OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
I have an Pulse XT 40 waiting for a new engine. I have a OS 46 in my trainer that I was thinking of moving to the pulse, but I like my trainer so much I would rather keep it whole and fly it instead of gutting it. I was thinking of getting a OS .55AX for the pulse but I am concerned that it could be too much power or too much weight. Can anyone who has this combo chime in and tell me what your experience is and your thoughts on the combo?
Thanks!
Thanks!

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
I don't have a Pulse XT myself, but I believe the O.S. Max .55 AX is a very commonly used engine in the Pulse XT .40. My advice would be to read through the user reviews here at RC Universe:

Spoof, I just assembled this Pulse XT 60, it is without a doubt the finest ARF I hve assembled. I'm looking forward to flying it in a couple of days. The OS .55 should be perfect for yours.

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
IMO the weight of the .55 will not be a problem...but you might want to limit your full throttle applications in level flight and while diving. There have been two seperate instances in our club of stab failure while "testing terminal velocity" and such with the supplied Evo .46 [X(] so I would be careful there.
If you put a climb prop (not a speed prop ) on the .55 you would have awesome vertical performance. (like a rocket )

R, it is a Saito 1.00, the exhaust is an early TurboHeader by RCSpecialties, picture #2 is the latest TH on a Saito 1.25. I stole the 1.00 from my Senior TeleMaster to put on my new Pulse XT 60, the 1.25 will go on to the Tele.

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
Thanks for the feedback!
By the way Hobbsy, I also have a Pulse XT 60 waiting for an engine I know I'm sick right? But I got the 60 first and got it all set up except for the engine. I have been waiting for the Saito FA 115GK to come in stock. While waiting I got the Pulse 40.
I am starting to think I should just go with the Saito 100 GK like you did for the 60.

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
I have the XT40 and have an O.S. 46AX swinging a 12x5 MAS "K" series prop. My personal opinion is that this is the perfect combination for this airplane. On a calm day it will hover @ 4/5 throttle and will almost fold the wings back at full throttle in level flight. CG was perfect using the standard battery and reciever locations. The 55AX will be even faster and may need a little movement of weight for correct CG if any.....

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
I've run the .55AX in three different .40 to .46 size trainers (a Sig Kadet, a Hanger 9 PTS Mustang, and a Midwest Aerostar/which my 8 year old flies) and the little bit of added weight is a non-issue. These planes tear up the sky (especially the Mustang minus training gear) with the .55AX's on the top end and will still float in for landings on the low end. You can't go wrong with the .55, I'll never buy another .40 to .46 size engine ever again.

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
spoofer,
I also fly the pulse 40, great ARF with great characteristics.
Love this plane so much I bought a second after crashing her into pieces after about 70 flights. (pushing the envelope)
I have a OS 46AX in it and am very happy with the results. Mounted mine rotated IN THE COWL so the muffler sits right under the fuse for less mess and great looks.
Took some fiddling to get her mounted fully in the cowl, but it looks awesome and very sexy. Hate that engine sticking out.
I'd think you could easily go to the 55AX, (probably wouldn't fit in the cowl though) but I'd increase the size (torque) rating on the servos. If you fly that bird anything like I do (screaming) your liabel to strip a servo gear or two.

Spoofer, I put the new 1.15 on my XT60, I just wanted the 1.00 on the Senior, I found a new set of the Hangar 9 engine mounts and installed the 1.15. I'll take pics. in a while.

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
Thanks hobbsy. I am still waiting for the 1.15 to come in stock for my XT60. Pictures would be great as well as any info on any needed adjustments to get the CG due to the bit of extra weight of the 115.
So how does it fly with the 1.15?!!!
davidbarth- thanks for the reply. I had the standard BB servos for the XT 40 (S3004 Futaba). So you think I need to upgrade them with the 55....any suggestions on what to upgrade them to?
Thanks again!

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
Spoofer,
You know, I use the 3004's on most everything and probably will continue using them for a long time (great servo), but as my planes are getting bigger and my stunts are getting bolder, I can't help thinking a bit more insurance would be wise. the standard futaba 3004 has around 44 oz of torque which is fine for most use, but a saito 115 on a pulse 60? I may go to the 3010 which has 72 oz a costs about $25 at tower.
For ten dollars more you get alot of uumph. At least for rudder and maybe elevators. I think the 2 ailerons and throttle certainly could still use the 3004 ($14).
I don't have any scientific data to support this. Just my intuition. Next guy may disagree.
curious what the gurus think though?

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
Davidbarth,
Sorry for the confusion. I have two Pulse XT's one is the XT 40 and the other is the XT 60. This thread was originally only about the XT 40 but the XT 60 got brought up somehow.
My XT 60 is all built and is only waiting for the engine to go in. I am waiting of the Saito 1.15 to come in stock. On this XT 60, I put in all digital servos. I think they are s3152 Futaba.
On my XT 40, I have not finished building it yet..... that was the one I was asking about the OS55AX for. I bought the Futaba S3004's for this XT 40.
Sorry again for the confusion!!

