Removing/Insering valves on Surpass!!!
Can anyone give me a few tips/tricks on how to remove/insert valves on a OS 70 surpass!!! Those springs look like they can give me a hard time. What do you guys use to clean the black stuff of the valve?
I need to clean and lap the exhaust valve, will need to do the intake allso. I heard that the guys are using toothpaste as valve lapping compound!!!
This will be my first time, working on them valves.
Any pics is more than welcome
Thanks

This procedure is not "Effort Effective" unless there is a lot of carbon caked up on the stem side of the exhust valve. The engines run on methanol and run a lot cooler than one running on gasoline. You stand to do more harm than good unless work is necessary. There again I wouldn't take out the intake valve at all.
In an older engine the valves get mushroomed on the tip of the stem and you cannot get the spring retainers off nor can you get the valve out of the head without using a burnishing stone to take away the mushroom overhang.
To force a mushroomed stem through the valve guide with do needless damage to the valve guides.
To undo the keepers place the head in a plastic bag so when they go flying off you still have them in the bag.

1. wad up a rag into a tight ball, and put the head down onto it
2. push down on the top collar, and once loose, get the retainers with a small magnet on a stick
3. clean the valve with a small wire wheel, or a dremel wire tool
3. use car finish rubbing compound with a pin vise or a small tap handle to reseat the valve to the seat.

....this is what I call a magnet on a stick. The other end is spring loaded, and is
used to hold small screws so you can get the threads started in tight places like
automobile distributers and electrical motors.
You can get one of these tools at an auto parts store.

Thanks w8ye and Flyboy Dave. I will give these methods a go.
Believe me I tried to "look the other way" but I am losing compression on the exhaust valve, so I have to do it. Thanks again for the valuble info.
