ADDING A MUFFLER?
OK Guys here’s the situation;
I have just inherited a 1970 vintage engine that originally had an exhaust baffle tied to the carburetor. (K&B 15)
The baffle has been lost with the years and the Carb has been replaced.
That having been said; the other night I was able to fire the engine up with minor difficulties – it ran up quite well. However, without a baffle or a muffler for back pressure the engine would not tune up and speed control was ‘limited’.
Has anyone had any experience adapting a muffler to one of these ‘Older’ engines?

No.
It has the two holes where the baffle would pivot.
I Believe any muffler would have to be held in place with a band and the two pivot holes would have to be filled in... but I have never done this sort of thing before.

RE: ADDING A MUFFLER?
From the description and the age I'm guessing it's one of these? This was for pylon racing and the CL version didn't have the holes although we used this engine to have a try at CL rat racing with the intention af maybe doing some pylon racing with it later. Not a bad little engine, we won a state championship in our first ever competition .
To use a muffler and block those holes I'd suggest making some blanking plugs that would be held in place by the muffler strap. Blanking plugs could also be held in place using a small through-bolt the way some mufflers are held together. The small bolt would have very little restriction in the exhaust port.

What would you make the 'Blanking plugs' out of?

RE: ADDING A MUFFLER?
This is a quick and dirty job I did on mine just now to give some idea. The blanks are made from aluminium and held together by an old bike spoke which was all I happened to have laying around.
With the cast iron piston, use a fair bit of castor.

What a GREAT idea! [X(]
I was busy thinking of a series of nuts and bolts - your system is a lot better!
Thanks for the kick in the right direction!
