Help Identify this plane please
Hi Guys,
I received some old pictutres from my dad and he built this plane back in 1971 when I was 3yrs old. I remember this plane well. After several repair jobs he handed the plane down to me and to say the least it didn't survive long in the hands of a 3 yr old. I would like to build this plane to hang in my shop. All I know it that it is a Cub and was a single channel. I believe it was powered with an .049/.061
I would love to find a kit and build this plane, this is the plane that started my love for airplanes way back when.

Dan,
You are correct about the Sterling Cub. I blew up the pic on my PC and the "N" number on the decal on the tail matches what was supplied with the Sterling kit. I found one but it has sold. I will also need to find some vintage wheels like were on my dad's.
Thanks for the help!!

Thanks Dan,
I checked them out and you are correct those are the wheels that were used on my dads Cub. I will keep an eye on the auctions and buy a Cub when I find one. My Dad just turned 70 a couple weeks ago. I am sure he would like seeing me build this old Cub.
Thanks for the help guys!!!

RE: Help Identify this plane please
Hi Anthony,
Greetings from the ever warn but quite windy of late "Valley of the Sun'.
I too agree that the J3 Cub could be the popular Sterling kit, and I just happen to have 2 of them, well, probably 1 1/2 kits, that I have been considering selling of late. The 1/2kit or so is the older kitbox design, that is lite corn-flakes box type cardboard with a large, faded red/orange lable with a photo of the J3, and specs, has plans, lots of bits and pieces of wood; the other kit is of newer design/production run, having a sturdy corrigated cardboard kit box without the red/orange lable, kit is complete with plans, and many of the parts have been punched out of the die-cut sheets. I was thinking of building this one myself, but medical problems of late have kept me grounded and out of the shop. If you are interested, drop me an email, &: I'll give you a good deal on these 2/& or 1 1/2 kits.
Will close for now, best regards from Glendale, Arizona,
Joe Nagy.

You have to love this site,
Thanks to Joe I now have 2 of these wonderful kits on their way to me. I will be sure to post some pics of the builds when the time comes. One will be for display and the other will be a flyer.
Thanks Again to everyone who responded and helped me with info on the Cub.

Hi John,
I called and talked to my dad last night about the Cub the best he remembers he covered the Cub in orange Monokote and the engine was around a .15 I cannot tell much about the engine from the pics. Some guys are really good about spotting what engines are with little showing.
He was tickled to hear I was going to build this Cub.

RE: Help Identify this plane please
I received my kits today
One is a complete pristine kit and the other has alot of parts missing. I will use the complete kit parts for templates to build the 2nd kit. One of the kits has a vaccuume formed nose bowl and the other has an aluminum nose bowl.
It will probably be a few weeks before I get started building.

RE: Help Identify this plane please
Anthony, You might want to check with Fiberglass Specialties. I needed a replacement cowl for my Chuck Hollinger PT 19, and they had a few. I bought them all. They may have one for the Cub.

Thanks Bill,
I may check that out. The cowl is built up except the nose bowl. I may use the plastic on on the display model and the aluminum one for the flying model.
It's funny how the kit says a pre-fabricated kit designed especially for radio control. The kit doesn't look too tough but it is definetly old school. It shows mods for free-flight and control line. The plans are very brittle and are starting to come apart at the folds. I am going to tape the back side and run a few copies of the plans. I need to get some help with a good electrical setup for this plane. The electric stuff is totally Greek to me.
Now to get a couple sets of Trexler wheels ordered
