New Candy
My father and I just finished a Candy, built from plans. Dad built the wings, I built the tail, and we both worked on the fuselage. I covered it in Monokote using white, metallic wine, and black trim. Weight is 6-1/4 lbs, power is an OS .46FX. There are some things we tried to keep authentic like rubber-banding the wing, but it's stuffed with modern 2.4 radio gear.
We test flew it yesterday and it went great! It's a smooth, easy flying sport ship. Lands nice and the .46 was plenty of power. Flies a lot like my Venture 60.
The Candy was a cutting-edge pattern ship when Cliff Weirick designed it in 1963. He went on to win the Nationals in 1965, placed third in the world championships. The construction article appeared in the November, 1963 issue of RC Modeler. The plans are still available here:

Dad was particularly nostalgic for this plane because he built one back in the 60s. It was just beyond his flying abilities at the time and it didn't last too long, but he always loved the design. He was pretty happy to see one flying again!

RE: New Candy
Hi Bruce,
I too have gone back to my roots. I have a Senior Falcon built from a replica kit powered by a K&B 61 pumper. I am working on a Top Flite Taurus. I have a K&B 45 to power it with. Thanks to your post, I have just ordered the Candy plan to add to my collection. I intend to go through my RCM collection and see what else I can build. I also have a rudder only model which was my first RC model back in 1963. I fly it regularly. It amazes the kids at the field.
After building and flying Jets, these old models are so simple and cheap to build and own. To tell the truth I am getting a bit bored with the jets. I have the old Reaction and Turboprop up for sale. Perhaps I will get back into jets in the future.
Regards

Beautiful aircraft Bruce. One of these days...
BTW, my records show that Cliff won the Nats in both 1964 and 1965 with the Candy. I don't know if it was the same aircraft, but he used a ST60 and Bonner radio both years.
Cliff Weirick designed it in 1963. He went on to win the Nationals in 1965

RE: New Candy
Thanks everybody for all the nice compliments!
High Plains, you are most likely right about Cliff winning the Nats in '64 and '65. My info comes from Cliff's bio on the AMA website:
https://www.modelaircraft.org/files/WeirickCliff.pdf
It does say he won in '64 and '65, but was a little vague about the actual airplane he was flying. There's one pic that specifically says he was flying the Candy in '65. Don't know what else he would have been flying in '64...
Thought it was also interesting that the bio says the Candy was basically a low-wing Stormer.
Tommy, great minds think alike I'm not tired of the jets, but it was kinda refreshing to work on a purely "fun" project. Be sure to post pics of your Taurus when it's done. The Candy and Taurus were contemporaries, but the Taurus was better known. probably because it was kitted by a major manufacturer back in the day.

RE: New Candy
There's a little bit more to the story. While we were building our Candy, a flying buddy stopped by the shop and thought it was pretty neat. We loaned him the plans and three weeks later his was flying. We hadn't even started covering yet! Anyway, they both turned out very nice and we had them at our little VRCS gathering last weekend. The next day we all headed out on a flying trip to the desert. Ended up at a small dry lake in Bordertown, NV, just outside Reno. In the group pic, I'm in the center, flying buddy John G. is on the left, and Bruce Sr. is on the right. The Candy is turning out to be a real nice sport flyer!
