Man, she flys great! A few clicks of up elevator and that was it!
Very stable!
Landing was on the nose due to wheels hitting the front of the pant openings. I opened those up with the Dremel and she goes back up this coming Sunday!
She's a keeper for sure! Can't wait to wring her out

I am in the process of building a Phoenix Ryan STA 72" wing span airplane. My Ryan will be powered by an Evolution 20 CC gas engine. I will post pictures in the near future.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

I flew the maiden on mine the other day, a real keeper! Needed some down elevator trim and a couple clicks of aileron. I powered mine with a Saito 100. If the expiration date comes up, another one will be ordered. definitely needs down elevator on grass to keep from nosing over, no sharp turns on the ground! I did increase the control surface throws a little, especially the elevator.

My Phoenix Ryan STA is almost ready for its maiden flights now. Phoenix Ryan STA, Evolution 20 CC Gas engine, J-Tec muffler, 16 oz tank, 15x8 prop, weighs in at 9-1/2 lbs full of fuel.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

She's lookin mighty fine!
Just a tip... never let your cut-outs on your spinner touch the prop anywhere! She will eventually throw a blade! Been there... done it!
Good Luck!

I had my maiden flights with my new Phoenix Ryan STA plane yesterday. The plane is powered by an Evolution 20 CC gas engine. The plane and engine performed very well. The first flight only required a little down trim. This plane is very stable and flies quite well, landings are easy and predictable. I am pleased with this plane and engine combo. Excellent vertical with stable flight.

Best wishes and good safe flying.

I have discovered be disabling Flash Player in my browser it keeps some of this site's ads from running and causing latency.

Here are the final results pictures of my 1/5th scale Ryan instrument panels if anyone wants to see. Tell me what you think.

Congrats on the maiden! I'm on the verge of getting one of these birds myself. Which version of that Turnigy motor are you using, and what prop? Trying to get a sense of what works well. Also... any things to watch out for during the assembly?

Thanks!

Thanks!
Actually, after I crashed my FW 190D and all twelve cells fried.... I put a DLE 55cc gasser in the Ryan! I'll be finishing that this weekend hopefully
As for the assembly... no problems except the pants and spats are a royal pain! I saw no other way to get them on other than twist and fix

I would like to join the brotherhood too, please.
My wife bought me the Phoenix Models version as a birthday present (based on my recommendation of course and I just L-O-V-E it! It looks gorgeous in the air and flys like a trainer. Most of my club members consider it to be the prettiest airplane in our field - I agree. Whole heartedly
Mine is powered by a diesel converted OS 61FSR spinning a 14-6 prop and the performance is astonishing. I usually fly at 75% throttle. 100% is used only when I want to climb verically out of sight. The fuel tank is 8 OZ. and provides about 10 minutes of flight.
I fell so deeply in love with the STA that I bought plans off Fleabay for a 1/3 scale enlarged from Burnis Fields excellent 1/4 scale plans which were published in M.A.N in May 1986. At 1/3 scale the wingspan is 120" and I must say that the quality of the plans hugely superseded my expectations. The seller also offers a Laser Cut short kit which I am considering.

A short kit really does save you time and if he is any good you'll know the parts are right.

Let me add this, having a short lit custom laser cut from drawn plans can be very educational. A good cutter will cut the former drawings in half and flip them over to check for irregularities and there will be some. Next they ask you if you want them to cut inside the line, middle of the line, or the outer edge of the line. There are a lot of variables you would never think existed.

Good information Flyer, if I was using the services of a kit cutter, I would want them to leave the line so I could sand it to fit perfectly...

Thanks for the insight, I appreciate your thoughtfulness. I am not at all sure that I want to buy the laser cut parts because the plans were blown 133% from the original which obviously have scaled the cutouts for stringers, spars etc. by the same scale factor.
I want to first redesign those features into more reasonable sizes. For example: the fuselage was originally (at 1/4 scale) supposed to be sheeted with 1/4 inch balsa with 1/16 balsa on top for a total thickness of 5/16" skin. I have never seen it done this way before, and, I am not sure it is really needed. At 133% larger - that skin would now be .416" thick - almost 7/16"!
As hard as I tried, I could not find any reference to the designer Burnis Fields. There's no doubt that he is very talented in both drafting and building a gorgeous scale model but other than this one design of his - I know nothing about him.

The way sites like this work is you join and start to learn. As you progress in the hobby you pass along to others what you have learned here and by exprience. No one person can know everything and there is always more than one way to do anything and this place is a great way to learn more than one way!\
That said here is what I have found on Burnis Fields. He is one of those little remembered old timers in the hobby. There are a lot of designers who are little know and may have one, two, or a handful of designs floating out there. Some of the names that come to mind are Charles Richard, Clovin Miller, Dick Katz, and Jim Pepino. All were great designer and all are long since gone.

Here is a very short bio from the AMA on Burnis Fields.

His 96 inch Wingspan Cessna 140 design can be found free for download here:
