Mee too, I own two of them and one keeps bending the tip of the needle, whats up? I have a 58 and a 148 now have two bent needles due to the 58s carb, ordered a new needle for the 58 and arrived as for the 148 (silver) and the needle point is completely different,

The older carb has MDS in scribbled font, scribed on the square front. If I have time I'll take a pic.

I had a old carb that Horizon replaced for me.
The old carb has a small black throttle arm and the low speed idle screw was exposed.
The new carb has a very large aluminum arm and the low speed screw is recessed. If you do have the old carb I am sure that Horizon will replace it.

Rcbeck I just got my replacement carb last week and It doesn't look like the new one that you pictured. It does have the throttle arm that both of the carb's have. But it is not the old style either.

In fact the more that I look at you picture my new carb has two O-Rings. One is at the top of the neck and one is in the middle. I noticed that the one on the right that you pictured has the O-Ring on the base like the old style.

Is yours the 148 or the 58? There is a difference. The smaller engines have a double O ring design at the base of the carb. And I believe they also put an O ring in the needle valve assy.

Default Old MDS Carb

RCBOZO:

The old MDS didn't have any name makings on it at all. The old one was just a shiny aluminum housing. The new one is a much more high tech looking piece.

Default MDS 40 Carbs

RCBOZO:

I saw one of the new carbs for that engine last week. The new one has a beefier looking needle valve assy. I'm going by memory now so stick with me on this! It also has Dual O rings on the base.
And I also believe the new carb has MDS on the front of it also. The needle assy. looks different. it has a raised section at the base of the needle where I think they put additional O rings. I have not taken one apart, But my LOHS and I believe that's what they have done. Hope this helps!

Rick my 40 doesn't have any MDS or anything printed or machined on it. The high speed neddle looks very similar to your new cab that you pictured on the right.

I will see if I can get a hold of the new carb for pictures tomorrow. I probably won't be able to post untill late tomorrow. I will take pictures of all angles. Will that work for you?

Default Whoops!

RCBOZO:

Sorry, I guess I should have paid closer attention! But as long as I'm writing, Did you notice an improvement? I ask because I have a 48 that is experiencing the old MDS radical running! Bad idle, dead sticks, And rpm surging. Sound familiar?

Rick sorry it took so long to respond, it was the most beautiful day today! Low 60's and 0 - 5 MPH winds. I did several SOLO's today
The only thing I broke today was a silly wooden prop!

I have noticed a improvement in this new carb. I did not fly this plane before the new carb but it did have some trouble with running on the ground before the new carb.

The other MDS engine was on an identical plane and it had the old carb, it is now at Horizon getting evaluated.

The carb pitcured on the right is the new carb for the 1.48. All the other engine models new carbs have the aluminum throttle arm. As for the 1.48 I am using it on a 120 size GSP Katana weighs 12 lbs it will hover at 1/2 throttle and has unlimited vertical. No dead sticks or any engine problems so far. The new carb on my 40 fs pro runs great .

Some of the all-machined old carbs had "MDS" engraved on the front of them but most were plain.

Enjoy,

Jim

Default RE: mds carbs

Does anyone have a new style carb for a MDS 148 that they would part with.

Joe
