Here is a little 'artistic' FS400 porn for everyone. :D

Click on the link and it will take you to the full size image. It can be printed up to 30x40 inches if you so desire. :)

Hey frets24, I haven't been able to find that 80'' Zero build forum. Please give me the link if you can. I can tell you that the engine is a very tight fit in the cowl though. I just may have to cut some holes to clear the valve covers.

Maybe you and [email protected] can wake this thread up again;)

Yep, this one has five jugs. :)

5 jugs indeed, and to keep them warm a new glow driver is on its way to me. £65 seems a good price for a 5 pot glow driver and 6600mah battery. I was impressed

New designation for the FS400AR engine:

S564

:D

I see the popular Evolution/UMS/Seidel engines use a numbering system that combines the brand name's first letter, and the cylinder count with the cubic centimeter displacement. We can do it too! :)

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

hmmm... i like "the fourhundred" better somehow. S564 sounds like some hitec servo [&:]:)

thanks tom, the sound is brilliant and pulls a crowd every time. so much fun from such a small chinese engine :D

Well i should have my glow driver in just over a week apparently as they have to make it. After that i can fit it to the model and get myself in the air as well. Its a shame you are so far away Rev as i would come fly with you. A pair of 400's up together in 1930's style models :D sounds good to me!

Regarding names i like the saito method and that makes ita 400-R5. If we went with the system used by the americans in WW2 it ends up as R4...kinda lame, as its a model engine we should move the decimal point and call it an R400?

Nice video Rev.

What fuel type, nitro and oil % do you use ?

Yes, really is a pity. I think that would sound fabulous. I am actually one of the last glow guys at our club and, i think, the only four stroke enthusiast. they are all going electric or gas... would be great to have another four stroker :(

thanks,

I have learned that this radial needs nitro. I am using austrian fuel called "Rapicon" with 10% nitro and 18% synthetic oil.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

Thanks.

I was also going to try rapican next time.
I was thinking of trying the heli mix of 20% nitro, and 20% oil
It cost only 1,5 euro more than the 10% 18% plane fuel.

Then try running 5w40 engine oil enclosed in the engine case to keep the nitro from eating the engine up from the inside ;)

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

OK, I was just kidding. :)

Deciphering the FS400AR, I can figure out everything except the "A".

FS = Four Stroke

400 = 4.00 cubic inch

AR = "?" Radial

What do you suppose the "A" stands for?

retransit 10-07-2012 08:29 AM

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

"A" as in model series, followed by "B", "C", "D", etc. in subsequent versions?

Bob

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

A is for Aircraft?

Also SJN be careful with heli fuel as alot of them use low viscosity oil that can break down at the high temps found in a 4 stroke. We have has one instance where a Laser 240v was badly damaged by this exact problem. The engine badly overheated having been run a bit lean and with not perfect cowling baffles and the oil just burned away.I have run engines so hot they smoked on other occasions using ML70 oil and had no problems, Klotz super techniplate is also good. but just be careful with the low visc oils if you use them.

Rev, i think you need a new club :P alot of guys at my club are electric or gas and my Laser 300v powered La7 has them all a twitter. One guy who only flew electric now only flys glow and 90% of his glow time is now 4 stroke. He cant get enough of his little tiger moth with an enya 53 in the nose. Also a young lad (only 13) that i taught to fly has seen the various models and he wants an SE5a, a Hawker Hurricane and a Douglas DC3 as he just wants something real and none of this 3D crap! hes a good pilot as well, his hobby king SE5a is comming together so he should be up with my old os52fs before long! Anyway, im working to convert as many people as i can! But if you ever happen to be in england, with a model or not, drop me a line and you are more than welcome to come up and fly

Hey Folks - I just received my FS400AR yesterday and I am really impressed. It came in wooden box with lots of care in packing and shipping. The engine itself is also impressive. This is my second radial, the other is the 777. While there may be differences in opinion about the quality between the two, right now I'd say they both present themselves very well. This one is going into the TF GS Corsair ARF. It fits well into the cowl but I may have to do some modifying to get the proper airflow for cooling. The 777 is in a Waco YKS-6 1/4 Scale ARF ready to fly but yet to be flown.
I really appreciate all the good info on this thread.

Hi Galen, your Waco is gorgeous! Congratulations on your new FS400AR, we all know you will love it too. :)

Jon, spot on. "A" is for aircraft, what else? :D

Now, I have a question for all of you Microsens owners out there:

How do you know if the glow driver is working properly? Is there an indication, such as the LED not working? If the LED "IS" working, can there still be a problem with the glow plugs getting current?

I tried starting my engine today and did not succeed. Best I could get was a few rumbles out of it for a couple seconds before quitting. I am suspecting two possiblities, glow plugs not getting hot enough to light the engine off; or, a problem with my fuel delivery system. I have had problems with this particular tank/lines before.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

More questions:

The fuel tubing I have is "Medium" size. Is that big enough for max power? ? Should I use the "Large" size tubing?

What size do you guys use in your flying models?

Carosel43 10-07-2012 02:34 PM

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

My glow driver fail was shown by the indication LEDs showing low voltage. but as the whole system was rubbish i have decided to replace it all. As for the fuel tube dia i am using standard tubing with (i think) 1/8th dia bore with no problems at all. I have also found in the past that the plugs in the lower 2 cylinders can get very oily and so not fire up, not unlike a real radial!

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

I'm using large tubing. 1/8" inside diameter.

Standard or medium fuel tubing is 3/32" I.D.

RE: ASP/MAGNUM FS400AR Rebuild/Overhaul

I was just looking at the video I took when trying to start my engine. I put a pressure bulb on the vent line and gave it a good squeeze to get fuel to the carb. Typically, this will cause a lot of fuel to run out the carb onto the ground. In the video, it shows only a couple of drops. I think I have to pull my engine off of the stand and remove the carb and disassemble it to check that it does not have any debris in it restricting the fuel flow. I'm also going to use a new tank, with new large size lines.

Not sure yet about my glow driver, as the LED seemed to be working like normal.

Thanks for the feedback. :)

Kmot - Thanks for the compliment on the Waco, I hope to get it in the air this week.
Sorry you're having trouble with the 400.
Anyways best of luck I'm sure you'll get her running.
