Can anyone I.D. this engine ?

Hi all from a wet, grey, windy N.W. UK = no flying this weekend [:o]

Can anyone I.D. this engine =

It appears to be un-used. I got it from a friend in the village where I live, who's father owned it, sadly he has recently died.

It is in an un-flown (un-completed) fibreglass and foam semi-scale BA Gnat (as per the UK's "Red Arrows"display team).

It appears to be a .40 size, has no makers name on it, but does have 09.92.2326 stamped on the edge of the l/h bearer. It is not fitted with a ring but does not feel like an ABC type setup (no "pinch" at the top). I fired it up on my test stand, rich and on a 10x4, just to check it runs ok, and it does. The colour of the anodising has come out pretty accurate in the pics, a pale yellowy gold. The black bit on the prop driver is just a "keeper" I use when no prop is fitted.

Thanks for looking folks :)

Hi! My best bet is an original, Russian MDS. All the "English" MDS were made in Russia as well, but there were modification in both the design and the anodizing. This is an original Russian MDS I have , which is extremely similar.

RE: Can anyone I.D. this engine ?

That is an early russian MDS .40 aka Raduga 6,5ccm without the marking. I saw them on Ebay as Jamara WMB .40 I think.

I don't think that the carb is really usable as it comes from the factory but maybe it is the improved version.. Is there a tubing in the carb going over the spraybar or is there a really a low speed "needle" going into the spraybar from the left to the right when your look from the front?

The Engine is an ABC engine, they don't have that much pinch when new. Maybe you can feel it when you remove the Gloplug and rotate it slowly.

Search for something like "old russian engine" here, I think you will find a thread about this engine where Earl and I laboured around them..
I hade one snapping his Crankshaft last year, maybe you should heat thread it 2 hours in the kitchen oven on approx 300°C and let it cool slowly.

Holm

Edit: look at here, page 3 and following, my pictures are still online...

Thanks for the input folks ;)

Looks like I got a white elephant then [:o] - Anyone want to buy a paper weight ? (Ebay here we come)

Good job the other engine I got was an ST S40 in good nick :) all be it in a tatty and heavy airframe. No profit here I think, might just break even if I am lucky !

Might keep the "Gnat" airframe though, fit the ST and finish it off :) will make a change from control line aerobatics and R/C gliders which are my usual haunts [8D]

If you want to sell it and you can ship it to germany, I'll give you approx 20 Euros for it.
I've converted one to water cooling and will use it in a boat. Think it is wise to have some
spare parts at hand..
If you are interested drop me a mail to [email protected].

Kind Regards,

Holm aka tiffitech.

The ones with the anodized gold thrust washer and head with the oval on the side are license built MAC (early MDS, not for export) engines made in East Germany. It is of higher quality and this looks like a nice example and is much rarer than the russian ones.

RE: Can anyone I.D. this engine ?

No. I'm a east german :-) No one ever made those engines here.
This "МДС" are the cyrillic Letters MDS (http://unicode.e-workers.de/kyrillisch.php) and this is a russian product. I have an MDS10 with anodized
Thrust washer with the letters MDS on it. In the timeframe where the engines are sold, (after the fall of the iron curtain) east germany had the
same economic rules as western germany, much to expensive to make cheap and unlabeled engines for the rest of the world.
The ones w/o label are made for jamara as far as I can tell, a noname product even for export. I saw them from time to time on Ebay.
The quality, even of the russian engines are not that bad, besides of that carb and besides of snapping crankshafts from time to time.
I think the crankshaft issue is more a construction problem than a quality issue.

Next thing is, I can see if a product is russian made, materials and the finish is different to that what we made here in ex eastern germany.

I like the look of it.

Carlson Engine Imports may still sell them.

Yours has a Taipan prop on it too!

:-)

Like this one too...

There is a version with an water jacket too, but I don't own one (jet).

In the picture from my previous post is at the right background an 6,5ccm MDS
like the one from the John, but in this case with cyrillic letters on it. It has a Webra
TN Carb mounted.

Hi there Holm and all,

The engine, in the first post in this thread, is surplus to my requirements and is available to anyone who can find a use for it.

As this is not the "for sale" section of RCU, best pm me for details of cost (30 Euro's plus cheap P&P, PayPal prefered, ;) ) go on, treat yourself to this "unusual" motor [8D]

Happy new year all,
