Aviastar 53-who's flying one of these?
I've been flying the Aviastar 46 and really like that engine. Is anyone flying the Aviastar 53? What have been your experiences with it?

Pretty good engine; mine had super-tight pinch when I got it. It had an audible click at TDC. Mine had carb issues; sent it back and Sig put a new carb on it. Better, but not perfect. I may try the carb barrel notching I've heard about; supposedly, you file a notch in the barrel to give an air-bleed effect at low speed and transition. Mine certainly has spent a lot of time getting the needles fiddled with; I can't get it just right, but it's not a bad sport engine.

"Generally" it will give about 500 more rpm on the same size prop over the .46. Friend of mine had one on a Sig four star 40 and it flew great.

Hey Cowboy, something I learned from the 46 is that it takes quite a while to break in. As it breaks in you can lean the low end more and more and this will probably clean up the midrange just fine. My Aviastar 46 is turning out to be a great engine. I have about a gallon through it now. I suspect the 53 will be even easier to fix the mid-range if it uses the same carb.
