Default ASP 1.20 and 1.80 FS

Hi everyone

Do the ASP/MAGNUM/SC 1.20 FS and 1.80 FS have the same physical size?

Thanks,

Jorge

No...you don't understand my question... I know the ASP/MAGNUM/SC brands are the same...

I am asking if the 1.20 and 180 FS engines share the same dimensions...or if the 1.80 is a "bigger" engine

The 1.80 is bigger in the head and barrell and slightly longerand
around 200 gr heavier but,
yes they have the same mounting pattern.
I have both and can interchange them in my 1/4 cub with ease.
the only thing that is out is the carb arm is a bit lower on the 1.20
so i have to move the servo rod a bit..
have fun

Thanks for the answer...

I wanted a 1.20 size four stroke...but since the price on hobby king for the 1.80 is lower than any 1.20 you get anywhere... I was wondering if there would be much a difference in size (there should be obviously though in power).... I wouldn't like to have an extremely big engine since the cost of operation and accesories would be very high

Hi estradajae,

Hobbyking has the ASP FS 180 on sale. I just ordered one. I don´t know if the 120 FS is more frugal than the FS 180. Even if, I still can throttle back The extra weight is a plus in my model.

Thanks Pippin

I guess it is the way to go then... it is also cheaper....
My concerns is...ahg when you want big engines...you need also a big plane...and big props and big from everything and everything is lot more expensive!...

I spent the last week in Berlin...well actually in Potsdam with my Girlfriend..... You can go a thousand times to Berlin and still find it exciting!

...Asmund, you pointed me to the ASP 180

I think, I will go with the MS 18x6 K-Series or perhaps the Classic series. The price for props in the 120-180 range is more or less the same. My radio gear for either 120 or the 180 would be the same too. So, I do not see the extra costs. What do you want to fly with such a engie? A Tucano? The ASP 120 is quite heavy. The 180 would be no big difference. If I need a light 120 class engine for a light model that does not need extra weight in the nose, I would rather go with the OS 110.

My ASP 180 is going to go in this baby: http://www.reidsmodels.com/product_detail/nate.html The radial cowl is the reason why I want to use the 18x6.

Hummm...actually I'm a scratch builder.... I'll be returning shortly to Colombia and ARFS there are cost prohibitive...so I don't have a plane in mind yet...

With costs I mean that everything will be more expensive....for that engine...props, more fuel....the plane.... Servos aren't going to be quite cheap as well... but anyway I was wondering if there would be much of a difference between both engines...and you all have pretty much answered my questions... and is that the engines are quite in the same category

Thanks for the answers

Asmund you are also guilty...I just pushed the "buy now" button....

My dad will kill me for this one...But I have to take advantage of the strong Euro against dollar...

Now I just have too many engines.... plenty to play with... the last engine I received was a ASP 91 from Hobby king..now comes the 180... aksdjflkjasfdlkansfdlkasdjklf!

I just want to hear the puf puf puf when I get it!

I have the 180 in my Rascal.Backflip starts are very easy. I recently converted mine to ignition but still running glow fuel. A very sweet running engine, the casting is not much to write about but it delivers so who cares!

Yes I know...with magnums/asp the castings are not so pretty compared to others...and overall machining....

But yeahh..who cares..??

Is it intended to turn a 18x6 prop??

Hopefully runs on no nitro fuel... xD

Welcome in the 30cc class. Still I am waiting for my 180 to arrive. I might get the 91fs too. It´s sooo cheap.

I would start with the MS 18x6 after break in.

HEHEHE

About prop choices it is good because I bought also an MDS 148 (for 80EUR)..and it also likes 16x8 or 18x6 props...

At the current exchange rates from EUR to USD....I got it for 175EUR with shipping...

The 91 ended at about 135EUR with Einfuhrgebühr und MwSt...

When I bought the 180 it asked me the Declared value of the package and the default was 30% (60USD)...I left it so and I shipped it to Colombia, so I think my country allows for this tricks?? when I bought the 91 the option wasn't there, and I had to pay the taxes for the engine plus the shipping, how does it works???

Saludos,

Jorge

...do you have a place for your 180FS in mind?

Mine was shipped today. I might get an ARF for the first couple of gallons before I put the engine in the not-ready-yet Nate.

...my ASP 180 arrived today. Is it normal that one or two of the cooling fins are a bit bend down?
Beside that, the finsih of the engines seems to be improved over the ASP 61 FS.
But check the valve clearence befor you run the engine. One of the valves had no clearence at all. I have to order the suitable props before I can break in that beast.

I would say that it is not normal at all.... my ASP 91 FS came with a bent check valve, caused by the packaging....the check valve shouldn't be shipped with the extension....

Mine should be arriving in three weeks, I'm looking forward your report.

Do you save money on balsa wood, being so close to where it is grown?

I'm like Asmund and the rest of the fellows. I'd go for the ASP 1.80. In fact, I did once already. Sold my new 1.80 to a friend. I should order another.

Hi Ed

Actually yes, Balsa is very cheap here, but I think not so cheap anymore.... We have here a couple of companies that produce the balsa. As always you have to select the proper wood
What we lack here is good quality plywood and the minimal thicknes is about 2mm.... I would like to get here some quality plywood.... but anyway I manage to build my planes. I just returned from germany and I brought a couple of things, and some plywood !

I already ordered my ASP 180 and I'm waiting for it to come!!

...I used a screw driver to bent the fin back into alignment. Maybe, the main engine casting droped to the floor after I came out of the casting mould. Who knows. Hopefully, there are no tensions in the casting.

Default RE: ASP 1.20 and 1.80 FS

I just received my engine!

The quality seems good. I was surprised that the engine feels so light for the size....

It came with the prop washer stuck because of rust on the crankshaft exactly there...had a lot of problems trying to remove it...got it finally with penetrating oil and up und ofrth movement.
I inspected the guts of the engine and everything seems ok except for the o-ring on the carb-manifold junction, the o-ring was improperly installed and damaged. I'll search for a replacement one.

As for the rust on the crankshaft, It is only around the woodruf key, not deeper...I'll take a couple of pictures and send it to Hobbyking and see what they can do for me....and then I'll brush it with my dremel and a steel brush.

I'm Happy so far with the engine, and let's see how it runs. I'll try it first with a fuel with 16% castor oil and no nitro. Already removed one of the head shims. I have to wait for the propeller and I'll make a proper test stand (have a couple of engines to break in and I don''t have any stand)....Any ideas/plans?

Take it easy on the castor or else it might foul up your valves and make them leak. Just a little castor 2-4% and the rest synthetic is best

Default RE: ASP 1.20 and 1.80 FS

Look at the way the crankshaft came to me!

I went to the warranty page of hobby king....but it says automatically that I need to send the whole engine back... they say shipping costs are no way refundable, which is about 35 dollars just to get it there again, and what I understood is that I have to pay the shipping back too, so it would be around 70bucks....... A new crankshaft at justengines costs 31 pounds, and at hobbypeople around 59 bucks....

I just brushed the rust with my dremel and a wire brush disk and looks ok, where it was rusted, there is no more mirror like finish, but it is ok...

If I send them this pictures...they may tell me that I dissassembled the engine and that they won't cover it...so I haven't sent it yet.

I think I will just leave it like that....

If the people there at hobbyking would just have taken a look at the engine before they've sent it...
