What is the smallest glow engine you fly
 

With any regularity? I fly a Norvel .049 on a little Ugly Stick sometimes .

Smallest I use regularly is the PeeWee .020 (in a J3 cub), but mostly I fly .061-.074 Norvels. For a real treat I fly a PAW 09RC, or the Modela Junior, both are diesel and there is just something special with those, back to the roots kind of thing...

My favourite planes are the Yellow Jacket with a Norvel .061RC, and a Super Chipmunk with a fully cowled Norvel .074RC;

Nice, I wish I could afford an .074, they are a little expensive to me.

I think I got my .074 for about $35. The little stuff has fallen out of favour since the electrics came along, good deals at swapmeets. It was brand squeaky new. Nice strong motor that isn't sensitive on the high speed needle like most stuff. I guess my smallest motor I fly is .049 on a control line combat, couple of speed planes that I don't fly any more. I just got an .010 that I am getting ideas for. Pageboy is most likely. A .15 is my fave because of the ever present wind.

Flying in wind is more related to the airplane type as I see it. A fast and slim plane works better in wind than a slowflying floater does. The size it-self is not so important.

I think $79.99 is a fair price for any decent glow engine with an RC carb, regardless of size. It's no cheaper to machine small engine parts than larger, might be more costly. Material cost is almost insignificant in the final price.


As to the OP question: with any regularity I fly .049's. Not regularly I fly .010's and .020's. Only recently have I flown an .010 RC, but many FF over the years, and a couple ukies ages ago.

I am going to faster planes now from the floaty glider type stuff I used to fly. Sig Wonder Fox .15, Ace Simple 400 with Norvel .06. My new digs here are very windy.

I think you got the engines switched, the .15 should be in the Simple 400..! :rolleyes:

The S400 was a really fun airplane, I beat the crap out of mine for 2-3 seasons until I strained it through a tree, but it was all the tree's fault. I'd like to put another together, but with an AME .061 or NV .074 instead of the.. you know.. other kind of motor I had in the first one.

Smallest for me is a .049 GB.

That might be it. If you ask for the biggest motors, you will get a much bigger response.

I guess the small engine lowers hang out in their dedicated (1/2A - 1/8A) forum...

It was a general question, some guys I know are flying .40 size as their smallest. Maybe I need to post a poll.

I bet $5 the curve you get from the poll data peaks at .40-.46 cu in.

OS FS .30 in my parkzone spitfire.
Pics show an ASP .30, but I replaced it with an OS motor instead.

Comes in to land slightly hotter than the electric version due to a little more weight.......but it sure flys and sounds great ;)
