Oh, and another couple of little things that I forgot: these multicylinder engines have a lot of metal to warm up when compared to a single cylinder engine with the same displacement. And they also have much more cooling fin area to dissipate heat. So don't be surprised if the engine takes a while to fully warm up.

For the first runs I'd avoid using exhaust collector rings and instead I'd run the engine on a test stand with the 7 independent exhaust pipes. This way it's much easier to see if a cylinder is not firing: you only need to place your hand an inch or so behind the outlet of each exhaust stack and feel whether the pulses coming out of the stack are crisp, "hard" and hot exhaust pulses (indicating that the cylinder is firing) or much weaker lukewarm "puffs" (indicating that the cylinder is not firing). You can always fit a collector ring at a later time if you want to, when you are sure that you do not have problems with dropping cylinders.

Thanks, I wasn't planning on using the collector ring at first for the very reason you mention.

Hey guys,
I am selling my beloved Aero A-102, complete with Seidel ST 770 radial engine. Send me a PM if you're interested.

Here's a video:

And here's the full flying Video. Don't judge me for my landing! I have done waaaay betta!

Cheers, Martin

UMS Radials

8 Attachment(s)
A buddy of mine just attended an RC trade show in Germany. UMS has parted ways with Horizon, has redesigned the "Evolution" radials (NO longer called Evolution) and is offering all the engines as GAS now. Not sure if they will continue with the glow versions of the 7-35, 77, and 9-99. He was also told UMS will be coming out with a 250cc 5 cylinder to compete directly with the Moki 250 AND Koln clones!!

Thanks!

You're very kind. I'm sooo embarrassed with my landing... BTW - I fly in Australia as well - not the gas powered ones, though... have a place in Sydney...
Cheers, Martin

I assume you mean the FR7-420 Sirius7, as the old Sirius 300 has long been discontinued.
It must have been a very brief price dip, as I have written a small program that checks for the price of that engine (and the FF-320) on Tower Hobbies every 6 hours to alert me via email of any price drop, and it noticed nothing unusual around november 9th. Price stayed at $3499.99 all the time.

Or it could be that there is a bug in my program, even though it clearly kept on logging $3499.99 the whole time :)

Tower does show they still have the FR5-300 in stock for $2499
https://www.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXBY70&P=SM

I haven't seen a price drop on the FR7-420 yet either.

Jennifer Curtis 11-16-2017 07:33 AM

No, it was definitely the Sirius 300 radial.
It was still on sale yesterday, but today it
is gone from the clearance list. Apparently
it got sold.

It's still there, at least as far as the "In Stock" tag on the page the link references. When it comes to a five-cylinder glow radial, I usually go with the Saito ...

What the...

I have checked the "OS 4 stroke glow engines 1.2 cu. in. and up" page many many times, and the only radial there was the FR7-420. I haven't seen the FR5-300 in that page in the last 10 years
OS doesn't list it in its page either: O.S. Engines Home Page . Actually it's among the discontinued engines: O.S. Engines Parts Listings for Discontinued Engines

Well, I already have one of those, so I'm all set. I need the bigger one :D
Still waiting for a FR7-420 price drop (there was one drop last spring if I remember correctly, and it was that price drop that prompted me to write the little program I mentioned earlier).

Jennifer Curtis 11-16-2017 11:21 AM

So it looks like the price of the Sirius 300
dropped from 2600 to 2500 now.

Jenny

tdevince 11-16-2017 11:34 AM

Unfortunately I don't have a home for the FR5-300 so I don't need it. But I do have a potential home for the FR7-420. Just waiting :)

Jennifer Curtis 12-08-2017 09:23 AM

Well the FR5-300 Sirius radial is back on clearance again,
this time for $2320.

That's a LOT of money for a 300 sized engine. You could buy a Saito FG60 for half the price.
Or if you prefer a UMS 777 radial..

outacontrol41 12-08-2017 07:56 PM

I had the FR5-300 Sirius radial engine for a while. Gave me nothing but trouble. Most of the time only ran on 3 cylinders. I sold it and never looked back.

redball8 12-08-2017 08:51 PM

I think the Saito has some advantages over the OS in the five-cylinder radial - that diffuser ensures a good charge to each cylinder. OS definitely has the better carb, though.

tdevince 01-06-2018 06:03 PM

Tower has that FRS-300 at $2065. Wish I had a plane to put one in.

Hello bob a few years back i ran a 777 in on the bench for a flying friend. In the first hour the only way i could keep the bottom three to four cylinders running was to add 10% petrol to the glow fuel mix.

This is a question for those experienced avid Morton M-5 owners, especially those who were able to fire them up to run. Original Mortons made by Glen Morton had poor compression. Mine is an original Morton before Burgess took it over. Then Satra modified it and called it a Super Morton and I think they statred and fired up pretty reliably. Mine wont, I have poor compression, good spark (Ithink) being about 1/8- 3/16 arc at the plug wire. About 3/16 to 1/4 inch at the coil lead. Regular gasoline like they recommend. wont fire up. Is the spark enough? Compression may be the cause as it wont even fire intermittently, just nothing, nothing and more nothing. Any ideas?...Thanks.. Joe

I just use onboard glow to keep my Seidel / Evolution radials running while breaking them in. They do take a while for that, up to three hours or so. They typically can run without the onboard glow after about an hour. Lots of short (5-10 min) ground runs, interspersed with cool-downs!

First off....I know NOTHING about a Morton.

To check if its compression....inject enough oil into each cylinder to drip down around the pistonskirt/ring to allow the piston to seal. Treat each cylinder then give it a feel for increased compression and a try at starting. Also since its gas it will wash the oil off quickly.

If it works....consider running oil/more oil in the gas.

redball8 01-07-2018 09:23 AM

I've heard Mortons are pretty delicate, and these days I'd hesitate to run one. Too historical & rare...

Rudolph Hart 01-09-2018 02:08 AM

Well they say that about retro motorcycles from the sixties and seventies but lots of people do them up and ride them now.It still does'nt make them a better ride compared to what we have today but sentimental can be mental on the wallet sometimes.Whatever floats your boat is good.

redball8 01-09-2018 06:10 AM

I like that - "sentimental can be mental on the wallet."
