Thunder Tiger 130 Four Stroke
 

I was at Toledo today and saw a Thunder Tiger 130 four stroke That was made up a lot like the 75 four stroke. The 54 and 91 had the black heads and fancy mufflers to make them match the 75 and 130.

I saw an announcement for these somewhere and have been waiting to find more info.

www.thundertiger.com has the basic specs but i'd love to see the recommended prop sizes and some performance stats.

Well, Tim Johnson posted over at RC Groups on April 30th that the F130-s, a.k.a. TTR9813, will be available at the "end of May."

In all fairness to Tim Johnson, he didn't specify which May he meant (2009, 2010, 2011, etc.), but here's to hoping he meant May of 2009.

"Street Price should be around $266.95. This price will vary depending on your local hobby shop."

It's going to weigh in about 4.5 ounces heavier than the Saito 1.25, but it's still pretty light at an all-up weight of 29.01 ounces w/ muffler. The Magnum XL 1.20 RFS weighs in at 31.08 ounces and the O.S. FS-120S-E Surpass is 33.3 ounces w/ muffler.

The Thunder Tiger F-130s looks like it's shaping up to be a winner...

I should get my order of 2 of these engines in by next week. Wonder if it uses the oil recirc system like the OS alpha series.That would be a nice touch.

Here's some pics of the 130s.Haven't had the time to run them as yet but they do look awfully nice. Craftsmanship seems to be excellent. Specs stated are:- displacement- 21.28cc (20.52 cc for the saito 125) , bore x stroke - 33.6 x 24 , weight with muffler is 29.01 oz which is close to what I weighed (26.9 + 2.3+ 29.2oz) Pic 3 is the saito125 weight without muffler.Add 2.9oz to that adn that makes the 130s 4.2oz heavier.

Well , found the time to run the engine.I had initial worries as the compression was very low out of the box. It took a while to get the engine started for the first time as a result.But the compression improved tremendously after half a tank and starts became very easy, mostly one flip starts. The exhaust note is sharp and you can hear the  very distinctive putt putt of a 4stroke. Very different from a saito or OS .
On an apc16x6 I recorded 8800 rpm on 20%nitro on the first tank of fuel. Idling was reliable down to 2000rpm this also on the first tank.I expect these figures to improve as the engine runs in. Fuel consumption from what i can ascertain seems to be good, it consumes slightly less than the saito. Vibration levels are on par with OS..
Overall, a very good engine and good value for the money.For the price i paid, I got 2 of these engines for the price of one 125 with change back! I think suddenly japanese engines are looking very expensive.

I purchased one about 2 weeks ago. I mounted it on a Sig 4 star 120. It started up right away with the high speed needle valve open about 3 turns. I am breaking it in on a APC 14X10 prop. per recomendations of the manual. I ran it for about 5 minutes at about 4 to 5 thousand RPM's. I let the engine cool and did this for about 3 or 4 times. Yesterday I took it out and flew my Four Star 120. I had to add some nose weight like 5 ounces due to the engine being lighter than my OS120 111 four stroke. I left the mixture rich with the same prop and put three flights of about 7-8 minutes each. I am running Omega 15% fuel.
I am happy with the performance of the engine, it flew my 4 star with authority.
Next week I will be trying a APC 16X8 or a 16X6 prop and start to lean the engine, I will then tach the prop and see what RPM's I am getting.
It is a great looking engine, that performs as well as it looks. I think it is a great buy.

The latest issue of MAN (Sept 2009) has an advertisement from http://www.thundertiger4u.com/ listing this engine for $269.99. That's a very good price for a four stroke engine of this size, so I ordered one. I have had excellent results with Thunder Tiger two stroke engines and hopefully this one will be just as good. Does anyone else have any recent experience with this engine? I'll report mine as soon as it arrives and I find something interesting to mount it in.

I have put approximately 90 minutes flying time on my TT 130 4 stroke. I started off with a APC 14X10 prop. I am now running a 16X6 prop. I am still running it rich it is starting to break in nicely. My TT91 4 stroke took about 2 gallons of fuel before it was running strong. I believe this will get stronger as I put more time in on it. So far I am pleased with the performance. I would recommend the engine if you are looking for a reasonably priced 120 4 stroke.

Make sure you check the camshaft and push rods for lubrication.

There's a few reports of the smaller .75 version of this motor having lubrication problems.

How fast can it turn an APC 16x6, now that it's broken in?

The .91 is like that, obvious it has a high performance cam. Probably why it doesn't like large props. Lumpy idle, but still idles low and no hesitation.

I don't know about O.S or Saito mufflers, but Thunder tigers have a cone or something inside, they are very quiet indeed.

The muffler for the TT130s has no cone nor baffles inside.Its just a plain single chamber. Took out the 125 from my sport senior and plonked in the 130s. The mounting holes are the same except you need to widen the mounting beams a bit as it is a wider engine.The straight out threaded header is a little short for my application.

Ok, thats indeed good info

My muffler in the TT F-75s uses some kind of muffling...I can't see light through it, and if I insert something through the exhaust, it stops somewhere, that's why I said it, so I've guessed that it would be the same on the big brother....

I had an OS and it was probably a bit quiter than the TT, but that has nothing to do with the lumpy idle.

If my memory serves me right, the 130s is turning 100~200 more than the 125 that I have.The 125 has never been a powerhouse unless fed with 30% nitro.I'll have to do a proper test to confirm.

There is an extended exhaust manifold available as optional part PN0323 (See attached Pic)


Can anyone give me some tach figures yet?

I'm thinking of putting one in my Venus II.
