Cox production .020 in one of those yellow plastic helicopters. Flew it until the nipple on the plastic gas tank broke off. Then strapped a small metal C/L tank on with rubber bands and continued to fly it "til the blades fell off". Interesting that I now work at the insurance company that owned the big field where I first flew the helicopter in 1977. I see the field every day coming to work and going home.

Cox Babe Bee .049. Cost $3.95 at the local toy store. That a lot of cash for a 10 year old with a paper route. First plane was Carl Goldberg Wizard. Didn't last long. Found I had no skills at control line so went to free flights until I was 18 and got my first R/C.

For R/C, first motor was an Enya .29BB, still have it. First R/C (besides some gliders) was a Top Flight Headmaster. I flew the wings off that thing... literally. Hahahahah

ORIGINAL: MJD

The first engine I was given was a Pee Wee .020 with a CG Ranger 30 kit on my 9th birthday. Lost it on the first flight.. . I also got a Jetex Scorpion 600 the same day. Score!!! That was abit much for my airplane skills, but snow sleds and cars were okay, though I think at least half of all the pellets burned was were expended in the rubble pile down the road or upside down after wiping out. Fun!

MJD
Wasn't that Ranger 30 a great flier? I must have had 5 or 6 of them, PeeWee .020. I spent a lot of my youth running or riding my bike after a Ranger 30.

I didn't follow Carl's advice about 20 second engine runs, they weren't fun enough. Fill the tank for 3 minute runs and have some binoculars...LOL!!!

Mine was a Testor's P-40 CL back about 1971. Back then you could buy one for $9.99 at the local toy store. I couldn't wait for my dad to help me start it so I just swung it around in a circle...that is untill I T-boned the neighbors fence! My next was a Testor's P-51 which I flew the snot out of...great rise off ground and great circles, but not much else. After that I had all kinds of Cox .049 stuff, P-51, Fokker Dr1, Sopwith Camel, PT-19, and Corsair. My sopwith Camel was the only one that survived my childhood, that is until wife #1 decided to toss it into the trash one day while I was at work, "since it looked so old"! But the first "big" engine I had was a Super Tigre 35 Combat CL that I bought in about 1977. What a screamer....that motor DID survive my first marriage and I still have it in it's original box. : )

An 049 (don't remember the mfg) on a ukie from Disneyland (Anaheim, CA). I got my folks to buy it for me after watching a Disney guy fly three of them at once, one control handle in each hand and one in his mouth. Obviously made an impression on me. I was 10 or 11 at the time.

My sister bought me a Cox plastic UC with an .049 for my 8th birthday. It was a Cessna 150 or something of that nature..... a lot of years ago.

Without even looking at the rest of the thread, #1 answer; Cox .049 in an injection molded RTF Mustang about 1968. My second was a used torpedo Green Head .09, and I still have it.

Edit: Those plastic RTF's were not capable of pulling out of a wing over, especially as performed by a twelve year old newby. The engine wound up in a Baby Flite Streak, that survived it's first flight, unlike the ill fated Mustang.

It seems the #1 answer is a Cox .049. Certainly my first experience with an airplane engine. Must have been around 1982. Then a Cox PT 19 which had to be swung at our altitude. (learned about that later).
My first serious engine though was a Fox .35 on a Ringmaster (of course). Saved all of my lawn mowing money to buy both. Fried it using modern synthetic fuels.
First R/C was a Royal .40 sold as a package deal with an Eagle 63 Goldberg trainer. X-mas 1984. Best present I ever got. the rest is history!

OK Cub .049. Put it in a U/C Spitfire kit (don't remember the kit maker). Plane was all solid balsa, hollowed out here and there. Gave her about 7 coats of silver radiator paint. Probably weighed in at about 7 pounds. Never left the ground but could she taxi! That was back in '53.

I grew up on diesels being in the UK. The first glow engine was a McCoy 35 Red head. Treated it with huge respect as it was enormous compared to anything else I had seen.

An engine I wish I'd kept - the Johnson .29 which I put in a C/L scale T-28B - for it's time, mid '50s, it was a great engine!

.049 that came mounted in a plastic free flight helicopter. The engine was mounted to the rotors so once you got the engine peaked, the torque would spin the rotors in the opposite direction to the prop and it would lift off and gain altitude until the engine ran out of gas. Then it would auto-gyro down I didn't know anything about glow engines and if I recall correctly, out of about 20 tries, I only got it peaked properly 2 times. Not sure what ever happened to that thing.

Thunder Tiger PRO .46 on a Hangar 9 Solo Sport... around 2000. Just bought a second Thunder Tiger PRO .46 as well, and put it in my Pulse XT 40.

As I read through these posts, it seems the majority of guys on here have been flying for a very long time...

Are there not many newcomers to the hobby anymore? Or... maybe they're all just going electric?

Norvell .061 in a little scratch built trainer. Then an O.S. 40SR in a Balsa USA stick plane in about 2000 that I still have today.

My first RC engine was a Fox 59. I thought it was HUGE and POWERFUL. It probably couldn't outdo an OS 40LA, but I loved it anyway.[&:]

A Cox .049 Baby Bee that was going to power a Guillow's Bellanca Cruisemaster. At that time I was 5-6 years old and I used to put toy soldiers on the engine and run around the room as if they were flying. I was always fascinated by this little engine.

My first glow engine was a Mohawk 29 u control. The other guys had Olson & Rice 23's, The Mohawk had a lot more power than the Olson & Rice engines and started much easier. Than my next engines were OK Cub .049 & .074. They were good engines for free flight. Than came the COX .049 engines that I had from the black .049. the Golden Bee's and the black widow that was a real screamer.
In 1978 I purchased my first rc engine which was a K & B .40 and later a Fox .45 and after that several Glow engines up to a Super Tiger 3,000.
Than I got into gas engines starting with a Qudra 35 and later chain saw conversion engines up to 10 1/2 hp.
The last 3 years I have been in electric's with high powered brushlless motors and Li-Po batteries.

Otto.
