RE: Recommend an Onboard Glow
I just use an old servo and glue a micro switch onto it so that when you put a round wheel on it you can grind off enough mat from one side so as to make it a cam to ajust for when you want the glow to come on and wye it into the throtle servo cable and mount the wheel at the point you want the glow plug/s to come on when closing the throtle. With a computer radio you can mix this function into the throtle ch and be able to set it up for whenever you want. You can then mount the servo/switch anywhere its convenint.

McDaniel/SonicTronics makes an outstanding system. I have at least five of these and they are terrific. Easy to install and excellent instructions. About as close to "set and forget" as you'll find.

Hi!
Why use on-board glow on an engine that doesn't need it!
Hi!
Why use on-board glow on an engine that doesn't need it!
1. Fully cowled engine and not wanting to cut holes in the cowl for the glow driver or holes elsewhere for a remote glow connection.
2. Lower and more dependable idle rpm.
3. Because we can

Another option. I haven't used this unit so I can't say how well it performs but I hear good things.

Having the settings available on the outside of the plane is handy. The control panel blends in with the plane pretty well too. Of course, you could always mount in on the inside if you are concerned about spoiling the plane's scale appearance.
edited to add:
Being able to use 1.2 V up to 12V is really nice too! I don't know of any other unit that will allows that much variation of batteries. 2 or 3 cell Li-Ions or Lipos are a nice option.

Styk,
I have an OS 300 twin on a Sig 1/3 Spacewalker. The plane is 14 years old. I used a Jomar E-switch for the first 5 years or so, and then obtained an Electrodynamics glow driver. The Electrodynamics glow driver runs off one D size nicad and has worked flawless for the last 9 years. I like it for ease of starting. Now that the engine is finally broken in, I don't need the glow driver for reliable running or idling, but why take it off - it still works fine. Get in touch with Andy Low at http://electrodynam.com/rc/ - he will get you exactly what you are looking for.

I second what RCPilot100 said. Andy Low, the owner of Electrodynamics is very knowledgeable, an active RC pilot from helicopters to jets and very good to work with. It's for these reasons that I use his Glowlite system on my 104" twin engine PBN Nomad. If he's not around Andy's wife can also give you the information you desire.

I have used those boughten units too but I find my own home brew works just as good and frees up a lot of money for more important things.

While I use a glow driver on my Spacewalker, I am only using it for convenience, not to mask an engine problem such as lousy idle or engine flame outs. Our engines run super reliably - as long as they are broken in properly, use the right fuel, adjusted properly and run in the rpm band it was designed for. I am going to maiden a Royal B-25 this coming summer - without onboard glow drivers. I broke these engines in years ago and they ran flawless. Before I run them on the B-25 next summer, I have a GP CAP 21 I will finish and fly that with each engine - and make sure they are running they way they should be. Once done, I will not worry about a flame out on the twin.

RCPilot,
The OS300-Spacewalker has to be a nice combination. I'm flying my 1/3 Spacewalker with a Saito 2.70 and use onboard glow for the same reason. It's very convenient to just prime, set the throttle and flip. Starts first flip 99 times out of 100 You can see my Spacewalker in my gallery. Best of luck with the B-25. Sounds like a fun project. Happy Holidays.

RE: Recommend an Onboard Glow
I use onboard glow because it cool. It allows easy starting, just turn it on & flip the prop. It also gives me peace of mind when coming down final, the engine will respond at throttle up when needed. Now don't give me all your crap about properly tuned, well broken in, yaddad, yadda. It's called piece of mind.
I use it on my Saito 150 singles and both of my twin cylinder engines. I can turn it off at the transmitter whenever I want to, but usually just leave it on. The nice thing about on board glow it that you don't have to carry any support equipment up to the starting l area. Just choke and flip. No igniters, or starting batteries or drvers, just a heavy glove.
Wworks for me.
