I'm thinking the best thing to do is replace the cam, the shaft it is on, the two thrust washers, and the two cam followers as a complete set since they all wear in together. I have the split type valve retainers, are they supposed to be replaced periodically?

A little dissapointed in Horizon's service policy for Saito engines, as they offer no replacements. Other engine manufacturers in the past would offer a replacement engine to you if your engine needed excessive repairs, at a reasonable price. Horizon just turns you away and tells you to go buy another engine.

Jay,

The cam, lifters, shaft, & shims will be good enough. You do not need to replace the valve keys/keepers.

We can talk you through the timing and adjusting of the valve clearances

I am new to 4 strokes and i recently bought a used saito 120 for my showtime 4d 90.I am not sure how old it is or how many times it has been run.My problem is at half throtle and above it does not gain any more rpm. It,s like my half throtle is full throtle.I,m running a zinger 18 6.10 prop on 20 percent coolpower heli fuel.I don,t know if it is my prop or just a problem with the engine itself.I have not flown this plane yet but have run the engine and runs and sounds great.Any ideas whould be greatly appreciated.

That is way too much prop for that engine. I'm not sure of what prop you need, but I would guess no bigger than a 16x6 or 15x8.

Jaymen

I have exactly the same cam problem with a Saito 180. The problem is that all the engine is full or little metal fins. [:@]

The 15-6 would be a good prop on an old Saito 120

ORIGINAL: w8ye

Here are some pictures of a very early plain Saito 120 ABC with the low cam courtesy of Kmot. It has the air bleed carb with mid range adjustment.

Hello, I just got an FA 120 ABC that looks just like the photos in the quote. However, it has gold rocker covers; is this significant or have they just been replaced from chrome? I do not have any exhaust pipe or muffler; is one necessary, or just an extension, either short or long? I also am missing the high speed needle; Horizon lists two (High Speed Needle Valve:120-220A BySaito EnginesSAI120S85A $5.99, and the same number without the "A" after the part number). Which needel is correct? What prop and fuel and rpms are good for this engine? Any other info or links would also be very much appreciated. Thank you very much and Happy Holidays to all.

Sincerely,

Richard/SPACEWORM/Saito Club Member #635.

They originally had gold rocker covers.

The one in the quote had the rocker covers replaced with silver

The needle without the A was more like what was in it? Either should fit?

The exhaust shown on the quoted engine is a currently available replacement

Thank you very much for the info. How about fuel (nitro and oil), and prop size, and not to exceed rpms? TIA.

Sincerely,

Richard

I'd stay 10% or less on the nitro

I've seen them run with a wide variety of props and they sounded OK in the air

Most 120's do well with a 15 X 8
