1" but haven't had a chance to do much more.
