one bad Gee Bee!
My buddy called me up today to see if I wanted to sell a plane for him. I said ok without even knowing what he was selling. He told me it was a long bodied Gee Bee and I figured it was a Pacific aeromodels arf. I told him I would stop by to look at it and to my suprise this was sitting there. Wow! I dont know who makes it but its either a kit or scratch built. Somebody put alot of time in detail on this. It has a 90" wingspan. Anybody have an idea what kit or plans this is? I seen a pic from the WRAM show and a guy came in 3rd with one similar. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I dont have a pic of it yet...actually the pics I took arent very good but I didnt have time to mock it up. It does have the big ring cowl and not the blister cowl. From what I have read it might be a Henry Haffke 1/4 scale y model but not for sure.

Ikon N'West had a kit of the 'Y' pretty much that size. I built one about 20 years ago. The fuselage bulkheads will have I.D. numbers rubber stamped on them. The glass parts were blue polyester resin. The bracing wires were affixed with strap metal fittings soldered to the L.G. Nice looking airplane.

Hey ARUP my friend. I looked at the Ikon n'west but it has the blister cowl but it is 90" wingspan. Does it have fiberglass wheelpants? This one has carved wood wheelpants. Here is a pic of the Henry Haffke 1/4 scale. This one has the same type cowl so im leaning towards this one.

-I can tell you it's not a GB R1, R2, or the R1,R2 hybrid No 7 (later called the hybrid 7-11). The hybrid did have the #7 with the "filaloola" bird insignia on it and the fuselage was lengthened 2 ft, but the cockpit was located between the trailing edge of the wing and the vertical fin. My source is "Racing Planes and air races", volume III, 1932-1939.
-Of course without the cowl it's hard to tell, could it be the "D" model? Sorry, no clue which kit or plans.

You are looking at a very well built Henry Haffke 1/4 scale GeeBee "Y".
The one you saw at the WRAM show was built by Henry Haffke, I currently have this plane under construction and will start back on it when my shoulder heals from surgery.
Henry powered his with a .91 2 stroke. Mine will be powered by a DLE-20 gasser.
Later!

Yes- the Ikon kit had a blister cowl and glass wheel pants. The Ikon kit didn't have provisions for cockpit cover to be functional- you would have to make the modification. Look up inside the fuse and see if construction is like the pic Anthony (WacoNut) posted. That is a Haffke 'trademark'. The Ikon kit uses 3/8" sticks for longerons and crossmembers and 3/8" ply for more foward components like wing saddle and firewall. The 'D' model had an inline 4cyl Menasco. The 'Y' was a two-holer for which one hole covered and windscreen removed for racing. Cheers! P.S. I have an Ikon 'E' model kit. It has a ring cowl like yours for the Warner radial. It uses similar construction as their 'Y'.

My firewall is modified, it is recessed back to accept the gas engine. Are the marks on your parts stamped? The front former on mine is F2. I cut my kit from plans purchased directly from Henry Haffke. I would like to see some pics of the wing saddle if you can get some pics of that area.

Hey Waconut thanks for clearing that up about the cutout on the firewall. I went thru it better today and it is built like the one you have pictured so I think I got the right plan designer. I will get some pics for you this weekend. Now I have to plan on what engine and stuff to put on this. Its a sweet plane but whoever built it set it up for a static model so I have to do some figuring on how to set up the linkages and everything. Is a Saito 180 too much engine for this plane?
Thanks everybody for the help. It is much appreciated.

RE: one bad Gee Bee!
I would like the 180 should work. The plane is supposed to weigh around 14lbs when complete. Do a weight and balance check and see what you think a 180 would do for the plane. Also Henry powered his with an old Webra .91 and stated the plane was a little under powered. Henry is a very nice guy and loves to talk anything GeeBee. I also purchased his GeeBee book from him at the same time I ordered the plans and he was nice enough to sign the book for me.
The way the fuse is constructed you shouldn't have too much of an issue running linkages to the tail surfaces, The throttle may be a bit of a pain. I have my firewall drilled for the DLE-20 engine ready to install as soon as my shoulder gets back in order.
I can take pics of specific areas of the plans if that will aid you in getting your linkages ran.

WacoNut- you are right about Henry Haffke! He is a really nice fellow. I've had correspondence with him in the past. I had some questions about converting his 'D' model plan to the 'X' model. It flew very well. Henry had some nice plans out for GeeBees when nothing else was available! (sorry to get off topic- my apologies)

Robert,
I believe I have Henry's mailing address and his phone number. I will do some digging and see what I can come up with, Henry sells the plans directly and does not work over the internet. I also highly recommend his book on GeeBee's.

Thank's Anthony. Will give him a call shortly. Almost done with cub and need the next project. The Gee Bee look's like a lot of fun.
Could have bought one framed up a while back, but would rather build it myself.

I have always liked the Model "Y" better than the R1/R2 racers and you do not see many "Y" planes modeled. The ARF's are all wrong as usual. The cowling and windscreen for a couple.
Henry is getting up in his years, when I talked to him he was restoring his Model "Y" to donate it to the AMA Museum.
