Problem with Saito rocker shaft
I just tore down my old Saito FA 65 to replace the bearings. When I pulled the rocker covers, I found that the exhaust side rocker arm pin had enlarged the threaded hole in the boss, resulting in the pin wobbling and of course not able to be tightened.
Is this a common problem, was it due to the rocker arm pin not being adequately torqued the last time I removed it?
Looks like a new "jug" is in order. I don't think this is a job for JB weld or Marine Tex[&o].
Any advice from the Saito Gurus would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
Pete

RE: Problem with Saito rocker shaft
Hi Greg,
In the future, would it be a good idea to use a tiny amount of blue Loctite on the threads of the rocker pin?

Blue Loctite probably won't help. That part of the engine likely exceeds the temperature spec for Loctite 242. The best thing would be to clean the threads so they are dry and tighten it with a good tool.
As for the repair, I think only a new jug will do.

Last week a Saito(180) guy at my club had the rocker arm support break completely away. The threaded portion of the support is still down in the screw hole.

RE: Problem with Saito rocker shaft
This is the result of insufficient torque on the rocker arm shaft. If you have an older clock repair man in your town, he can likely make up a bushing and cut the proper thread.

RE: Problem with Saito rocker shaft
Guys,Thanks for all the input.
I will look into the possibility of the threaded bushing, but the price of a new jug is not at all that bad at 50 bucks.
I try not not to damage things by over torquing them, oh well, sometimes you can't win[:-]

Pete

RE: Problem with Saito rocker shaft
On the larger Saitos you can put a set screw through the top of the rocker support and that will fix it but I don't know about the smaller ones. There might not be enough material there to drill the hole and thread.

Try a torque driver. Something like this. The one I have is no longer on the market.
