Default how to patch hole in old fabric plane?

My friend acquired an old Fairchild 22 painted fabric covered plane and he's going to repaint it but he has a small hole in the fabric he needs to patch. It's a little larger than a pencil eraser so how's the best way to do that if he doesn't know what covering is on it. I assume its silk and dope as it's very old. Thanks for any suggestions.

cut a piece of solartex with pinking shears to cover the hole........iron it on and paint to match the plane

makes an authentic looking repair just like on the full size older planes

I wouldn't use an iron on material at all.

I'd use silk and cut a circle.

Dope b dope and b done with it!

Remember, if you use dope, that Butyrate dope will go over Nitrate dope, but not vice versa. and, If the dope was Aerogloss, all bets are off. Good luck.

I agree that a silk patch doped on would be the best solution. Problem is that it'll always show as a patch. As far as dope compatability goes I'm sure you can find an area (the bottom of the wing center section?) that you can test. Mitch

FAA approved patches are sold to repair FS holes. Are there any FS fabric covered oldies that don't have patched holes? Go the Aircraft Spruce or Randolph's to see patches available and try to scale the size if you want scale effects.

Gary Sibert, at Pink-it http://www.pink-it.net/new_pink-it_2010_005.htm has exactly what you require. Click on the products link. You'll see his Silver Dollar Patches.

Give him a call. He's a great guy to deal with.

Jim.

Maybe you can use this, also for repair on the flight line.

There is one glue to repair also big holes in silk and dope covering, even if you drop a screwdriver through the wing.
Point is all the material (silk ) has still to be there.

Bring the surfaces of silk together the best you can, maybe use tweezers and try to get them on same level, after that do the glue over the seam.
When the glue dries the tension will be back. Only brand to use for this method is UHU Hart a German product but maybe there is a comparable product in the USA.