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
no sorry, no regrets, just plane folk talking turkey.
love those pulses though. mike mcconville deserves a big slap on the back for that design.
I think the digital servos was the way to go.
did you get a look at the PDF attachements of my pulse build above.
I haven't quite figured how to get the pic inserted in the thread so you have to click on the image to open it.
good luck.

Spoofer:
I have a 2 yr. old Pulse XT 40 PNP. I love the plane and have only one complaint. It needs a little more power, particulary for vertical performance. It's a personal preference. Some think a 46 is enough. Some want a little more. A 55AX would be perfect for this plane. Two words on the control of potential excess speed with a 55AX - Throttle management.

Daver, how's the 1.80 doing, my wife and I have been laid up for a few days. We just got back from Disney in Fla and both came down with E-coli, Geri is really sick and I was lucky and only got a dull head ache and flu like aches and pains. If Geri doesn't improve by tomorrow I'm to take her to the Hospital. She is somewhat better though.

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
I picked up a 55ax for my pulse 40 and I hope that the plane will be able to hold up to that kind of power. My Pulse pnp had the evo 46 but I really like this plane so I wanted a very reliable motor like OS. I have heard of the Pulse with the stock Evo 46 doing around 110mph so the .55 must really be fast.
I will be putting in Spektrum DS821 servos as an upgrade to the stock JR 537 servos in the PNP (I know, why didn't I just get the ARF?.) Glueing the wings may be a good idea to reduce the chances of folding the wings.
I let you guys know how the 55ax works for me. I'll start off with an 11x6 prop.
Other Pulse/55ax users please give us your experiences.

I decided to just go with the .46 AX(picked one up a few days ago), but I still interested to see how others fare with the 55AX.
Thanks!

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
Hi
Glad I cam across this thread I have a Pulse XT 40 that I have been flying with an OS46AX. It's an absolute dream to fly with that engine.
Busy putting a Showtime 50 together that I am going to power with a brand new OS55AX, but untill that is done, decided to mount the OS55AX in my Pulse XT 40 for a while and see what the difefrences are in performance between the two.
I needed to add 20 grams of weight to the tail to get it to ballance to the recommended starting point of 70mm behind the leading edge. The OS55AX is 29 grams heavier than the OS46AX. Been running an 11x6 on my .46 but going to start with a 12x5 on my .55 Also, needed to shave a bit more off the cowl to make room for the repositioned needle valve. Other than that, the engine just slipped right in where the .46 sat.
Will post some pictures and some comments about the differences flying the Pulse with two different motors after the weekend.
Marcel

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
Hobbsy, sorry to hear about the recent illness, wish you a quick recovery and regards to the wife.
The 1.80 Saito is fairing much better now that I have a new starter. Ordered the monster 24volt from Mack Hodges (Hodges Hobbies) in andersonville, Ga. You may know mac as the guy with the n20 foot wingspan B-29 that he flies inverted with full smoke on. One of the gents at my field has one of mac's starters and has been gracious enough to lend it to me to start the big Saito. What a dream. She will start now very easily when warm with a flip or two, but not when cold. (maybe when she's fully broken in). The little hobbico starter works for one or two starts but just drains my old battery out after a few starts so I decided to buy the big starter. I sent mac my new Sullivan Dynatron and he built the starter with the 2 hangar 9 7-volts (in-series for 24v) the miller gear drive and a really convenient push button right were you want it (awesome unit) and worth the $212 (plus the dynatron)
Maiden flight was a dream and hope to have her up again this weekend. Muffler wants to vibrate off, so tried some thread lock, hope that works.
My pulse with the 46AX is a bute, but I'd love to have the 55AX in it. I also love to go vertical as far up as possible, fall over the wingtip and spin out on the way down. THe 55 would make vertical unlimited, whereas the 46 has its limit.
I agree that some simple throttle management is simple enough to manage the 55 in any 46 size plane, but I epoxied my wings together (always do). Some of my buddies also reinforce the wing shoulders with fiberglass tape and z-poxy.
so far I haven't had any problems and I've put that bird through a bunch of G's.
By the way, was anyone able to view my pictures (PDF's of the Pulse build) I still haven't figured out how to attach pictures to these threads so they are embedded (visible).

Thanks David B, I have a gap in my Saito line up as I don't own a 1.80 nor a .91. Sounds like you've got a fine starter there. My DynaTron starts my old High Compression 1.50 just fine using a NAPA 300 amp garden tractor battery. I have seen Mac's plane fly twice at Joe Nall.

RE: OS .55AX in a Pulse XT 40
you know Hobbsy, some of my friends suggested a garden tractor battery as well and I thought to myself, why spend 35 bucks when I have the opportunity to blow $300.
It's like buying a useless piece of chrome for my Road King that I don't need and could definitely live without, but somehow my life is enhanced when I see it gleaming on my HOG.
I guess it just makes me feel gooooood. Otherwise I'd probably be riding a moped.
All the best.
