I am planning to use the Merlin 4 stroke plug. I have been told they are excellent. I am going to give the FAI fuel a shot just for break in just to make certain it is a understressed as possible. I will make certain to watch the mixture. Might help to keep the glow driver attached while running it rich to help with cleaning up the combustion.

The biggest problem with FAI fuel is that folks tend to end up running the engine too lean. The needle is so sensitive in many engines that folks err on the wrong side of just right. But with your experience level, I doubt that will be a problem.

Who sells Merlin plugs? This is the first I've heard of them.

I use el cheapo plugs (used) for break-in. No sense in contaminating a fresh glow plug just for break-in duty.

I have a lot of plugs I have accumulated over the years so I can afford to use a good plug for break in. Personally the last thing I want to do is have any trouble breaking in a new engine just because I used a questionable plug but that is just me.
Merlin plugs were suggested by a friend of mine that is also involved with glow engines. You can get them here. http://www.merlinglowplugs.biz/Compare.html
Only complaint so far is that they are not marked with a plug number so you can keep track of which is which. However they are color coded.

That is good news. It is just way too cold here for outside activities.

I didn't say that I was going to use a bad plug for break-in. I said I was going to use a used plug and most likely it would be one of my least popular plugs, which will be good enough to run the engine rich while the ring is seating. Sheesh! <G>

Ed I did not intent to imply anything. I have just had bad luck with plugs sometimes. Usually with a new engine. [:@]
It has been much better since I got my power panel.

Hey Everyone,

Wow, I hadn't checked this thread since I posted awhile back!

I just wanted to post that Hobby People now has the XLS 2-stroke .46 engine for sale at 40% off! It's only $47.99!

http://www.hobbypeople.net/gallery/210756.asp

Man, these "SALES" are killing my wallet!

No problem, my friend. I was just kidding back.

While I do use those little nicad pocket boosters now and then, the old power panel in the field box with a 12 volt lead/acid battery is never far away.

I have found the power panel with a good amp meter is a great way to tune an engine. I have a Hot Shot glow driver but I am never quite certain if the glow plug is glowing or not. With the power panel I know it is getting juice and I can use it to check if I need a hotter plug or not.
It also helps when breaking in a new engine to ensure I am getting good combustion while running a rich mixture.

Hello everyone!
During rebuilt of mine magnum 52 four stoke, found that gear cam has a positioning dot mark. However engine case does not has anything to lineup when putting back together. Does anybody know proper cam to case position for proper valve timing.

With the engine piston at top dead center align the dot with the exhaust lifter position with the lifter removed

That is correct.

If you are at the other TDC (overlap) the mark will be opposite the lifter almost straight down (about 5:15)

Hi, I was wondering how long your .52 lasted before it needed a rebuild. I just broke mine in last weekend, and it seams to be a nice engine.

I ran for about two years and then it was in storage for a while. I desided to clean and inspect first before it goes back into the plane.

Hi,
I got one more question for you. I did assemble the engine and set cam gear the way you showed. But i think a might be little off. When i turn manually crankshaft i fill little suction from exhaust pipe. The problem is, that everything was assembled using commercial loctite. I took screws off, but plate is seem like glued on. What can be used to soften the loctite and not damage the plate? I really don't want to pry it.

The instructions with my new engine say, "Use 10% nitro 20% Castor for break in". All I have is 10% nitro 18% castor oil mix (Power Master). Think I can get by with using it for the break in?

Make sure you tune it rich and go for it. I like to open up the crankcase and cam cover and add some oil to them for the first runs.
