saito fa-50 parts

I have a saito fa-50 thats about 15 years old, if not older. the thing is after only a few flights, like 15, it was in a four star that was in a mid air, and broke some stuff. the engine took a hit to the valve cover, cam cover, pushrods and tubes. now im not sure if i can get parts any more. some places tell me i cant, and i cant find some of the parts on horizons website. i'd love to stick this engine in a cub, or the GP rv-4 thats almost done. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Mike, w8ye can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe most of the stuff for .56 should fit your engine.

You can still get most parts for a 50 from Horizon Hobby. Most of the parts except for the piston/cylinder/wristpin are common with the 56 and these parts are still available.

It is difficult to negotiate their site when hunting 50 parts so you may want to post on here what you need and we'll see what we can come up with?

A couple weeks ago a gentleman had a need for something for a 50 and the "Lady" on the phone told him the engine was discontinued. We found the part in short order.

When looking for parts, the Saito 50 parts begin with a part number like "SAI50 . . ." Also they are referred to as "E"&"F" engines but we can reference direct links to the proper parts for you.

RE: saito fa-50 parts

Hey,

So I was given a plane from a friend that has been sitting for like 10 years has the Saito FA-50 I have pulled the engine because i couldnt even get it to turn over by hand. Since then I have cracked her open and separated the parts in bags. Most of the parts look great but the carb and inside the crank case are nasty!! Not much oil left just the sticky brown residue left by it. I need the entire engine rebuild kit im guessing? Looks like I am also going to have to soak this in some carb cleaner?
is this what I would use? and for how long? looks like I need a new carrier bearing for the crankshaft? What would be suggested to also replace in this? I have looked up new FA_50 but the cheapest I have seen are like $110.

Recap.

-Carb fluid to soak?

-how long?

-Where to get the entire over haul kit?

-Is that a Carrier Bearing?

-Any suggestions on what else to replace

-What parts for the carb do I need?

- Any Precautions I should be looking out for when rebuilding this? Or once its finished whats needed to be done before the first attempt in 10+ years on the motor?

Thanks SOOOOO Much for any help

Jon

:D

Carb cleaner is a petrolium product and really does not work well at all on glow engines. The best way to clean parts is with a small crock pot and a 50/50 mixture of ethylene glycol antifreeze. Let the stuff simmer overnight and use a old toothbrush to brush away the gunk. Parts come out looking like new in most cases.

Crankshaft bearings are available and inexpensive.

There really is no overhaul kit available, you will have to buy the spare parts needed and go from there.

I don't know if you are into *bay, but there is a seller who puts together "overhaul kits" for a reasonable price. I have seen him list kits for about every common glow engine out there. If you contact him, he mght have what you need.

This is one of his listings:

RE: saito fa-50 parts

if the antifreeze dosent work (green), try finding a product called MEK(Methyl-Eythel-Keytone, i think). When I was a mechanic, we used to use it to free up injectors that were stuck in diesel heads after having an injector leak. I can remember when I had one that had been leaking for something like 350,000 miles, and they were frozen, like realy frozen. we tried everything, even the anti-freeze trick, albeit we only had a block hrater to use. So i had the porter go down to the place we got our chemicals from and pick up a barrel. I soaked the head, and w/in 2 hours it was almost like new clean. after about 5 minutes with a wire brush, it was like new, and the injectors wee freed (they fell out because it ate the seals). it may be hard to get depending on what state you live in. and use care with it, it is VERY toxic.

RE: saito fa-50 parts

I think MEK was banned about 20 years ago?

It's not banned, but it is very toxic and best left alone if yuo don't know how to properly handle it. It is absorbed though skin easily on contact.
