ASP 160 FS Twin questions
Hello everybody,
I just bought my first twin engine, a 4 stroke ASP 160 FS Twin and I have few questions:
- is some kind of special fuel (with less/more oil or less/more nitro) recommended for twin engines ?
- there are special kind of glow sparks for 4 strokes engines or for twin engines ?
- is absolutely necessary to have an onboard glow system ?
Thank's for your help !
George

RE: ASP 160 FS Twin questions
George,
1- Fuel with 18% oil and 10% nitro is great, 0% nitro works well on this engine too;
2- Regular 4-stroke glowplugs, like OS "F";
3- I find it a must for a reliable idle on mine, otherwise it loose a cilinder at low rpm. I find this to be caused by the different intake tube lenght for each cylinder, giving a leaner charge to the rear cylinder, causing it to quit.

I believe that the Magnum 1.60 is the same as the ASP.
I use 15%, with 18% oil, part castor.
As stated above, I use OS F plugs, and onboard glow.
Mine is still in the break-in stages, but it hauls my 1/4 Spacewalker around with authority !

RE: ASP 160 FS Twin questions
Mine is still in breaking-in process; only 4 tanks of 260cc thru it.
During first 2 tanks the left piston was not firing; Tanks 3 and 4 the right piston is not firing. It's frustrating to see the different temperatures on each cylinder.
First step: I will try using proper 4 strokes OS glow plugs.
Thank you !

TomCrump,
How to you solve the side thrust issue ? The firewall is angled or do you use shorter stand offs on the right/down side ? Or no side/down thrust at all ?
The stand offs are offset compared with the center of the firewall ?
Nice plane and very nice and clean engine set-up you have !
Thank's,
George

RE: ASP 160 FS Twin questions
Mine is the OS 160 just about the same thing. I use 10% nitro with 80-20 synthetic-castor fuel. I don't use a on-board glow, the engine runs great without one. I have lost a cylinder in flight once but still has good power on one to land.
Always use OS-F plugs.

George: My Spacewalker doesn't require side or down thrust. If it did, I'd adjust the lengths of the stand offs to accomate it.

RE: ASP 160 FS Twin questions
I have just bought one of these engines as well....but without a manual. Can anyone confirm whether or not you need to set up tank pressure from the exhaust system please. There appears to be no take off point in the exhaust system to do so. In which case do you need a pump..... or do they just not need any forced pressure?
Thanks

RE: ASP 160 FS Twin questions
Ok, I now have had the magnum 160 fs ft in a model and it runs and idles fine.... well at least it does for about the first quarter of a tank then it goes off tune from leaning out. Fill the tank again and once more it is fine till the fuel level drops once more. I cannot richen it to run at the lower fuel levels as then it will not run correctly with the tank full. I cannot alter the tank position.
I have come to the conclusion that my only real fix will be to fit a pump. I was just about to fit a spare fs fuel pump I had (a Perry mechanical) when I read that it will probably not work on a flat twin as the vibration pattern would be wrong.
If this is true what pump do I then need?
Cheers

RE: ASP 160 FS Twin questions
Just last week, I ran into a mixture problem on my Mag 1.60. I found that the HS needle setting changed during the run.
If you haven't checked for this, you may want to, before you invest in a pump.

Hi!
Set the engine (low speed needle ) correctly and you will not need a pump!
Use a 16x6 prop, OS F glow plugs and a tank mounted according to the tank rule setup with Uni-flow or better yet...use the Tettra "Bubblelesstank"!

RE: ASP 160 FS Twin questions
The needles are fine are it performs without issue for the first quarter tank.
Another point I need to menyion is that I have not pressurised the fuel system as I was told this was not needed.

well leave it to w8ye to come up with what we all should have known......good one w8ye............i forgot about that option.
personally i stay away from projects that cause plumbing issues.
nice to have this option.

Thanks... yeah I had thought of that as I used to use a similar setup when I ran boats years ago..... I just reckoned that a pump would be less of a fiddle once installed.

I have the Magumn 160 twin and it took a lot of running to get it run in. I fixed the on board glow system with on board ign, yep, spark ign, Idles heaps better and a few more rpm on the top end.
Cheers

Tom,
Nice job on the Spacewalker. How did you like the kit. I have built the Sig 4*60 and it was a nice kit. If you know, how does your Spacewalker compare to that? Laser cut? Also, what kind of fuel mileage do you get with the 1.60 twin?

The Spacewalker is a "Builders Kit". Although not hard, it is more difficult than the 4 Star. Most parts are die cut, but the fit is excellent. Some are merely printed on balsa and have to be cut by the builder.
While running rich, during breakin, thmy Mag 1.60 ran for 28 minutes ona 24 oz tank. This was at varying throttle levels.
