Only a thousand to be made. They are probably waiting until they get 1000 orders taken before they start making them, that would be my guess.

Put it up right away and some idiot might pay $1000 for it. Though not likely.

I dont think anyone who orders this engine will put it in a plane. ...
I'm planning on getting one and building a metallic covered Basic Bipe for it. I know the heat of operation isn't quite what this gold plating is designed for, but does anyone have any real experience with gold plating in an operational environment?

If it is the same as the gold plating that Saito used on there GN's Valve covers, it will show wear by just wiping it clean after a while. I had the Saito GN valve covers on a Saito 100T and it looked really nice, but after a while was starting to come off. The engine was in a Clipped Wing Cub, so I wiped them down with the plane after every time at the field.

I'm building a Basic Bipe from some RCM plans. I think I'm going to go with silver metallic top, the maroon metallic for the bottom, and perhaps gold metallic accents. The girls are insisting that I let them bedazzle it with rhinestones, so we'll see. I tried to tell them the prop wasn't a proper place for rhinestones but that's still under discussion.

I'm in the middle of a North Star build, so it might be a bit before I actually get to building it.

I got mine the other day too. Did you read the card that comes in the box? Jinglish at it's very best! I got #597. It appears that the exhaust is gold anodized, and if it gets dirty there would be no way to clean it without ruining it. I think mine will be left unrun....

Is it really worth it? I mean for 299 you can get yourself a decent engine that would be usefull.. Who wants to bay that much on an engine for display. Think about it

I have much more expensive new engines just waiting in the wings for that project that I will probably die with. I am not rich, but this is quite a expensive hobby and I have accepted that fact.

IMO, glow engines will always have aplace in this hobby, never becoming totally obselete, Saito only made a limited number of these engines, and they will remain special far into the future.

Oh, absolutely worth it every penny!

I've spent a lot more money on a lot less fulfilling things .. most of them with long hair and lipstick.

This engine was intended to be a shelf queen. It should never be run or even mounted on a plane

I was pleasantly surpised to received 2 Saito Gold that I had ordered. I ordered from Great Hobbies in Edmonton, Canada. They have 2 more in stock, so if you are looking for one get it from them. The engines looks awesome, was worth the wait!!!!!

W8ye,
I disagree with your opinion on box. the box could have been better, so can that acrylic stand. It looks very ordinary. It would look better if it was in a wood box with serial number rivited on the box, Display stand should have been wooden...... all in all box could have been nicer. i love the engine.

Agreed .. the box should be wooden .. balsa .. with wings .. with a nice metallic monokote sheen .. and the engine proudly and loudly displayed on the front >

Around here, you can get excellent wooden cigar boxes for a few dollars. There's a tobacco shop that has a lot of different types out for about $3. The good ones have a small plaque piece screwed into the lid. If you removed that and replaced it with another label it would look just about better than anything else.
